: some newb questions
greenbomb 01-26-2009, 06:13 PM i've seen some badass trucks on here and it is giving me ideas for my 78 ford.
i saw a ford like mine that had D-link lookin things.. i think they were farm shackles.. on the underside of the front bumper... any idea how i would go about putting a set of these on my rig?
and what about under the back bumper?
right now i have tow hooks under the front bumper but i think the farm shackles would not only look better but be more functional. also.. i cant seem to find any HD front/rear bumpers for my 78 ford f150. are the ones that i am seeing on here custom fabbed or is there a place that sells them that i havent seen? im talking about the tubular looking ones and the ones that look like they are made from steel.
thanks guys.. and sorry i had some dumb q's but at least they are in the newb section!
cslimfu 01-26-2009, 07:30 PM you can buy some that you weld on at most truck (semi)supply stores. they will not be the best for under bumper cause they will rip it off.
loveshackle 01-26-2009, 10:14 PM Anything like farm shackles, as you call them, want to be mounted directly to the frame, not the bumper. Find a good welder & have them mount 'em.
I use a protofab front bumper, www.protofab4x4.com, on my Bronco, but there are more out there, depending on your needs.
Best advice is to search & read, search & read.
greenbomb 01-26-2009, 10:41 PM well i figured they would be mounted to the frame, but what part of the shackle do i weld to the frame?
or do i need an eyelet of some sort welded to the frame so that i can unscrew the shackle and put it in the eyelet?
im not talkin about the d-links that you weld on im talkin more like this:

Good luck. I'm out.
jtlb150 01-26-2009, 11:15 PM hey greebomb if you look at the pic i have a mount just under the bumper that i plan to add those tow points to, i am also going to build a bumper off of that since the previous owner built it thick.

greenbomb 01-26-2009, 11:44 PM thanks guys.. and sorry i forgot about the search function lol
and jtlb i like your truck man what all are you plannin on doin to it?
jtlb150 01-27-2009, 10:06 AM well right now its stock but im lining up a set of 35" boggers, as soon as i get the wiring fixed im going to drive it to a friends and do a shackle flip and some 4"lift coils up front depending on how high the flip puts me. eventually i want to throw some d60s under it but for now the d44 and 9" should work.
i want to extend and wrist the front radius arms but thats will probly wait tell i get everything thing else done how i like it.
there isnt much for rocks here and i dont like mud so it will probly be used for trail running until i take it out to wyoming.
my truck is a 77 f150 shortbed with the 400/c6/np205 drive train and its got 33" bfg all terrains right now.
greenbomb 01-27-2009, 02:04 PM sounds like you have some good plans tho.
mine is a 78 f150 longbed with 351m engine. 31" somethings for tires.. i dont think they all match. got the truck for free from my uncle, so i cant complain.
plans include a 6" lift, start out with 35" cepek mud country's. i want to put the front bumper on it that i was talkin about, but idk if i want a steel plate-made one or a tubular bumper, i will figure it out later lol and i plan on puttin d60's under it too, and i am under the impression both of my axles are d44's right now, but im thinking thats wrong. i will have to do some checking. im also planning on doing some little stuff like lights on the bumper i end up getting and stuff like that.. maybe a winch. i would like to eventually upgrade to 40" boggers, cause i like the mud :), but i want to make sure i can handle the 35's first, this being my first rig.
cslimfu 01-27-2009, 10:15 PM i am a bubba army member since 07. got those flaps on the back of my log truck. sorry, had to mark out!! FLTE full log trucker effect
jtlb150 01-27-2009, 10:21 PM your rear axle should be a 9" i dont think ford ever used d44s in the back.
i want to build my bumpers out of plate steel so i can mount a winch but it will have tube to protect the grille since it is one of my favorite parts of these trucks.
our engines are almost the same, mines just got more stroke than the 351, when you go to find performance parts google ford aussie heads that is probly the first upgrade i will do performance wise.
ill probly play in the mud but i hate cleaning it up lol. im going to try and build this truck on 35 or larger tires with as minimal lift as possible and i want it to flex pretty good, i figure i can fit 35s with minor trimming and no lift since the 33s fit with out one.
