If you are looking for an external pump and not an in-tank pump, then the frame rail mounted electric pumps from an injected F250 work very well with the GM TBI setups. They have a nice mounting bracket and are cheap and plentiful in the bone yards. I grabbed 3 of them from the bone yard in about 30 mintues and paid about $25 for all 3.

Is the parts store quoting you the price with a complete sender? The Carter 74000 and Airtex E3902 both should cost you under $60 and probably closer to $50. The pump is replaceable separate of the sending unit and clearly the sending unit isn't your problem since you're eying up an external setup.
