: warning, no tech series question.
spork2367 01-13-2009, 07:26 AM i'm looking at 2 series rovers. a 63 and a 71. both need frames, 71 bulkhead is probably not repairable b/c of road salt. the truss on the front axle of the 63 is rusted completely through...probably not a good sign :flipoff2:. both are complete and ran in the mid 90's....guy wants 1000.00 for each. obviously they aren't worth 1000.00 a piece. the 63 has original selectable hubs, and tropical roof. 71 has kodiak heater. both have jump seats. seem to be highly optioned for series land rovers.
now the question. is 700.00 a piece a fair price, or is someone getting the short end of the deal? i know you can buy running series rovers for less than 5,000.
aloharover 01-13-2009, 09:04 AM Need frames, and one bulkhead (probably two). Niether have run for 10years.
You are basically buying a bunch of parts.
$500 for the pair
Yorker 01-13-2009, 11:34 AM for a parts truck like that- the price around here is usually $400-$500 each around here. To pay $700 for one as you describe it would have to have something neato on it like a PTO winch or Capstan winch or maybe a tropical top (IMHO).
spork2367 01-13-2009, 12:13 PM thanks for the replies. that helps. the 63 has a tropical top. the 71 has a kodiak heater. i'm not sure how common the heater was. i also wasn't sure how common the selectable hubs were. i don't want them, but thought someone might for a resto.
fridgefreezer 01-13-2009, 05:48 PM Selectable hubs are £50 brand new if you really want to add a point of failure.
HandBuilt 01-13-2009, 06:17 PM Yeah, really depends on location. What you are describing is worth about zero up here. An MK4 Kodiak is nice but you can get them for 200$, so it doesn't add much to the value. You always seem to pay more for your first, after that they just follow you home and before you know it you're Ike :flipoff2:
JasperG 01-13-2009, 07:40 PM Paid 550 for one in Fl in rough condition. Frame was toasted, bulkhead was restorable but it took forever. I thought that was a fair price, but I just wanted the body to graft onto my RRC frame (body was rusted off). I parted the rest of the series and actually made money! If you want a real series, you will be better off buying a running one with a good frame. Gordo
spork2367 01-13-2009, 07:42 PM well, i got the 71 for 675...more than it's worth, but oh well. there honestly aren't a lot around here, so the extra money could very well justify not driving further to get one. he told me he had a buddy interested in the 63....my trailer will hold two, so i'll take some extra cash and see.
cheapo 01-13-2009, 08:35 PM paid 600 for mine with a sweet frame only little surface rust. Crap motor but it ran. lots of dents though and it was a 59.
spork2367 01-14-2009, 11:35 AM now, do i keep it original, make an adapter and run a 22re in front of the rover drivetrain, run an entire toy drivetrain, use my disco axles, use my entire disco drivetrain, build up the olds 455 i have laying around...i don't need anymore projects, considering i've got about 50 current unfinished products, but oh well. i also have the diamond axles with rover offsets i had built for the disco. too damn many options. then, if i use those what do i do with the stupid ass disco. i love the body and frame, just hate everything else about it.
JasperG 01-14-2009, 02:02 PM If you are anywhere near CA there is a series frame on ebay right now at 50 bucks. It is powdercoated but he admits it isnt perfect. It might be cheaper to just buy an old RRC or D1 that runs and pop the body on that. Im not saying it is easy though...basically it is but as with any project it is easy to get CARRIED away.
spork2367 01-15-2009, 07:55 AM that's a good deal. sucks i'm in PA.
so what will be easier, putting the series body on my discovery frame, or putting the discovery drivetrain in a series frame?
i'm leaning towards a nice galvanized frame from rovers north (when funds allow). i'm thinking 4.0 and drivetrain, my diamond axles, and maybe toyota leaf springs.
what kind of money could i recoup from the series drivetrain. i can get the motor running before i pull it apart. the only reason the guy stopped driving it in the mid 90's was because it needed a clutch.
Yorker 01-17-2009, 03:14 PM Used Series stuff is strange, sometimes it is worthless, (usually when I own it)- other times it goes for silly money like that banjo steering wheel that just sold for $570 on ebay...
RoverDan 01-27-2009, 01:25 PM It's amazing what else can go wrong with an old vehicle when it's been sitting for a long time. I bought one for parts the supposedly just needed a tranny. Well that's what it needed when it was parked. By the time I towed it home the rear axle was allmost pulled loose from the frame. Axles themselves were in pretty sad shape etc etc.
As for the $570 banjo steering wheel, I've got one with a custom leather cover on it. That's got to be work another $200, lets start the bidding
evilfij 01-27-2009, 03:11 PM Where in PA are you?
Ebaying the parts will get $800-1000 out of any series II or early IIa, less for a Series III. Jump seats are worth coin if they are complete and not trashed. How are the interiors? I would be interested in the 63 trop top if you are in SE PA. Does the 71 have a brake tower and booster?
Weird stuff fetches a lot of money in the series world too -- like the faux wood ashtrays and the factory oil pressure gauge.
BTW the trusses always rust out. If it holds oil the truss is easily repaired.
