: Gun review-Taurus .44 magnum

I've been wanting a big(ger) bore gun for a while, I've had an itch for a .460 or a .500 but it's just not in the cards right now. So I picked up a Taurus cheap and with 250 rounds of ammo included, it was good deal. I waited through my ten day hell and picked her up yesterday. I had a full on crappy day and I had headache but I decided to hit the range on the way home, it's been a while since I've been so excited about shooting something.

He. He he, he he he.:D What a fun gun. Someone had left some lemons at the range and I had some pint size water bottles. Ka blooie! Good stuff. I was shooting some 300 gr. reloads that I got with the gun and put about 100 rounds through it. I've waited far too long to get something bigger than my .45's. It was almost full dark by the time I was done and I had some decent flame coming out of the top ports.

In all I give the .44 four :D's out of four :D's, especially with the Hogue grips. There are few problems that can't be solved by putting a lot of lead downrange.:mr-t:

No cool name, just 6 rounds of pure badassery. Disintegrating lemons make me gigle like a little girl. Watermelons this weekend. :D

I have the same gun in 357 but mine holds 8 :D. I refer to it as my high cap revolver. It is really fun plus the porting and heavy assed underlug make shooting hot loads very nice.

I have a 44 mag tracker. I bought the hogue grips aftermarket so its close to what you have but 4.5 barrel with reliefs on the top. I have put about 400 rounds through it without a single problem. Perfect camping gun for the zombies and bears alike

I guess now I have some competition buying 44 mag components from gunbroker.

I have been buying lead bullets at about half of what they cost for 45 colt.
Right now I am searching for cheap brass.
I am high bidder on two auctions on auctionarms.

I'd love to buy a taurus revolver but all the other ones have that stupid billboard written on the side "raging bull"

Yours actually looks nice without the billboard

I used to have a Taurus .44mag. It was a great shooting gun, and one I should have never sold.:(

Check on auction arms, there are a few used ones on there.

edit: I checked the Taurus website and I guess all their big revolvers are raging bulls.
I thought it was just he ones bigger than 44.

Yes, yes you do. I found some brass on Glock talk the other day but that's about it. Buying once fired brass from retailers seems to be a joke, they want as much for the brass as I can buy loaded ammo for locally.

I've been buying once fired clean brass for $10 a hundred locally. you can get cast slugs cheap, ~$110 per 1k. I mostly shoot copper jackets since my tracker is ported which are ~$21 per 100 now :(.

.430 Lead bullets are cheap on gunbroker right now.
I've bought close to 1000 in the last month at what I consider half price.

My username on gunbroker and auction arms is McLaneMatt.
Give me yours and I won't be bidding against you (at least not for components )

If you have any brass you want to sell, I'm looking for about 500 and will pay a good price.

If the price gets near $14 per hundred, I'll just buy new

44 MAG $84.55 for 500 and $147.75 per 1000.

I buy it from a local guy at the gunshows, it's separated by headstamp and cleaned, once fired. We have another show at the end of the month, I can check his prices and pick some up if the price is still good. His inventory varies from show to show. He was selling standard rifle brass for $20/100 and most mag for $25/100. It's all been really good stuff so far.

With the size of the frame that looks like it would be a lot easier to control than a Ruger Blackhawk.

About half of retail and I got a few hundred rounds with it.

I've been getting them on gunbroker for about that price, and some a little cheaper.

The blackhawk is not hard to control.

So based solely on the recommendation of some guy who never goes shooting, I picked up a Marlin .44 mag to compliment my handgun. I was pleasantly surprised when I checked my reloading book last night to find that the handgun loads and rifle loads are within .1 grain of each other with Win 296 and I'm getting something like 1300 fps in the Taurus and 1900 fps in the rifle without changing the load. Yee haw.:D

SilverZuk
03-19-2009, 01:36 PM
Yeah, "full house" loads are max for rifle and pistol.
I still shoot H110 on the magnum loads, the charge is slightly compressed.
The biggest factor is the crimp. I have run the crimp down to the point I had to back it off. It was like a grenade going off in your face shooting a Super Blackhawk.

Shoulda checked out the Bisley grip frame. They are niiiiiiice :smokin:

And I agree with SilverZuk. No way is a Blackhawk hard to control, even if it's in .44 mag.

Blackhawk or Superblackhawk? ;)

FWIW the old flat top 3 screw .44's had a smaller frame, comparable to the regular 3 screw Blackhawks. The old model non flat top Superblackhawks had a larger grip frame (believe it was XR3 by early designation).

When Ruger went with the New Models they made the Blackhawk grip frame larger (you can consequently interchange regular NM Superblackhawk and Blackhawk grip frames). My dad has stainless dragoon style grip frames on his .45 LC's and .357 NM stainless BH's (slightly oversized they must be fit- think they cost $150 each!).

I have OK sized hands, can shoot DE .44 with a decent grip, but grip rather low on the backstrap (pinky under the frame) on my SBH's. The thump a little harder that way, but the gun doesn't slide in the hand- I can thumb back the hammer with my off hand and rip shots without having to adjust grip.....up to stout 240gr loads, no problem.

With my style Bisleys suck, nothing terrible, but I get middle finger bump by the trigger guard-annoying. I also hate the old flat top small grip frames, they kind of hurt.

I'll take the big dragoon frame any day- it's more comfortable for me.

Interesting, I had the exact opposite problem with the dragoon frame (had to grip low, got my finger smacked by the trigger guard) which is why I went to the bisley frame. Much more comfortable for me recoil-wise and grip-wise.

So I picked up the same Taurus 44 NIB and recently had a chance to shoot it at the range. The cylinder repeatedly locked up and wouldn't rotate while trying to shoot it. Also very hard to open the cylinder. Everytime though, enough force would finally get it going again. Also, the spent shells were quite hard to eject out of the cylinder. This is my first new revolver though, so maybe that's how they are.

Any ideas?

Any ideas?I would guess that the cylinder not rotating is caused by the ammo not being seated far enough. The tolerance at the back of the cylinder on mine is so tight that it froze up on a primer that was just a hair too far out the other day. The primer was barely too high to feel if you ran your finger over it. The cylinder being hard to open would be caused by the same thing. I would try some different ammo. What were you using?

JohnC

WWB 230gr. I'll check the clearance at the back of the cylinder.
