i just blew the head gasket on my 85 720. anyone know any good tips for removing the head without dicking up the timing chains position? i heard you can do it without removing the timing chain cover but idk.

you need a wood wedge to stick down between the chain to keep the tensioner from coming out of its hole.

Turn the beast to TDC, it doesn't really matter which one, but compression is best. Then, during the proceedure, do not turn the motor....use some mechanics wire (bailing wire) and wire the chain to the gear, in at least two spots (through the holes in the gear) and note where the marks are on the gear...and make sure it is in the smae place when you put it back.

also there's a sequence in removing the bolts., would be a good time to check the valves/seals, cam, timing chain components, especially the tensioner.

nice 720 btw, I miss mine. This engine is really easy to convert to propane...:smokin:

get a haynes or chilton manual for it, both describe how to do it the way you want.
