: SSR'S or MT/R'S Which is true ??
Kamikaze124 08-19-2002, 08:34 PM Ok , I have looked at alot of the post , Question I have is this ...Which tires comes the closest to being true to its size? Im looking at putting 37's on my jeep, and I am curious ... Also, Does anyone know what a 37 12.50 15 MT/R is running ... What is the cheapest on both tires price wise?... And last but not least , which tire would work the best.. I run in the mud, clay , and some rocks, and slick hard packed dirt.. Any Ideas, before i go buy some... Thanks for any help:confused:
My 37" MTRs measure exact on 15x10 Champ locks.
B.A.R.K 08-19-2002, 09:21 PM if you will be in mud dirt and and clay more that rock i deffinetly say go with the swamper, if you we on mostly rock i say an MTR, MTR's do even come close to SSR's in the mud, we dont have many rocks down south so MTR's are mostly for a DD
Jason R 08-19-2002, 11:58 PM Swampers if you run Mainly in the Mud. MT/Rs are great on the rocks tho.
4Bangler 08-20-2002, 06:29 AM I love my MT/R's but the 35's measure short on a 15x10, I hope the 37's are dead on cuz that's coming soon. SSR's seem to measure close on the smaller sizes, not sure on anything over 35" but they seem to wear fast. MTR's are not as sidewall punture resistant as they claim, but better than my old BFG's, my last three sets of tires, two sets of 33" BFG mud and this set of 35" MTR, I've cut a side wall within the first 500 miles, so now I've got two nearly new BFG's and one brand new (150 miles max) MT/R that are junk, wonder what I can make out of them?
P&T Jeeps 08-20-2002, 08:40 AM the 37" SSR's are tall, taller than the 37" Bogger...
kcpsg 08-20-2002, 09:10 AM not sure about the MT/R but my SSR's have run better on rock than they have in the mud, I haven't seen anybody running the MT/R's around here. I looked on National tire's web site and looked @ the spec sheet no specs yet on the 37" listed but all the other tires of theirs run a 1/2" - a full 1" larger on the OD than listed and the price of 37" are going for about $206. I hope that helps. On a personal note I absolutely love the way my SSR's handle and perform offroad but I go mostly on Rock not alot of mud
ColoYJ 08-20-2002, 09:27 AM My MTR's measure 36 1/4" on 15x8.
MTR's will outperform SSR's on the rocks and the road. In the mud, especially clay, the SSR should work better. They have a habit of the tread chunking off in the rocks and the sidewall isnt that tough.
I bought my MTRs at my local Discount tire CO for around $180. I heard from a local fellow that he was able to order 37" for $160 at Walmart. He said that he tried a few walmarts and only one manager would order that big of a size.
nobody20 08-20-2002, 09:28 AM Interco says SSR is 36.8"

I have been pricing 37 MTR's
Phoenix, AZ Discount Tire $175 mounted & balanced
Austin, TX Discount Tire $192 mounted & balanced
Group buy + shipping $170

I am running 35 MTR's and pretty happy. Gonna get 37 MTR's but would rather get BFG Krawler if they were going to be out anytime soon.
wild1 08-20-2002, 09:34 AM I have a set of ssr's on the tj and are very happy with them, with 40,000 kms on them with lots to go. I had a set of ssr's on the yj but sold them to go with boggers and a trailer. Friends run the mtrs and side by side I would go with the ssr's again. Mtr's would be my second choice without a doubt for a daily driver. And 1/2 height difference isnt going to make it or break it on most trails.

where are you able to find rocks around Lafayette, you almost have to drive out of state to get away from the mud
P&T Jeeps 08-20-2002, 11:09 AM good question Swamper, where do you wheel? Where have you been hiding this CJ w/ 37 SSR's? Who do you wheel with out of state?
H8monday 08-20-2002, 05:04 PM The SSR's perform really well in the rocks as well as loose dirt.
The problem is they, have the weakest sidewall of any tire I have ever ran off road. It is ridiculous how weak they are. I went through 5 tires with sidewall tears in about 6 months,..compared to 2 in 5 years running SX's.

Beast40 08-20-2002, 05:35 PM My 37" MTRs measure 36.3" on a 15x8.

Why did you continue to buy SSR's?
Road hazard?
Sponsorship?
Too much cash laying around?

Took me 2 1/2 years to rip one. I only do about 5 good runs a year though on Rubicon, Fordyce & Dusey-Ershim. Have'nt done anything extreme, like Johnson Valley.
They do great on rock. I think the extra width helps.
kcpsg 08-20-2002, 07:57 PM HEY! I wanna know too
We go to Gilmer Tx and a few places around St Francisville however not many rocks around St Francisville

ive been hiding it under my hood right next to the 4banger, and no havent wheeled with anyone out of state (as you know) because i have to go with the only guy who would bail me out, and it doesnt take an explorer to know there arent rocks in south LA, just be observant on a road trip
P&T Jeeps 08-20-2002, 08:22 PM numnuts, when did you get a CJ5 w/ 37 SSR's? :mad3: I commented you on your good question, and was asking kpcsg where he wheels. Everyone else seemed to understand...
P&T Jeeps 08-20-2002, 08:43 PM who do you wheel with; LA 4x4 or Beefy, Piggy, and the Outcasts?
mfg4rox 08-20-2002, 10:06 PM I've run both SSRs and MT/Rs on my TJ. I liked the SSRs more. They seam to run large in just about every size. The SSRs work great on the rocks, but the rocks where I live are just big, not sharp. I really liked the SSRs on the snow and ice though, felt like I had chains on, but didn't. They do wear kinda fast though.:D

If you managed to tear two sidewalls on SX's, then the trails you run are obviously super tough, and you were dumb for trying to run SSR's in the first place. 5 sidwalls in 6 months, didn't you get the picture after the first 2 or 3? I feel sorry for the tire store that provided you with hazard :flipoff2:
