: Cage mount bushing?
RockJeep 08-21-2002, 02:55 PM Well this weekend i'm going to try and tie the cage into the frame but need a bushing between the cage and the frame tie ins. I need a flat sheet style of bushing that i can drill holes for the bolt to pass through in. I'd like to use a polyurethane or equivalent type of material. does anyone know where i can get it in a flat type form? Also if there is no such thing do you think some Thick rubber will work?
thanks
bob
p.s. the bushing will be 3"x3"x"whatever thickness i can find"
RockRover 08-21-2002, 03:00 PM Don't know...My cage ties straight onto my frame.
How about a poly engine mount?
Just a thought.

Travis Waldher 08-21-2002, 03:06 PM What about poly body mounts?
geargrinder 08-21-2002, 04:12 PM Try online metals, they have delrin bushing material in plate, sheet and round.

1BDYJ 08-21-2002, 06:26 PM Try Ford radius arm bushings....any year will work.
I use these to replace my AA motor mounts and they last alot longer!!
EasyXJ 08-21-2002, 06:48 PM Your local machine shop can order any kind of poly you want. Make sure you put that crap in the freezer before you cut/drill it, that makes it 100% easier to work with.

hehehehe ;)
A buddy over at www.metalfusionfab.com did that when he built the custom cage in his Scrambler... Not sure what the bushings are from though, sorry :(
70~K5 08-21-2002, 08:09 PM Get some Jeep/ chevy/ whatever 1.5 od poly bushing and some 1.5 ID tubing to put them in.
I'm using Poly Leaf spring bushings. I think the 85 Blazer has a package with 8 at 1.5".
RockJeep 08-21-2002, 08:52 PM thanks for the ideas. gonna try www.onlinemetals.com i can't use a round bushing in tube like the drm pics. gotta have a flat bushing
thanks

they sell 'em for $10 each with bolt and sleeve. They look like the pics David posted.
nasvik 08-22-2002, 07:34 AM I picked up some rubber sheet from Orchard Supply Hardware for my rear tie ins. 1/2" thick, and they cut it to the size I need.
Problem with the rubber is it's hard to keep the bolts tight.

StinkBug 08-22-2002, 09:25 AM I'm having a hard time understanding why you would need a bushing for the cage. Why not just mount directly to the frame.

Frame flex
Slagburn 08-22-2002, 09:43 AM Virtually every other form of motorsports that installs cages welds them directly to the body/ frame structure, just not us in general?
Anybody seen fatigue failures from welding a cage directly to a flexy 4x4 frame?
I think I'm gonna skip the bushings and go direct...
StinkBug 08-22-2002, 12:15 PM see if jeep built their frames like Isuzu does you wouldn't have to worry about frame flex, or steering box mounts, or ......
ok i'm runnin and ducking now :flipoff2:

RockJeep 08-22-2002, 12:32 PM I went to the hardware store today and found some 1/4" rubber sheet that'll stack to make my bushings.
thanks

yeah, frame flex sucks...
built it tight, get suspension
Bobby,
Why not save yourself some mula and cut some sidewalls out of some tires?? Either that or quit being a pus and just weld those fawkers on there!:D
xj4rocks 08-22-2002, 12:58 PM For what it's worth MSC has a bunch of different plastics in sheet and various other forms. Has sheets of polyurethane in various thicknesses.

What I've seen locally with several guys is tears in the floor pan due to the frame and body flexing differently. One guy with a TJ had a real bad problem with that a couple years ago.

They do not bolt the cage to the body and then the body to the frame. It's built as 1 piece.
