: Getting followed by the police

I've had a stock 79 wagoneer for 4-5 years. I've never been pulled over, or even had a cop look twice at me in all that time.

Yesterday, I bought a 85 toyota with a couple inches of lift, and some 32" BFGs. Nothin' too fancy, but it is a bit higher that a lot of other vehicles on the road.

So far, I've have had 2 cops follow me a while, and then turn around. Which usually means they were checking me out. I wasn't speeding, or driving any differently than I do in the jeep.

Has anyone else noticed that lifted trucks attract more attention from the police?

What exactly are the CA lift laws. I know you can't have more than 2" of tread sticking past the fenders. What about lift and how much tire is exposed because about 3/4 or more of my tires are exposed from behind. I don't want to end up putting on <IMG SRC="smilies/rainbow.gif" border="0"> mudflaps if I do get a fixit ticket. I've been followed a couple times but never been stopped. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Chances are they were running the plates to see if the Toy was stolen...very common vehicle to get ripped.

Lift laws in Cali...I believe it is 54" to center of headlight and 24" to bottom of frame..I could be wrong on the frame hieght. And technically...You can't have any tire outside of the wheelwells...but most cops let you get away with 2"'s...If you try to cover the tires with fender flares or mud flaps they will leave you alone. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

i have followed a few that were really friggin high, and when i see lift blocks stacked up and u bolts tweaking... i stop them and give em hell because they are the ones that cause all these stoopid laws to be....... then i tell em to make it safe and its all good..

Cali mud flap law, atleast how CHP told me it was when they ticked me. Mud flaps must cover the whole tire , and the bottom has to be within a 5deg trjectory from where the rubber meets the road. A very selective law, they only bother lifted trucks with it, cause they have been modifying their trucks. As we were sitting there, I was pronting out every 'stock' car and or truck that didn't meet the law, and the officer didn't care!

In general I was getting bugged more with my lowered Nissan Mini than with my 4Runner. But if they need some extra tickets to meet their quota, watch out, they can pull over just about anybody for something

When I would tell my wife that that cops always fallow with me she said you must have been doing something wrong. Then one day she had to drive my truck to work because her car broke. On her way home she gets pulled over and the cop starts in on her about how high the truck is and how unsafe it is <IMG SRC="smilies/pissed.gif" border="0"> and then just let her go?
She said she felt harassed and now understands what profiling is <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

The cops around here seem to really pic on the lifted 4x's w/loud exhaust. I have a nice quiet single big block flowmaster and never have any probs. I did have a friend that got pulled for a barking the tires around a corner, when he explained how the Detroit works the cop let him go and told him the locker was cool.

I think for a 1/2 ton vehicle the frame at
it's lowest point between the axles can be no
more than 23" above the pavement.

I know it's a little off topic, but I have one of the best asshole cops stories ever...

So, I was taking my girfriend home at about 11:30 at night in my dad's '68 Mustang California Special. I see the cop come up behind me, (with no headlights on) looking to bug some kids in a muscle car on a friday night. I was super legal with everything (turn signals, speed limit, etc) but sure enough he lights me up. Before even telling my WHY he pulled me over, he's got the death-ray maglight all in my eyes and is playing 20 questions. Asks me my age (17 then), my girlfriend's age (16), where we're going...

"Have you been drinking tonight son?"
"No, officer"
"Not doin' any party'in??"
"Nope"
(pause, more bright lights in the eyes....)
"How much crank you do tonight son?"
(right about now I gave him the biggest blank stare, totally WTF????)
"NONE...."
"Don't lie to me son, you haven't been on anything!?"
"No"

He then proceeded to haul me out on the curb and take my pulse, all the while giving me the light in my eyes. After taking my pulse like 4 times, he tells me about how my eyes are all dilated (I just got out of a movie and it's the middle of the night, of course they're gonna be dilated!).

Finally, he tells me that he pulled my over because my sticker is expired (he even said he ran the reg. and it was current, but "ya gotta have the sticker on there")

I was about half an hour late getting my girlfriend home, that was fun explaining to her parents....

Asshole.......

Never gotten a ticket in my jeep though... <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce.gif" border="0">

If you ever want to really know what it's like get harrassed by the <IMG SRC="smilies/fj.gif" border="0"> s then drive a Baja bug for a while. Jeez, you can't drive across town with out getting pulled over and harassed. In my truck I got pulled over in a the friggin' Wally-world parking lot by some bitch cop for chirping my tires. I explained to her that I had a locker and there was nothing I could do to prevent a little chirping. She said she had never heard of anything like that. Well I guess if some trigger happy dyke with a huge ego has never heard of something it must not exist. <IMG SRC="smilies/flipoff.gif" border="0"> Grr, people keep telling me there are good <IMG SRC="smilies/fj.gif" border="0"> s out there but I'll be damned if I ever run into them when they're in uniform.

