the benders are a nuesence, just use various size tubing or just use yoru hands. as for teh flaring tool just go to napa or kragen and buya double flare tool, they work fine! jiMMy

Rigid makes a good one... Bunghole has a Rigid I think and Dave that you met has one too.

You can hand bend them, but the key is not to kink the lines, I typically use both hand bends and bender. I have both the autoparts special, which is a two handle job and a single handle thing. Both have there uses..

I just got done redoing my front lines off the master and theres some bends in there that I could not have done by hand.

Ridgid makes a good lever bender and a good double flare kit also.
Yellow Jacket makes a bender that will do 1/4, 5/16 and 3/8

BTW I have benders from 1/4 od to 5/8 od

I'll second that - or is it a third now? Got their bender and double flare tools; work awesome. A bit more cash but well worth it.

The last thing you need is a bender. I have run all new brake lines on two toyota trucks and NEVER have used a bender. Now a flare tool would have been nice. I just used the premade lines though.

Bender would be more toruble than its worth to me.

Sometimes I use a bender and sometimes just shape it around a piece of scrap tube.

In a single flare, the end of the tube is at the big end of the flare. In a double flare, the end of the tube is pressed back to the small end of the flare, and the flared section is double-wall with a folded seal at the big end.

I used to cut & double flare all my lines when I did'em, but after years of doing it I realized it was a pain in the ass, and now I just get pre-made lengths of brake line a little longer than what I'm going to need and take up the slack over the length of the line.
As far as bending I use a bender & my hands split about 50/50.

I tried flaring the NAPA lines, but I had a Hell of a time getting a good flare. I tried the Snap-On tool and others, and had leaks nearly every time. Maybe I'm just a fawking moron or maybe the NAPA lines are too hard, I dunno.

Speaking of flares: :D

Do you have the 458R, the 345, or the hammer type?

For the 458R or the 345, just stick twice as much tube as you need for the flare through the clamp bars, tighten them, and run the cone down on it. For the hammer type... that should be pretty self-explanatory.

judging by the pics and descriptions i have the 345. if i just stick twice as much tube out, wont it just spread it open til it splits?

You need the double flare bits. What they do is press down in the center so it mushrooms, and forms the outside of the flare. Then you take the 45 degree but and fold in the rest, ie a double wall flare.

Nope - don't ream the inside of the tube, and with the extra material exposed instead of the cone flaring the END of the tube, it'll push it down and swell the middle of the section between the cone and the clamp bars. This is how the double flare can be formed with any cone-type tool. Try it on some scrap tube to get a feel for how much to stick out; you'll see what I mean. The special double-flare bits are nice, but unnecessary.

Vova, the springs work just fine for bending. You could go to a hobby shop that sells RC stuff and you should be able to pick up a package of various sizes for cheep. If not, then take a piece of tube to like Ace Hardware of something, and find a spring that fits snug over the line that is a few inches long. Be careful with the 3/16 flare adapter, the nipple tends to bust off easy if it gets pinched in the tube....
