: YJ tach issue

Hi everyone -

Picked up my first Jeep last month and have started to do some work on it. I've been inside and out both a Samurai and Chevy K10, but this is my first Jeep.

Anyhow, my tach isn't working. Can someone give me a quick basic rundown of the wiring and ignition on a Jeep? Is the coil seperate from the distributor on a 2.5 4 banger? If so, where does the tach wire get the signal from? I'm gonna try and troubleshoot it tonight.

Thanks,

- Steve

What year? There were 2 different ignition systems on the YJs over the years.

Sorry about that. It's an '89.

Here are some pics of the coil.

Two things that I notice right off -

1) The middle plug looks like it's missing a wire on the top half.
2) It looks like a plug is completely missing from the top.

I don't see any loose wires or plugs, so I can only guess as to what should be in these spots. Anyone have any insight?

Welcome to the world of Heeps. This guy has done a conversion on his '87 to a CJ dash, but there is a lot of wiring talk in there. Maybe you can find a diagram in his thread:

Hope this helps! Gig 'em!
