http://www.pirate4x4.com/trailreports/arca_farmington2001/friday/Image032.jpg

As you can see in this sequence, my 1/4 elliptic rear had nothing to do with rolling. It was level.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/trailreports/arca_farmington2001/friday/Image018.jpg
As you can see in this picture, the rear suspension is doing it's job very well. Many people had a very tough time on this obstacle. We scored a perfect "zero" and had one of the fastest times of the weekend.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/trailreports/arca_farmington2001/saturday/Image007.jpg

A nice picture of the suspension working while going down a verticle drop. Several rigs rolled here.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/trailreports/arca_farmington2001/saturday/Image026.jpg

A good picture of a very steep climb. The rear suspension handles STEEP climbs excellent. No hop, etc.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/trailreports/arca_farmington2001/saturday/Image048.jpg

A great picture of me perparing to climb A7. You can see that the suspension is level, but the height of the vehicle makes things interesting. Again, A7 kicked many vehicles asses, even rigs with exotic coil over suspensions like Shannon Campbell's buggy had a very difficult time climbing this. We climbed in on our first attempt, no problem.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/trailreports/arca_farmington2001/saturday/Image084.jpg

A picture of the rear suspension maxed out (check the limiting straps) just before climbing a crazy ass climb on A2. God that was one crazy hole!

The only thing I'm not happy with is that I built the springs myself and I must have used broke down springs on the right side because it always wants to lean too far that way. Even tough it sits level on flat ground.

Lake Rat I like that and you left the sawzall in the box. I want to build a 1/4 elip. but I have no idea how to engineer it at all. I want to leave the rear of my tub on also.

Glondark were you going to post a website or link on the first reply? I would also like some direction on this. I have the equip. and welding skills just no engineering experience.

This will give me an excuse to buy a nice bender and build a custom frame for the cj. By the way Lance you always be GETTIN IT AWN!!!!!!WAY TO GO!!!!

Here is a shot of A 1/4 system I am working on with rocktoy. it doesnt offer as much flex as 4 link (cause of the radius arms) but give the rig about a 60 front 40 rear flex and a ton of stability on and off road. Im toying with the panhard mount to give it more droop... Im after a 50-50 balance. its been tested already and is in fine tune stage.

Do you guys that are currently running 1/4 setups get much rear-steer??? It kind of looks like it on some of the pics, but they are just pics so I can't really tell.

And how do they perform on the street (if any of you drive them on the street that is)???

yes.. i am curious about driveability also.. am kicking around the ideal of this next year when i get back from over seas.. since i will be changing the axles..
im not talkin drivin 12 hours in the thing.. but more around town.. a few miles to work n back.. i really want to move the rear axle back.. and bring up the front also... and coils with 1/4 is what im leaning towards..
unfortunately there are no rigs like this in these necks of the woods.. so this will be trial and error for me.. i have access to a shop... can do the welding and bending..

Flatty

As for driveability, it drives better now than it did with the leafs. It is like driving a caddilac down the road. My bro drives his all the time to the trail and back.

There never really was a true write up, I did a half assed one on the SRC page, under Project Flatty. go near the bottom of the BB and it shou8ld be there.

heres a local guy that had this setup on a runner.

I think I would rather run coil overs, its more of a controlled flex. you dont get dumped off your axles like with 1/4. Lots of cool setups out there though!

Flatty
10-12-2001, 11:59 AM
What are you talking about "dumped off your axles?" I have more control with the 1/4 ellip and the 4 link than I did with Leaf springs. I say gop for it. way cheaper than coilovers, and work just as well, if not better. Save the money for Front coil overs instead

just my opinion.. I have only ran around with a couple 1/4 elliptic rigs and they all seem to act the same. maybe I'm all wrong so do whatever you want guy, I'll run with coilovers.

here are some of my EB. i was not after enormous flex, but it will still do a 1,000 on a 30 Deg. ramp.
i think the 4 link in the front also helps balance it well.

I am contemplating doin a 4 link too and I gotta say, you designe is very intresting. I have noticed usually guys run the lower links parralell and the upper and lower links mount in genarally the same area. I would think there would be more lateral stability with the lower links ran in the configuration you have them. Is that your reasoning or are there any other advantages?.
I also noticed that you upper links are considerably higher and a bit shorter than the lowers, what was the resoning in the placement and how does the pinion angle change as the axle droops?
Sorry for all the dumb questions <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> I am just very intrested in your designe and I like to see people doing things just a little different (thinking out side the box)

Thanks, Don
