: Who is running a hydraulic cluth in there chevy?
FullWidth 08-20-2002, 09:56 AM I have a 85 GMC 3/4 sierra classic longbed. Im putting a 5 spd NV 4500 in it and I want to run a hydralic clutch. I was wondering what everyone has done for this? I was planning on just getting a master cyclinder for my truck and mounting it below the cab on the frame kind of were the bracket for the old lever type clutch is mounted. Im not to sure how this would work and how easy it would be to fill though. I cant mount it on the firewall because of the windshield wiper motor. What did everyone use? When I get the clutch and the flywheel, do I get them for my truck, or for year of the truck that I pulled the tranny out of?? Thanks
4Bangler 08-20-2002, 12:44 PM Find an '85 or '86 and newer Blazer or pickup, they should have a hydraulic clutch setup on them factory, you should be able to use the Chevy clutch master and slave, although I'm not sure on the NV4500 bellhousing, it's different than the SM465, and I'm not sure if the slave mounts the same as the hydraulic 465 bellhousing. I'm surprised that your truck didn't have hydraulic clutch, or is it currently an auto?
FullWidth 08-20-2002, 10:31 PM My truck is currently a auto. I got a 5 spd out of a 94 chevy half ton 4x4. What year bellhousing should I get?? Can anyone take a pciture of your hydro stock setup or custom one?? Thanks
all the stock 85+ chevs have hydro clutch.
all the mounting spots are marked on the cab for the master no need to fabricate anything just buy and drill and bolt it on
if you want I have a complete parts list from the gm computer that I scanned when I did mine
did you get the bellhousing with your tranny? use it.
4Bangler 08-21-2002, 05:30 AM Yeah, use the bellhousing, clutch fork, throwout bearing, and slave cylinder from the trans donor vehicle, and check that your flywheel is the same thickness as the one the trans came from, it should be
FullWidth 08-21-2002, 10:16 PM I dont see on my truck were the clutch master would mount. I dont see were on the firewall because right now thats were the windshield wiper is also. I dont know were it would mount or were the whole through the cab would go. Does anyone have a pic of there truck I could see?? Thank you!
What about the flywheel. Do you have to get the engine rebalanced internally because u r switching from an auto to manuel because I have a 98 v6 from an astro that someone said needed to be rebalanced because I went to a manuel tranny. Anyone know, I heard that all the engines were inner balanced after 93'?
I have a pic somewhere that I took for a CK5 member.
you want it emailed?
it is not where you think it should be it is lower and to the DS some
I missed on my first attempt at drilling so you can see my extry holes in the image :(
pull the inner fender and you should have tons of room
the spot usually is hidden in that black goo chev put on the firewall
no pics for you hotmail boy.

I added it to webshots but it will take awhile for it to appear in the com page

FullWidth 08-25-2002, 06:53 PM Ok thanks.
The tranny is from a 93 1/2 ton 4wd. So I need to get a 93 cluth, 93 slave cylinder, and a 93 bellhouseing correct?
Ok, what about the flywheel? Arent auto flywheels to skinny, and wont the 93 have a diffrent bolt pattern?
Is the 85 Slave big enough for that 5 spd tranny? Anyone have a pedal and filler neck for sale??
chevylad 08-25-2002, 08:19 PM I was just wondering if the nv4500 came in a 1/2 ton truck...
I am sure that you know the diffence in a nv3500 and a nv4500 but I did not realize that was possible. Just curious...
I just did a nv3500 to nv4500 swap in my 1/2 ton ('95 truck - '95 tranny). It was a 100% direct swap...
Good luck.

I dunno mang, sure looks like a master to me. The slave should be attached to the bellhousing, and as such you should have had pictures of it mounted to one, not mounted to a firewall.
yeah it is a master.
as the question was asking about the master I thought I would show him that.
I dont see on my truck were the clutch master would mount. I dont see were on the firewall because right now thats were the windshield wiper is also. I dont know were it would mount or were the whole through the cab would go. Does anyone have a pic of there truck I could see?? Thank you!
you right mang, my bad. :emb3: sorry bout that, got side tracked with other posts discussing slaves...
FullWidth 08-26-2002, 08:58 PM So what do I do about the flywheel? Use the auto one? Get a flywheel for a 85 manuel?
I have one other question, how do I tell if the tranny is a NV3500 or a NV4500? All 1/2 tone had a 3500??

No, auto's used what's commonly called a flexplate. It's much thinner, and allows the torque converter to attach to the engine. Also has a ring gear on it for the starter.
Manuals require a flywheel. MUCH thicker/heavier. There are a couple styles available, and which one you need depends on your engine. If your engine is a pre-86, you'll need the older style. If it's a post-86, you need the newer style. The difference is in the bolt pattern. In 86, GM went to a single rear main seal, and also changed the bolt pattern on the crank shaft. Its still the same number of bolts, just a tighter pattern. There are also two different ring gear versions (for your starter) and consiquently different flywheel diameters (for the diffferent clutch sizes). The ring gears came in 153 tooth and 168 tooth counts. Clutch sizes are available in 10.5", 11" & 12" sizes.
My enging is an 88, so I picked up a post-86 flywheel that had a 168 tooth ring gear and measured 14" in diameter. This allowed me to run a 12" clutch.
If you have a pre-86 engine, I have a flywheel in the garage I'll sell you for $25 plus shipping. It too is 14" diameter w/168 tooth ring gear and will allow you to run a 12" clutch as well.
Hope this helps...
Chris
it is kinda sad to see that after you have the tranny you are trying to ID it.
I hope you got it real cheap
chevylad 08-29-2002, 08:17 PM NV4500: Is a two piece unit. The bellhousing is aluminum and the gear casing is cast iron. Fairly easily rebuildable.
NV3500: Is a one piece unit. The bellhousing and gear case are aluminum and are one piece. When broken throw away and visit the salvage yard.
