My girlfriend picked up a 91 range rover today for a winter truck / off road toy.

Has old nasty gas in it right now and it's sat for about a year. I cant get the rear glass to latch to save my life and i managed to pull the fucking handle off in my hand tonight after dropping it off at my garage

Is there some common problem for the rear glass?

Also i noticed the turn signal switch is snapped clean off. So i'll be looking for one of those. Anyone have good sites book marked for these monsters? I've always wanted one and she wants to lift it a little and put some meats on it, so it should prove to be fun. :D

If you guys could point out some of the common problematic areas that would be awesome.

on to the pics.

If you guys could point out some of the common problematic areas that would be awesome.

1) Everything under the hood
2) Everything inside the passenger compartment
3) Everything outside the passenger compartment
4) Everything electrical
5) Everything mechanical
6) And since it's from Michigan and looking at the gate, there are rot holes in the floors, rockers and rear trunk floor.

Hope someone gave you that truck. Remember their address so you can go back and punch them in the face after a couple months of dealing with that thing.

The rear hatches are the first thing to rust out. Can't see for the snow but I'm sure the corners are rotted. The hatches rust and the pawls are stuck preventing the latch from locking around the pin on the body. They all do it. The bolts holding the handle on corrode and snap off all the time too. Don't bother looking for a used one...They all look just like yours. No worries, the new ones are only $200. You'll soon realize the whole lift gate isn't worth screwing with and buy a complete replacement along with a couple of latches. After spending $1000 back there and getting it all together, the first time you get one rear wheel up on a rock your thousand dollar lift gate will pop open and if the shocks are still good, it'll flip up and the big dust cloud behind you will now be inside the truck. Forever after that you'll have a $2.00 bungee cord holding your thousand dollar lift gate closed.

So you've just spend $1000 and a couple afternoons building and installing a new lift gate that doesn't stay shut.

Welcome to Range Rover ownership!

EDIT: It would be easier to get a new girlfriend than to be stuck working on the shatbox every weekend! :flipoff2:

Ilostmymind.com eh?

Did this domain name predate the acquisition of the Rover?

These trucks are stupidly easy and inexpensive to lift, but the axles aren't real strong and the transfer case is less than ideal-serviceable, but not ideal. The biggest tires you can safely run will be 32" and that's only if you're careful and don't snap the ten-spline axles. Later trucks had 24 spline axles that are marginally stronger.

Before you do much of anything more with it, check the swivel ball oil, drain the water and put some new 90 wt in them both.

Perhaps I was a bit harsh.

Tell ya what....The more pictures you post of your chickie, the more we'll help you get/keep that turd running.

There is an in-line fuel filter by the frame rail under the right rear door. Pull one half of it off and you can siphon the old gas out from there. Get all you can out from there and put a few gallons of clean gas in. There should be a schrader valve on the fuel rail on top of the motor. Pull the valve out and put a chuck of old hose on it leading into a bucket. have your girl cycle the key on and off until the fuel pump pushes out the rest of the bad gas from the lines, fuel rail, etc. You'll be able to smell when the bad gas is all out.

Cute girl.

However, the above won't do you much good. A truck of that vintage will not have the fuel pressure test port.

I can just about guarantee you that the fuel filter won't come off the fuel lines. The fittings seize up long before a truck gets as old as yours. Not to worry, carefully cut the crimp fittings off the hardline, you'll find hose barbs beneath and then find a suitable fuel filter (I'll have a P/N tomorrow) and use some suitable hose and clamps.

If you really want to get all of the fuel out of it, you're probably better off breaking the line at the fuel rail-it will be the one that takes a 9/16 or 14 M/M wrench to disconnect.

Were it me, I'd add some good fuel, maybe some Heet, injector cleaner, octane boost, Marvel Mystery oil and try to start it with the fuel that's in it-oh yeah, maybe even some E-85!

It's an old Land Rover. They do not like to be babied and are far more resilient than some people think they are-within reason.

(get a new rotor/distributor cap/wires/plugs before you even try to start it, the older trucks are REALLY sensitive to weathered ignition components)

Damn nice pics, of the truck that is:D If you want a permenant fix for the tailgate, Rovers North sells aluminum tailgate kits, though expect to spend some $. Or just buy several used ones. If your new to Rovers, Land Rover is no longer making parts for the Classic Rangies but there is plenty of aftermarket support available. Do some searching and you'll find the usual parts houses for new/used parts. www.rangerovers.net is a good place for general Rangie info.

Dude, I would. One of the coolest classic RRs I used to wheel with had sawzall fenders and a flexible plastic rear glass. If this is going to be a trail pig, I would go balls to the wall and not spend too much time on stupid RR issues. 35s on stock 16 wheels, 3-4 lift, toy conversion, etc.

These trucks are the cheapest solid axle truck you can buy and build. Parts are dirt cheap and they are everywhere. Lots of good aftermarket support and they work great in the snow when setup properly. Serious PITA to deal with for some stuff, especially the finicky crap.

This will be her daily driver, but she likes it rough and rowdy so chopped fenders and 33's would make her quite happy. As for the rear glass, as long as it seals up and keeps the water out, she wont care.

