: Stingers - Pros, Cons, Rights, Wrongs

Some guy on the Cruiser board flopped his rig and fawkied up a lot of shite. He went over backwards, but during the gymnastics, seemed to have come down hard on the front.

Anyhoo, as any good POR thread, the conversation has taken a number of different tangents, one being the use of stingers. Being the ignorant soul that I am, I have no experience, or even exposure to these devices. I did a search on "stinger", but it came up poor in terms of info. Therefore, I´d like to start a discussion to learn a little:

1) Are stingers worth their installation?
2) Is there an optimum design or fundamental design rules to keep in mind?? I´m speaking in terms of angle, height, protrusion, etc.
3) Has anyone ever seen a stinger hoop used in the rear??

Now don´t be shy. Let hear those opinions!!

:D

OF COUSE FAWKER!!!:flipoff2:

That´s the thread I was refering to, but I thought better to start a new one so as not to clog up a question about front hoops with stingers.

They ARE different things, ya know!!!!!!!!...:flipoff2:

What about the stinger fawking with your approach angles?

Yeah, sure, you can make it match the angle you originally had, but its sticking out farther.

I think I started the tangent on the stingers on the other topic.

Here is what I know about stingers:
1. They help to prevent front flips buy stopping you before you reach the point where you are going to go over instead of back down on the rubber. But momentum is a big problem here. Slow and you might go down, but fast you might go on over. Some might argue that you should drive out of the forward flip and then you wouldn’t need a stinger.
2. They seemed to emanate out of Arizona originally - anyway AZ rigs were where I first started seeming them.
3. In the early rock crawling comps the spotter would use them to gain leverage in moving the rig. Now spotters can’t touch the vehicle so this point is no longer valid for comps anyway - still valid for whellin.
4. I have seen a rig go over with a fairly large stinger. The stinger tubing actually failed just above the weld at the base to the frame.

Interesting that you brought up the rear stinger. I was thinking the same thing.

Bill the only reason I may make one is to protect the radiator.

But it's not going to be like those big honk'n Avalanche type.

I'm interested in this as well. I will likely be adding a stinger to my existing bumper very soon. With gussets on the back and side to strengthen it.

MIne isn't that drastic, but it doesn't mess with approach angle if you place it at the right angle either. Granted going down a steep hill and into a vertical climb will probably be a downfall, but I haven't ran into that yet either.
