6000#'s? more?

For most things a 6000# should be enough.

I'm running an M8000 myself though. The M8000 is typically only about $30-40 more than the M6000. For the small savings you would get, it's nicer to have that extra 2000# capacity.

I have heard that the rule of thumb is 1 and 1/2 times the weight of your vehicle. That doesn't seem like enough because it would only be 3000 lbs for a Sammy.
If you have a 6000 lb it should be plenty. One thing to remember is you may be pulling other vehicles out too.
If you care about that you would have to take their weight in to consideration also.

Through my experience, when you have a winch, you tend to do lotsa vehicle recovery. I'd get one that you feel could get your buddies unstuck, ie: Jeeps, Toys, etc. :D

If I use my xd9000i on my sammy and use it to pull someone else out, it will probably tear away at my frame. If it is a heavy pull that is. With that said, I want to find the right weight winch that will not damage the frame and yet still pull myself and others out.

What makes you think it will tear your frame away. I have pulled myself and other vehicles so hard the cable has broken on a 9500 lb winch.
You're not gonna hurt your frame if you mount your winch correctly.

I have a 9000lb Warn and winched this thing up a big ugly hill w/ ledges and survived.

How are people w/o welded on frame extensions attaching their winch bumpers? Seems tlike the four factory holes would not be strong enough, but I've heard the ARB only uses these holes. Lets see some pics.

I've got the Canyon State YJ setup with a Wheeler's winch bumper.

The CSC setup runs a bolt through the original shackle mount and to the original 4 frame end bolts.

The Wheeler's bumper also uses those 4 frame end bolts. There is also a tube run through the round frame crossmember and then the bumper has a bracket that has ubolts around the tube.

The bumper itself now has 8 bolts (4 go into the CSC bracket and 4 go through the frame and the CSC bracket) and 2 ubolts holding it on.

Here's some pics.

Buy a good 8000+. Yes it's overkill, but if you ever plan on doing any hard core stuff, it's necessary. There are several major trails that require winching out over a waterfall. Yes, a 5K or 6K "should" do it, but will your battery last long enough? Can it break you over at the top when the angle is VERY bad? What happens if you burn it up half way? All questions you don't want to face dangling from a little piece of wire..

A quick 8K on a Sami will get you up and over safely and quickly! Yes, it can tear your truck up if used incorrectly. So be carefull, and be safe..... :)

I'd reccomend:
X8000i
HS9500
or the ever awesome 8274 :D

Think fast! You'll never regret it....

I've got a cheapie Ramsey REP8000 - it's worked well for they type of 'wheeling I do. I don't tend to play in the mud, however.

When I got my Warn 8274, the phone never stopped ringing all night. People called me at 4am to get them unstuck from everywhere.

Now this is what I do to keep from having to get up all the time.

I got the winch on a removable cradle and when people ask me if it works I just tell them I'm trying to counter the weight of my back bumper and the winch has never worked.....no more calls at night.

8000lbs is overkill but my friend had a 6000 and he fried it and had to walk about 10km's to the road....its better safe than sorry

We roasted a 6,000lb winch way back when in Surprise Canyon (probably 94 or 95)...... all my Zuks have 8 or 9k winches now. Never had a lick up trouble since.

Keep in mind that you might need to pull some heavy ass buddy of your up our out of something and that pull might exceed a smaller winch capacity. There's been several times where I've had to latch onto a tree or rock and pull some full size rig out of some predicament.

Go big.... no worries.

I run a 6000 on the rear and an 8000 on the front.

I only have the 6 because I never buy a new winch ang get good deals on used ones .

Why buy a 6 when and 8 is the same weight. Unless you are getting a smoking good deal on the 6 , go big or go home. Its worth spending the little extra :)

personally I got a warn 6000 (hopefully will have it mounted up by this weekend). Biggest reason though was price (a quiklok for a yota :D). Get what ya can get, if you can find a cheap 6000lbs wench its better then nothing

6000 on a sammi is more than enough, just go with a winch company youy have heard of, not one from Eds house of winches. I tosted a tranny one night in a river and used my Warn 6000 to pull me over a mile, still got it, no problems

Why go with a 6000 when the 8000 is the same thing only re-geared? I guess this also depends on what trails you do and how big your Sami is. If you do lots of mud and your rig weighs 3800 lbs, then a 6000 won't do the trick.

i went with a 6k on the buggy for line speed, it you look at the warn specs for them, it damn near as fast as a 8274 at a 2k# pull. but it would not be that great for pulling out stuck friends. and mine came up cheap. i have a 8274 but i don't think i would ever put it on my zuk. mike

I had a ramsey rep 5000 for awhile and it worked OK but was slow. Used a snatch allot and it did fine.

I just bought a warn m8000 and going to mount it tonight and maybe Ill get to use it this weekend in the black Hills. :)