Around here (Atlanta). My truck is a rolling violation. I have big old up rights to protect my tail lights and at a 45 degree angle between spare tire and jerry can racks my tail lights are not visable...tag light non existant. My bumpers are custom and sit higher than the factory units. 4/5 inch lift. My fenders have the bottoms cut off so I have about 26inches of my tires visable from behind and about 28 in front. If you sight across the bottom of the fenders you can almost see the tops of the tires with the 32's on it (it's getting 36's soon) My tires are still under the fenders wit hthe 32's we will see with the 36's. Never been bothered. It does have quiet exhaust and it does have visable shoulder belts.
I agree. Toys get stolen a lot and My guess is some if not all is your tag getting run to check for stolen. That or there is some jerk with a simular truck in your area that's a known problem. Look at the vehicle also. The Wago is a family type vehicle. the Toy attracts you punks that get in trouble. If you haven't got anything to hide then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Well, first of all, I'm not some "young punk."

Secondly, it's not about having anything to hide.

I was just curious if getting followed would be the norm, while driving a lifted vehicle.

Way back when I was a teenager, I lived in Rocklin, Ca. I used to get pulled over all the time for not having illuminated licence plate lights. Of course, when I would get out to check, they would always be lit. The usual response from the officer would be "Oh, you must have a intermittent short in your wiring."

Funny, they never wrote me a fix it ticket. They were just looking for something they could to cite me for. It never happened though.
<IMG SRC="smilies/innocent.gif" border="0">

I'm not here to flame police. I was just curious to see if I would be harrased like I was a teenager.

If they're checking for stolen vehicles, that's understandable. But if they're looking for a "easy bust" well that's BS.

I'm don't wanna have to their play games.

I dunno about cali but here in texas I am the punk teenager in a lifted toyota and I never get followed by the cops. I have never in my life had problems with cops. If you are respectfull to them and don't put on any attitude they will treat you like a human being. Treat them like you are better then them, or that they are misstreating you by wasting a few precious moments of your time then they will be a-holes to you, and you probably deserve it.

I will have to say some cops are pretty cool. About 2 weeks ago I was pulling a car trailer for work and I had been driving for about 11 hours. I was coming back from a trip to Seattle and I was doing about 70mph. I jumped out in the number 1 lane on a 3 lane stretch of 99 through Modesto (a no, no with a trailer) to pass. Anyway, I get pulled over-cop ran my license and tags, checked insurance. He gave me a bunch of shit for speeding and being in the number 1 lane but let me off with a warning. That was my lucky day. Not all cops are assholes. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

I used to have a VW bug that was painted Magenta. I worked in LA as a travelling sales rep and got about 4 tickets a year. You could just see the cops starin' ya down. Finally got sick and tired of it and painted it metallic grey, as I wanted the most invisible color I could find. No mre tickets for the next 2 years.

Now that I live in a small town, I don't get pulled over anymore, especially since I have "made the acquaintence" of every cop in town. Of corse, and FJ-55 is a little hard to forget <IMG SRC="smilies/fj.gif" border="0"> . At any rate, in this town its the cars that are cruisin' after 11:30 PM that get pulled over during "drunk patrol". They just sit outside the bars and let 'em roll a few blocks. That's one of the things that got me into wheelin'. You can party your ass off in the woods and nobody cares. <IMG SRC="smilies/beer.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/smokin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/beer.gif" border="0">

I've been followed a few times in my tacoma when it was stock height. I've had no lights on my license plate for over a year. Doesn't seem to bother anyone. But it appears I will soon be asking for a fix it ticket. After my SAS my frame rails are ~25" off of the ground (t-case is ~23") with ~32" tires and I have no mud flaps. I'll only be running 35x12.5 tires though. Let the fun begin!

Is a 17 year old rich kid going to pick a nice lifted yota or a 4 door wagoneer if given the choice?
Is the cop going to have more of a stereo type for a lifted yota that he see's young kids in mostly or a waggo that usual has a family in it?
do I need to go on?
Nice attitude you got by the way. If you read my sig you might have noticed I'm also a Yota owner as well as a chevy owner. In fact I own a yota that REALLY attracts the young punks. Yes I have been pulled over on BS crap and once they see I'm a 34 year old I'm let go. I have been pulled 3 times in the last year. Last ticket I got was 10 years ago. You figure it out.

