I'm looking for ideas on homebrew OD options in a daily driver EB with 31s and stock 289/going to stock 5.0, not much offroad use. Looking for the anti-bling, good 'ol homebrew engineering.
NV3550 is a popular swap, but why not use the jeep tcase? Looks like 2000+ wranglers, liberty's, and cherokees had em, maybe some dakotas and 1500s had them? Maybe even score a 4-1 rubicon xfer. Checking out here:

It says T5s came in jeeps and S10 4wds, that sounds like an EB drivetrain could be cobbled together after surfing CL for a weekend.
I am starting to think a toyota tacoma tranny and tcase would be pretty sweet, and has held up in toys with engine swaps. Didn't take any measurments, but a quick eyeball under my eb and my tacoma, looked like the tcase wouldn't cause any interferrence.

Anybody seen or done anything out of the norm?

Your transfer case is limited to the 23" or so inches between the EB frame. As far as the manual tranny? I went for strength, not drive ability, 351w/6/203/205 doubler...... Not a gas friendly combo.

Not interesting but Look for a ZF 5 speed. OD plus a 5.72: granny gear. They came behind 351W powered Ford F250's. I would stay away from the Mazda M5OD. It is a light duty tranny vs the medium duty ZF bu tit could work. Then there is a Ranger Torque splitter available: http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-31525_froogle.htm

My EB has an Advanced Adapters Ranger box in front of the NP435. It's a 27% overdrive that can be shifted in any gear, so it essentialy doubles your gears.

I like it.

I lucked into a early aod/d20 adaptor for $50, pick it up this saturday. Guess this one's getting a slushbox:) cool thing about that, I'm using a bench, so the floor will be uncluttered, and I can find a van tilt column with a shifter pretty easily. So now I'm looking for an efi 5.0/aod donor car.

I'm still interested in what other people are running, as plans can always change.

That ranger box is slick, nice that it moves the tranny back, gets the shifter out from under the dash. But its too bling and too expensive for my taste.

The C6 203 205 is definately a brute:smokin:

My brother in law is putting his 72 together with a cummins 4bt, got a gm adapter, was going to run a th400 203/205 doubler, but was having problems finding flywheel and the right tailshaft IIRC. I rec'd an NV4500 from a dodge, though they are pricey. But he found a truck being parted, got the starter, flywheel, clutch, motor plate, trans, tcase, driveshafts, for $1k. He's got a HD unit, granny gear, OD, 2.7?-1 lo range, with factory supported parts, no adapters. He'll recoup most of that when he sells the parts he's been gathering.
