: 1 Ton vs. 2.5 Ton: COST $$$$
1TonJeep 08-20-2002, 09:18 PM Before anyone gets their panties in a wad I know the D60 versus Rockwell thing has been debated many times on this site in terms of strength. My question is related to cost.
I have a new Dana 70 rear with detroit, 5.13, disks and a new GM Dana 60 front, detroit, 5.13, disks, 35 spline outers, warn premium hubs, high steer and 4 new 42" TSL's on 15x10 black rockcrawlers. Both full width, both with all new everything.
now for the question...
do you think I could get into a pair of Rockwells and 20" wheels with 48" XML's with necessary mounting and steering mods and driveshaft fab for what I could get out of my current set up.
I am considering the Rockwell route for a couple of reasons:
1. driveline angles
2. strength
3. rear steer
4. cost (my estimate, correct me if I'm wrong)
5. simplicity
Thanks for any input,
:D
elf_cruiser 08-20-2002, 09:24 PM NO, it will cost you prolly about $2k on top of what you could sell your stuff for.
But Rockwells are better, so i would choke up and GO FOR IT!
elf_cruiser 08-20-2002, 10:08 PM Daniel, you forgot driveshafts and suspension mods. Seriously, NO WAY can you do rockwells without spending some cash. BUT, if you want rear steer and big tires, rockwells are the only way to go.
jeeper111 08-20-2002, 10:40 PM no way can it be done for the same price but if you are even considering you should put the wheels in motion and get things rollin becasue if that thought has crept into your mind, it wont be long before it is strait up the only thing you will accept. Been there believe me. Oh and by the way, there is nothing cheap or easy about doing the suspension mods for rockwells, because as elf-loser will tell you, runnning leaf springs is not a permanent solution and as i can tell you, setting up coils or coilovers is expensive and time consuming!!!!!
elf_cruiser 08-20-2002, 10:44 PM HAHAHAHA!!! yup Jeeperbiatch! I have already bent 2 leafs wheelin hard here in AZ. Leaf springs and rockwells do not mix. The axles win the argument EVERY TIME. SO, you will need some kind of linked susp.
Good Luck!
JOHNS351C 08-21-2002, 11:23 AM Im with Daniel on this one. for the money you "should" get out of the axles you have I dont see any reason you couldn't upgrade to rockwells with out digging into you pockets anymore. I sell rockwell and big michelin's on the side when i can, and for the price of getting the BIG STUFF I dont know why people are still buying or at least paying as much as they do for the one ton stuff, when a rockwell or a mog axle is priced as reasonable as they are. I dont mean to rip on a 60 but for being the all famous "D60" I sure see them break alot. and as for having problems with springs, wont a simple torque link solve the problem, or a comlete four link, and just leave it on floating leaves. the materials needed to instal a linked suspension are not that expensive.
bigdude 08-21-2002, 12:31 PM If you can find someone who wants 1-ton axles you should be able to get ~$4K for the axles alone (maybe more through ebay).
I know it cost me $3500 for my 1-tons and that was with me building them. I still have 30 spline outers, but I have a HP60. Figure that cancels the other out and your axles are worth $4K to someone. I think I would've paid $4K for my axles already built. That extra $500 would've saved me a lot of work/time. Figure $1K+ for the tires/wheels. I just don't know why you'd change though, unless you really want rear steer and 48-53" tires. Seems like 42s would be plenty big and your set-up wouldn't break much.
YELLER BLAZER 08-21-2002, 12:46 PM I did it with 44" tsl's and custom bead lock wheels with money left over, didn't do rear stear but still did it with enough left over to do rear stear.
Anybody that says you can't get $4500+ dollars out of your stuff is smokin crack and not looking at what those items are bringing in the real world! in reality you should be able to get close to $6000 for everything, go price the parts you probably spent more than that building them!
elf_cruiser 08-21-2002, 12:54 PM the materials needed to instal a linked suspension are not that expensive.
they are if you do it right, and buy good stuff. The point is, 1ton jeep, do you already have a linked suspension?? If so, then you might be able to break even, if not then you will definitely be spending some $$ out of pocket. But I say, WTF, go for it man!!

What he said :D
welndmn 08-21-2002, 01:22 PM I think for his used stuff your ove quoteing him
for a 60 and a 70, i could see only 1500 bucks, but thats just me
Check with "Titanic" on the board here - he did that EXACT thing... Skip the armchair Q-backs, check with someone who HAS sold their 14/60 built combo and is knee deep in building his Rockwells... :)