WOW, here we go again.

I hate COPS, all cops ar stupid, asshole <IMG SRC="smilies/fj.gif" border="0"> Bla Bla Bla. Whine whine whine. There are some asshole cops without a doubt, I dont like them anymore than you do, probably a hell of a lot less because they give guys like me a bad name.

The MAJORITY of Law Enforcment Officers are upstanding and good people. If you are not getting pulled over and just followed, who cares, if you get pulled over and nothing it wrong and or you get a warning for something that is who cares. If you get a Ticket for something that is illegal, or a violation and it is, tough shit, go whine to the law makers and have the law changed. We as LEO dont make the laws we enforce them. If you get pulled over and have an asshole attitude, expect to be treated like an asshole. You reap what you sew most of the time.

For all you that whine and complain about LEO and they are stupid and lazy and bla bla whatever. The second you are robbed or your rig is stolen or someting stolen off it, you are the first to scream for help from the law. You bitch and whine about were not doing our job running tags or finding your stolen whatever. Yet if you get pulled over and checked or just followed you bitch and whine.

After the hanous acts that happend yesterday, all you folks that think you have been violated and that this country is too strict better move on to another country cause its fixin to get one hell of a lot worse. Let me go even further, I am of Portugese Decent and have dark skin and Jet black hair. I hate to shave so I only do for work days. On my days off I look just like the stereotypical terrorist. I usually have on raggady oil and grease stained cloths from working on my rigs or my friends. Hell the way I look I expect to be looked at and pulled over, soon as they find out nothings wrong I am on my way with no problems.

Sorry for the long post, just gettin tired of seeing all the friggen whining about Law Enforcement. If you want to make changes, file complaints in WRITING and have the balls to put your name on it.

I personal like the fact that our campus public saftey, rent-a-cops, decided that money was more important than admitting to a mistake. Campus parking has been redone since last year, and of course no one but freshman have been told about these changes. Well I park in what was a legal spot last year. I left my truck there for 4 or 5 days, in the same spot. I watched the cops write tickets out for parking in a reserved spot without a reserved ticket. Well the next day I am watchin them again, I could see my truck from my window and I HATE people snooping around my truck. Well as I am staring the cop and the cheif down, the cheif makes eye contact and I continue to stare and not back down. Well the cheif is looking in this one cars window and really checking it out, and has me pissed that he may do that to my rig also. Well I goto class, and what do you know I've got a parking ticket. Well it just so happens that the Student Life Director is out there and I ask he what is the parking situation and show him my ticket. He tells what's going on with parking and that i should only have a warning. I goto Public Safety and tell them the my story. I fill out their BS appeal paper work. They put a hold on my transcript and registration, which fawked me over cause I needed to change some classes, and then denied my ticket. The next day after I filled out the appeal they spray bombed the lot labeling what was open and what was reserved parking. I am gald to see that Public Safety at the Colorado School of Mines is more concerned about their $25 than saying we were wrong in giving you this ticket, you should have gotten a warning. Stuck up fawkers! The thing was I was calm, collected and very respectful with them. Oh well, I guess the truth doesn't always win out. <IMG SRC="smilies/pissed.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/pissed.gif" border="0">

There's a guy in my club who is on the Mesa PD. He gave me a lift in his Jeep on a failed trail run a few weeks ago, seemed like a nice enough guy. But I'll be damned if I ever run into a nice cop when he/she is in uniform. I used to live in Texas and still travel through Texas on occasion. I always say TX has the friendliest drivers in the nation and I've never been harassed there. Of course I've always been driving my '99 Tacoma with duct tape over potentially offensive bumper stickers. <IMG SRC="smilies/innocent.gif" border="0">

In AZ however while driving trucks that cost considerably less then my $23000 Taco I've been harassed to no end. I had an '85 4Runner that was totalled in an accident. Thanks to the DPS officer involved and the fact the responsible party's uncle was a judge I was unable the recover the damages the my truck and I'm currently involved in a lawsuit where I'm getting sued for over $50,000. So that's the main reason for my contept for the police, along with the fact that an unarmed aquaintence of mine was murdered by cops armed with AR15s then left in the summer heat with the unarmed girl in the truck for a day. I agree that there are good cops out there, but the only ones I run into in uniform are the ones that have egos that can hardly fit in a Crown Vic and are dumber then a box of wet rocks. So no offence was meant to any good cops out there, I still hope to someday run into one of you when you're wearing a badge.
