I have a 98 TJ dana 30 front with stock 4:10 gears. I can get a high pinion 30 out of a cherokee. The high pinion has 3:55 gears. Do I need new gears or can I use the ones from the low pinion? I believe I need gears and a carrier, is this right? I know the dana 30 is not the best axle but the axle cheap thanks to friends. Are cherokee and TJ front axles the same? Is the swap worth it just for a high pinion? Thanks all

I believe you are wrong. My TJ is low pinion.

Yes
Yes for the gears, you can use the same carrier
The mounting is the same
Yes, IMO...

The high pinion will bolt right in but double check your front drive shaft length and make sure its not gonna bottom out while sliding on the splines. Yes you will need to match your gears to the rear (4.10) but you cannot use the Low Pinion gears in the High Pinion axle, they are different.

Can I use the same carrier from the low to high pinion?

Yes you can use the same carrier, you just need new gears...if the one from the XJ is a vacuum disconnect then you're going to have to deal with that as well...Personally this swap is unnecessary as the low pinion D30 isn't much weaker than the high pinion variant. You'll get altering opinions to the contrary but the fact remains that if you're spending more than $100 on this swap it's a waste of time and money.

The benefit of a direct bolt-in HP is more than worth it in my opinion, and it's inexpensive. As long as it's not a vacuum disconnet...

Even if it is a vacuum disconect, just use the shafts out of your LP and make a simple block off plate and install a inner axle seal, the disconnect version uses a different seal. The HP axles use a reverse cut gears and the LP use a standard cut gears.

Does a hp have less deflection due to it riding on the coast side?

The reverse cut gearing of the HP is stronger than the LP due to riding on the proper side of the gear.
Another benefit of the HP if you have a lift is that the driveshaft is much less likely to get bent smaking into rocks, as it is tucked up higher than the TC skid.
I got mine for free and welded up a stout truss and control arm skids. With 30 spline chromo axles it's good for 35's... I'm testing it's limits with 36" TSLs on my rig this year, so we'll see how it hold up!
