: Yet more Power Steering Problems...
SMART ASS 08-19-2002, 07:44 PM Ok, so we got the lines figured out, no line leaks...
Well while we were testing it, the power pump, was whining, i was thinking it was out of fluid, and / or has air in it...
We turned the wheels with the full weight of the truck and it steered like a caddlac.
We placed the axle up on jacks and tried air-raiding he system (tip from another p4x user) turned the wheels back and forth, when the ps box would reach its max pull and throw the pump would bogg the engine down ALOT. Filled it with a bit more fluid, then POP the front cap on the PS Gear IH Scout box blew. and spewed out fluid, what do you guys think?
I am sure the system had air in it because the fluid was getting foamy...
:(
what to do?
Rerard 08-19-2002, 08:03 PM One thing we are considering is popping the cap backon and then welding it.. but wanted to get some feedback from you guys first because if it blows up after welding we cant return it.
Is the box bad?
Is it possible to have too much fluid?
elf_cruiser 08-19-2002, 08:07 PM don't weld it, i tried that and it broke
the box is cast, and the cap is pot metal, it will not hold. It soundsl ike you need steering stops, or your current stops are adjusted wrong. When i popped the cap off, it was cause i had no stops. Good luck!

Well what did you do after it poped? get a new one?
moveaside 08-19-2002, 08:13 PM At times like this I wish I had a spare for you:(
Harvester of Sorrow 08-19-2002, 08:19 PM after it pops you clean up the spunk that spills on the floor with a sock!
Sorry man...time for a new one:rolleyes:
I know where you can get one for 2000.00, oh yeah and it comes with a free Scout II!
Keith 08-19-2002, 08:21 PM First of all, if you are bogging the motor when you have it on stands while bleeding, you are not doing it right. You are not supposed to bash it to the stops, causes cavitaion and more air. Like the others said, the stops if there are any, are adjusted too far in. I'll bet so far that the front joints will bind up. Look at the front of the box closely. When the cap comes out, the snap ring that holds it in usually cracks the cast of the box somewhere. Basically you turned it so far that the power piston moved far enough forward to contact the back side of the cap and pushed it out.
SMART ASS 08-19-2002, 08:32 PM Ok, got the box off, C RING looks good, no cracks in the cast visual, just blew the cap...
time for a new box or rebuild kit?
Rerard 08-19-2002, 08:35 PM It also sounds like there is a leak at the cap..
Keith 08-19-2002, 08:49 PM If you did not crack the box, you are in good shape. Really does not need to be rebuilt, AS LONG AS, the piston did not move so far foward that some of the recirculating balls did drop out. I think there is a nut on the end of the piston. If I remember right, you can pull it out and look at the balls and the worm gear of the input shaft. I would center the piston in the box, and pull the plug in it. Take a look, if no balls have come out, then just get another cap is it is damaged. Otherwise, just put the cap and the o-ring back in it.

We did, and still leaks bad....
where can we get a new cap?
elf_cruiser 08-19-2002, 09:26 PM mine is an AGR, so i sent it back to them, they refurbished it, and put on one of those new bling-bling billet aluminum caps. Of course, this wekend the input shaft seal blew. So, the pressure just found the next weak spot on the box, i guess.
SMART ASS 08-19-2002, 09:44 PM Well the pump is ok, just blew the cap, the outer part of the cap is purty fuked up, need a new cap, where to get one???
SMART ASS 08-19-2002, 09:50 PM Uh dude, the cap is aluminum cast
