I have a 1980 3/4 ton Suburban sm 465 tranny and np205 transfer case.My front driveshaft is trashed. What year donors will fit, does it have to be 3/4 ton or manual transmission? This truck is due to be sacrificed this summer for the betterment of my FSJ so I don't want to buy a new driveshaft but there's alot of winter left and in Wisconsin even the nuns drive 4x4's :p.

easiest thing would be to go to local parts store and buy some damn u-joints and fix it. Otherwise, you'll burn up an equal amount of gasoline trying to find one the right length and configuration...

Splines in the slip joint are chewed out :(

....damn, that sucks then.

If you have access to a welder, I'd go to nearest junckyard and find one with a good slip and yoke and cut off the end and weld on the new one. Of course it would not be balanced, but that might not matter either...

It might help if you could provide details on your particular drive shaft. Is it a flanged double caradan, yoke double caradan, or just a regular yoke and joint? Someone here might have same setup and can measure theirs. I'd guess you have a flanged dbl caradan setup.

It does matter what tranny your replacement shaft comes from due to length of the different tranny configurations (SM465, TH350, TH400).

I'd get your tape measure and go junkyard hoppin...:flipoff2:

bump it or crawl it?

Yes hit the yards, they should know right away if they have one that will fit. Get on the phone. I just bought one for my 89 suburban from a yard the other day. $75. which is much cheaper that $300 from the Auto parts store

If you get lucky enough to find one, any truck from the same year range with the same drivetrain should work.

Just make sure (like already mentioned) that the driveshafts match in length, double cardan, flanged and so on.

HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY, A good friend of a friends dad just so happened to have just what I needed in his old wood fetching truck. It's a wreck but he said I could have the drivetrain out of it as long as I get the truck gone by spring.Which means I may be keeping my 80 Suburban afterall.:D The wife is gonna kill me.:shaking::flipoff2:
Thanks for the help guys, unfortunately most salvage yards around here won't let you crawl around.Totally blows.I'm from Cali and one of my fondest memories is scrounging the PickApart for stuff for my 68 Barracuda. The cars I saw in there in the mid eighties would make you cry.
