: Need more rear flex

I am running a D60 rear on my YJ with 44044 springs. The flex is good but not great. I was looking to get more flex out of it. I only do rockcrawling so would revolvers work better than a 3/4 elliptical setup?

Open the spring clamps and get longer shocks if you need them. Revolvers are not the solution. Those springs should flex fine SOA if you wheel them and break them in. You can't just slap it on a ramp and expect it to be awesome.

no no huck the leaves and put in coils, I can ramp 850 on a 30 degree ramp.

Go out and abuse the hell out of those leafs with the spring clamps opened up, they will soften up with time. What your springs need is a little foreplay, you can't just dive right in and expect everything to go smoothly, you have to sweet talk your springs, caress them, warm them up, then, and only then, will you be able to get giggy with them.

I have never been on a ramp but my heap can climb well for a 1/2 done rig. Wouldn't a ramp only show flex ability in a limited setting? I mean I have seen guys ramping at the local off road shop, and they disco the front driveline, and flatten 2 tires or do a number of other odd things to make them go up farther.

Seems to me that while the coil suggestion is probably a good one the ramp fails to prove real world off road ability. Please bash away if I need a good lesson.

coils perform very well off-road, true, RTI doesn't mean a thing on the trail, but it is a good tool for seeing what hits and what fits, plus the number give a general idea of a suspension's abilities, but there are too many ways to cheat it. I think coils springs belong in ink pens, but I'm kinda goofy, seems old reliable leafs are going the way of the mullet, but I just crank up my AC/DC and don't listen to those coil boingers make fun of my rig.

hell...
I ride on coils. I get EXCELLENT trail articulation (but never had it on a ramp), my traction is better w/ coils than other peoples' leafs, but I'm not STOOPID enough to think that there aren't leaf set-ups out there that work WAY better than my kit.

There are pro's & con's to each setup...

You gotta break your shit in. Test it. Tweak it. Break it. Y'all know the drill.:D

Good to know I aint a total goof (Least not today) I think we might get along well 4banger. Only problem is I am a real sicko I keep my AC/DC Tapes (WHo made Who needs to be replaced) next to my George Strait tapes heheeh

If your not real heavy above those axles you might try pulling a leaf out of the pack. I removed the 2 leaf from the bottom of the pack. It made a big difference in how much I could stuff the tire. If they are new springs, you need to abuse them a little then see how they flex!:flipoff2:

You probably already did this but I thought I would mention it. Remove all your shocks and check your flex. Many times guys with SOA do not do inboard/centre mount rear shocks, and therefore can not put a long enough shock rear. Also, what shackles are you running? Loosen your shackle bolts slightly and see if there is a difference. My SOA suffered when my shackle bolts were to tight.

Good point Rat Patrol, it would be nice to know your sprung and unsprung weight in the rear, if you're light on sprung weight and your springs are running at little to no compression at static ride height, then pull a leaf, if you're good on sprung weight, good on stuff and just looking for addtional down travel (you originally asked about 3/4 ellip or revolvers) open up your clamps and check for any restrictions in down travel. You might (glup) put it on a ramp and see what's holding you up. If you've got a good anti-wrap bar then a buggie leaf will give you some controlled downtravel, and if you arch it away from the frame, with will provide a little more ground pressure, since you're running a D60 I'd bet that you've got plenty of unsprung weight in the rear so just eliminating some restrictions might do the trick. I'm not a big fan of drop-away gimmicks that give uncontrolled droop for that "did my axle just fall off?" feeling.

Bonestripper, I get along with everyone, but George Strait tapes? Okay, but if you tell me I've got a purty mouth I'm outa here. I listen to AC/DC one day, Puddle of Mud the next, Tool or Stevie Ray Vaughn the next, just about anything, but country's where I draw the line. Just kidding, them Chicks from Dixie are cool, except the fat one.

Thanks guys for the information. I've only had them on the trail 3 times, probably just need to break them in a little more. My front has awesome flex with the M.O.R.E. SRS w/ buggy spring but the rear just can't compete. I will try your suggestions. Thanks again!