I somehow missed the part where you said this pile was for HER...

Bad idea. Giving your chick a rusted ass Michigan Range Rover is pretty much like giving her a 10 speed bike and bus fare for transportation. It's gonna leave her stranded and pissed off when the eleventy million corroded connections and fawked up gizmos fail. The windows will get stuck up or down as they see fit, the heater's gonna pack it in at -10, the doors will refuse to open, the viscous couplin in the T case will sieze making the truck slip and slide around like an old 240DL, the lights will stop working, the engine will die for random stupid reasons, it will piss oil all over everything everywhere, it will have random brake issues or the brakes will fail mysteriously, etc etc etc. This thing is like an old V12 Jag with 4wd. It's less reliable than a Skoda.

For a beater that you use for winter wheeling, where you just fix stuff with a hammer and bailing wire, it's a great truck, but for dependable transportation for your chick, a dead-been-sitting-a-year 1991 (worst year) Range Rover that's been in road salt for its entire life is the absolute worst pile of shit you could pick.

If she really wants a classic, part this one out (or just set it on fire), and get a clean one from out west, oil spray it every year and be a much happier man, but I'm telling you, this thing will drive you mad. She'll be pissed at you, you'll be pissed at it, and you're gonna dump thousands into it. I'm not saying you can't fix all this stuff, I am sure you could, but it's just not worth it.

THANK YOU!! Finally, someone who agrees with me about these shitboxes.

Cut the roof off and turn it into a crasher but don't put your girlfriend in it for a daily driver.

Here's what gonna happen: She'll be driving it to work one day and it'll die on the side of the road. Some good looking dick in a brand-new BMW will stop 'cause she's hot. She'll explain that her cheap-ass boyfriend makes her drive this piece of shit that keep breaking down on her. He'll see his chance and offer her a BMW of her own and you'll never see her again. Worse than that, you're still stuck with this pile of crap.

As I was reading this post, I began laughing maniacally. When I finally wa sable to breathe, I had to read it to AFIRover and ShopGrrrl...

ShopGrrrl said "what sort if transportation do you OWE to a GirlFriend? Marry her if you OWE her transportation. Then, burden her with a ten speed bike AND a POS Rover. Might even put a bike rack on the Rover."

Afi added "if in a warm state, add roller blades".

I was thinking that I've suffered through each and every one of those failures (and far too many more). For some reason, I still see the Range Rover Classic as being a handsome truck.

WHAT?

Overfuelling is sometimes due to failure of the coolant temp sender, it's the one on top of the intake with the injector plug on it.

Be aware that those trucks are very sensitive to weathering of the rotor and distributor cap/plugs and wires. Replace those parts before you try to get it going.

I'll definitely bring her with me when we come to get some parts, im going to put the heater on the truck this weekend and see if that helps it out any.

So far I've established;
fuel pump works
ignition system works
cylinders have compression
fuel injectors are working

I assume this is a timing chain driven engine, these dont have those plastic coated timing gears like the 80's GM's did? I ask because im thinking about the possibility of it being off timing.

Headlight switch. I might have one, those are very popular as they're easy to break off when entering or exiting the truck.

Are you saying the truck won't run? These trucks are known by some of us to eat camshafts for breakfast, lunch AND dinner. Worse on the earlier (distributor) engines due most likely to the worst crankcase venting system known to man. Pull the upper plenum and the left valve cover, run it up to TDC on compression and look to see what the valves are doing...

FWIW-I've only had one truck in more than five years of wrenching on Rovers that I even suspected of having jumped timing. In that same period of time, I have replaced several camshafts and gears/chains. They'll run forever with sloppy timing. It's a Rover, it likes to be beaten...

I have a head light switch, have gas door, turn signal switch is there but broken off, wiper switch is there, whatever im missing is on the right side of the column, nearest to the steering wheel. currently there is just a hole there lol

The cam shaft situation would be interesting, however if the camshaft was eaten up, the compression wouldn't be looking good. Same goes for the timing though. I'll go through and check every cylinder this weekend.

About the plastic covered gears though; i've dealt with some GM's with the plastic coated gears and the slop created can be a real bitch.

My check list was more of a "all these things are on par and the vehicle still isnt working properly" it's dumping more fuel than an arsonist. Unlike an arsonist however; this bitch wont burn it all and winds up choking itself out with a quickness.

It is very common for both the teeth to wear and the cams to wear. Replacing them both with aftermarket can do magic things to an old engine.

At the risk of attracting unwanted abuse, the only ISO standards I'm really intimate with are the 9000 and 14000 series and a few here and there that applied to a prior career path.

In the end, the only person who needs to be happy with the physique of his mate is that person's mate. It's all good!:flipoff2:

Yeah, thats why i originally asked about the timing gears. :D

if that switch is for the rear wiper, screw that. I've already bungee corded that thing shut and might put a hatch lock on it from a truck cap.

you need to check and see if the injectors are pulsing with a test light amp meter or timing light keep in mind that they are batch fire left and right bank. when i first got my trail truck the ecu was fried and they were firing 24-7 if the key was on. it can also be an engine ground situation.
