: Ford 8.8 swap... limited slip?

Well I guess it’s no shocker that I broke a Dana 35. This weekend I’m going to head out to the local wreaking yard to walk around and see what I can find in the way of a Ford 8.8. My question is: Is there any way to see if a diff has the limited slip without having to pop the diff cover off?

Thanks,
JC

when you look at the axle tag, it will say the gear ratio with an "L" in it. 373 means 3.73. 3L73 means 3.73 with the trac-lock.

If its still in the rig, you can look at the codes on the drivers door sticker and get it there.

If you can turn the axles it's easy. Turn one axle and see which way the other side turns. If it goes the same direction it is limited slip, if it turns the oposite direction or only the pinion turns it is open. Of coarse there are variables that can jack this test up, so make sure everything is able to spin freely. If it won't turn, see if the trans is in park or in gear if a stick.

Screw the limited slip. buy an open diff, then add an Aussie locker.

Yeah… this is totally typical how things go for me… the more research I do the more I change my mind. I originally wanted to find a good deal on a complete limited slip diff. with 4.10 gears and then just re-gear my front end to match… well now I’m looking to also put in a Super 8.8 kit (does anybody know if that kit also corrects the 5/8 narrowing of the rear end?)… then I’ve decided I may want 4.56 and possibly an Ox Locker. So I guess I really only need the housing and the disc brakes.

Yeah it actually makes either side about 1" wider... Great kit. Recently installed one in my 8.8 with a Detroit.

Can't answer your super 8.8 question. However, that 5/8 inch is a non factor.

Anybody use the Aussie Locker on a daliy driver? My wife likes to zip around town with the jeep (she does not like driving the Ford Super Duty in and out of parking lots). Was wondering how it reacts to daily driving?

Thanks,
JC

If your wife is driving it, go selectable like the ox or arb. You don't want it doing anyting funky and have her crash it because she doesn't know what to do.

Its been a few years - but I am fairly certain I find a 4.10 with limited slip. Maybe a special order?
