: School me on Fals / FNC (AKs Too)
Jason R 01-26-2009, 11:13 PM I'd like to pick up a Fal at some point, with folding stock. What's the deal with them? What should I avoid, and what should I look for?
I like the FNC, but I don't know if I need another 5.56 rifle. They're kind of neat. Good rifles?
I basically have the same question with AKs. I'd like to pick up a couple of AK-47s in 7.62 and AK-74s (5.45s). What should I look for, and what should I avoid?
Both Fals and AKs seem to be built in the states. Should I not buy a home-built gun?
YellowIH 01-27-2009, 06:31 AM FAL:
Doc and Aloharover have tons on here in multiple posts.
DS Arms website talks all about FAL's. As much as you could want to know there.
AK's can be build easily as home....everyone's doing it.
I understand you can get a stamped or milled receiver ak....milled is considered "better", but I doubt I shoot enough to know.
I am still asleep...if it makes no sense then SEARCH!
EDIT:
Yeah the PARA models have the folding stock and have specific misc parts. The DSA scope mount for a PARA will fit on the regular models, but not vice-versa due to the "rat tail" for the bolt mech.
Maybe you live close enough to someone so you can see one and figure it out. I have never saw an FAL for sale here locally in a store. Most people have no clue what they are.
FlexCJ5 01-27-2009, 07:17 AM Schmozilla and I just finished my FAL build. It can be done with simple hand tools and a lot of strength to tighten the barrel on the receiver. After cleaning and checking the kit, getting the receiver from pete, assembly took all of 45 minutes.
I dont know about a folding stock though as the recoil spring sits in all the way back inside the stock.
AK's are the same way, I've bought a few and built one now. You can do almost anything you want with those rifles.
animator 01-27-2009, 08:38 AM If you want an FAL with a folding stock, you'll want to look for a para model. The bolt carrier will be different, as will other misc parts.

Was that the kit you got from me? Do you have any pics? I'd like to see how it turned out.

yep it is. ill take some pics.
Jason R 01-29-2009, 05:04 PM I guess I'm trying to figer out what to look for. From the research I've done, it looks like Bulgarians are one of the nicest AKs, with Romanians being the second?
DMGunn 01-29-2009, 07:13 PM I think the Chinese AKs are by far the best (unlike everything else they make). As far as FALs go, as long as you avoid the Century/Hesse ones, you will do great. The Imbel rifles aren't as pretty as the DSAs, but they use contract receivers, and are great quality. Good luck finding one, though. Be warned, you will not be able to talk yourself into selling a good FAL under any circumstances, and an AR will feel like a flimsy POS by comparison. FNC? I love the way they look, but I have never even seen one in person.

He speaks the truth. I traded my Poly M14S (after I had wanted one forever) and kept my FAL because I can only afford to feed one of them. My fal is build on one of the older DCI receivers. These receivers are great, but now very hard to find.

hesse yes, I can't always repair those. centurys I have made into some sweet guns. They just require some extra "love" I actually sold an Imbel and kept the Century as that gun likes me :D

X infinity!

or do like I did and get an ACE block and stock and a para bolt carrier/dustcover/springs and have a ghetto para
Jason R 01-29-2009, 08:28 PM So what should I expect to pay for DSA Fal Paratrooper, and where can I find one?
There appears to be a FN Fal Paratrooper (not DSA/whatever) on Gunbroker. Worth the price?
If what you guys are saying is true, it might not be my first Fal. I really like the FNC too. :)

Arm and a leg.
I bought a DSA mid length pimped out one for $2200.00 and thought it was a great deal.
Bought a PARA model one for $1300.00 and know that it was worth it...its the tits.
Have a $680.00 Century build. It shoots GREAT. Bought it from McMann.
I really wanted a SOCOM 16, but after messing with the FAL's I am sticking with them. They are awesome.
Times eleventy billion....once you get one it will be hard to part with it...
FlexCJ5 01-29-2009, 09:37 PM build it. much cheaper
