well ive been reading as much as i can find and i still have mixed feelings about the dana 60 rear, right now its just a 30 spline dana 60, but i want to bore the spindles and change out the carrier for a spool and put in some 35 spline axles, but wondering if it will be enough for the jeep buggy(its a 1/2 frame jeep buggy).

can a 35 spline dana 60 rear be built strong enough to hold up without issues?

the truck will be set up with a stock ish 5.0l out of a 95 mustang, c6 auto, atlas 4.3:1, 4.88 gears hp king pin 60 front and some 39.5 tsl's. i dont want to have to worry about the rear end blowing up, it will be driven hard from time to time.

please tell me the pros and cons of going this route, the truck build will start end of the week and i need to make my decision asap.

i would opt for a 70 but my reason for thinking about the 60 is i allready have the disc brake 60, 4.88 gears, complete rebuild kit(parts still in boxes) only thing i need is to bore the spindles and weld on the truss and link mounts.

cheers

if you are worried just go with a set of 40 spline axles. there are going to be a ton of people that are going to say they broke 60's. i have been on the same set of 35 splines for 2 years with 42's.

im worried about the R&P more than anything, an axle broken is nothing to fix, and ill always have a spare.

is the r&p a big deal on the 60 if properly set up?

if you are worried, then go with a 14 bolt

Personally i do not see a whole heck of a lot of broken LP 60 ring gears. But that's just me!

Less than 4000# you could be OK. More than that with the 4:1 trans case and you will wish you had the 70.

Ive been runing a rear 60 1.5 years with 5:13, and an atlas 10:1, Alloy USA 35 spline semi float shafts and 39's to 42's. Its in a jeep that weighs about 4400. I regularly beat the shit out of it, and knock wood, havent had any major issues. The only problem I have had was with the semi float axles. When side hit hard, or dancing on 1-2 wheels the hat of the axle would bend, causing the rotor to push the caliper piston in. Alloy (when the were still around) always warrantied it with no questions but was a pain in the ass. I have recently swiched to a full float set up with Longfield 300m rear axles and drive flanges and havent had problems since.

With the parts you already have, I'd run it with 35 spline. I would not use the 30 pline, they seem to break kinda soon on our other jeep. IMHO.

a lot of guys around here run 35 spline rear 60s including myself. From heavy YJs with 4:1 t cases, to 5.0 powered buggys. One broken shaft, and one twisted, zero broken ring and pinions. One thing to keep in mind is anything lower than a 5.38 tends to break more offten, not just because of the pinion head size, but also the smaller and thinner ring gear teeth. I think it would last for ya.

Just put a stock 14 bolt ff in and call it a day...

I would agree completely if he didn't already have coin in the 60. A 35 spline 60 is extremely strong.

Its hilarious! 5 years ago you weren't a true "hardcore" wheeler if you didn't have 60's! Every time you opened up Pirate all you heard was 60's, 60's, 60's.

When did 60's become passe? Hell guess I gotta go scrap my axles and get some rockwells or something! My wife's gonna be pissed!:flipoff2::flipoff2:

Just run it.. You guys are splitting hairs. I'm going with a 14 bolt because the price for parts are cheaper. But if I had a 60 here... I would use it without hesitation. The 14 bolts have 3 pinion bearings vs. Only 2 on a 60. Have your gears set up professionally and wheel it.

35 spline d60 is enough for 95% of the wheelers here.

Run it.

If you blow it up, which I doubt you will easily, then 14b's are abundant and cheap. I run a rear 60 with 35 splines and a spool, and I love it. Thrashed the piss out of it as well with no issues thus far.

I'm running a d60 with d70 outters. I flog it time to time with stickies, and i have yet to break a shaft. Could be the 2.5L tho! :D

I'd do the 14 bolt (cheap axle, easy to build, easy to vary width, cheap lockers, strong-as-hell - did I mention strong-as-hell?). I have a 14b in my trail rig and I'm building another 14b to transplant into my DD. If you don't like the low clearance of the 14b...shave that BITCH :flipoff2:

Here's the thread of my shaved 14b (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=753139)

However, what everyone said about the 60...it's true too...plenty strong.
