I wheeled with the MIOBI boys a couple times, years ago, at 600 Acres (by Iowa City) when it was open. Seemed like there were two different crews. The larger- good bunch of guys. The smaller- trail disrespecting assholes.... I had a real problem with the way they were tearing up the place.

I think that you will find out that any club you belong to has those types of people. So please don’t bash MIOBI because of a few bad eggs this club has really changed a lot I think. I am a new member of the club just about year and half and really enjoy the people of the club and the people that i wheel with.

I disagree. I was a member of the Stump jumpers a couple of years ago, with the exception of being somewhat unreliable, every member I met was great to wheel with.

I wheeled with many clubs over the years, at 600 Acres and elsewhere. I can't remember every being as pissed off at a few idiots as those few from MIOBI. As I said, MOST of the guys were cool. It only takes a couple assholes to ruin it for us all. Things do change, maybe those few individuals have gotten a clue by now, it has been several years.

And for the record, I wasn't bashing MIOBI, simply stating what I saw. Sounds like you found people you can hang with, good for you. Maybe when I get the buggy done, I'll check the club out....

I have been a member of MIOBI since 2000, and before I was a member, was fairly close to the club due to a lot of mutual membership with my former club.

I wont absolutely say that MIOBI never had an "official" outing at 600 acres, but I don't ever recall there being one- maybe the people that you wheeled with was another club that happened to have some members with multiple club affiliations?? Irregardless, thats no excuse if they were being trail-asses.

For whatever its worth, I will admit that there were a lot of early members of MIOBI that one could say were "unpolished??"

OR, maybe they should actually tell new people that when the departure time listed says 11:00 am- 12:00 pm at the meeting place, they REALLY mean "We're leaving at 11, unless we decide to leave later"

And then there are the scheduled outings no one shows up to...

Still a great bunch of guys, and I would still recommend them. Great private wheeling areas too.

I have no idea if their outing was "official" or not, the few people I talked to said their group was MIOBI. It's entirely possible that they misled us. The main "offender" drove a well set up ford Ranger. Red, four link, 40"-44" swampers (IIRC). That thing would go anywhere, straight up every hill and tree he pointed it at.

Extended cab?? If so, that MIGHT be a guy from up around the Waterloo area. His is the only red ranger that I know of that used to fit that description. Can't say one way or the other if he is currently, or ever was a member of ours, but he and some others occasionally come down to our "home" stomping grounds.

They had no regard for the trail system. That Ranger would go up any hill and over any tree he could find. Then his buddies (I think there were three of them)would try to follow, usually tearing up the ground pretty bad. I realize 600 acres didn't have any difficult obstacles for a well built truck, but that 's no reason to make your own. I had gone there for over 20 years and have never seen that kind of bad behavior.

trail system? what trail system? I had no idea there was any "trails" there. it was just one big mud pit. only rules i was aware of was stay within the boarders, and stay out of the water. the paths that were their were so lame, a stock samurai could go anywhere and everywhere.

I guess that makes it OK then...:shaking::shaking: That was one of the reasons the "boarders" kept shrinking. Asshats like the guy I'm talking about, and apparently you, dissrespecting the land we have been given to play on. It was called 600 Acres because that's how much land was there originally. They kept pulling in the fences because they couldn't keep people from being stupid. When it closed to trucks there were only about 140 acres accessible.

The only mud "pits" were up by the parking lot, there were some mud holes on the trails. Maybe you never made it back that far....

there were mud holes all over the park. the majority of the really deep ones were near the parking lot, but there were some really deep ones scattered throughout the park. After a bit of rain, it was one big mud pit. i don't know how else you would describe it.

the closure of the park to trucks was alot more complex then due to due a few trucks "tearing it up". might have something to do with the atv clubs being better organized, and more interested in the park.

if the DNR would have patrolled the area then, like they are doing now, alot of the so called "tearing it up" could have been prevented. they now keep a very close eye on anyone out there.

So in rereading this, your main complaint was that this ranger was making his own "trails". I am sorry, I did not know that it was unacceptable to "make your own trails".

Seriously, there really were not any specific trails in that park. Their were what one might call well traveled areas that went all over the place, most of the time interconnecting with one another, but anything closely resembling a trail, there was not.

True, the closure to trucks had little to do with tearing up the park. The park shrinking had everything to do with it(along with those that dumped trash out there). From what I understand, the park was offered to the Trail Hogs, a local 4x4 club to manage. They didn't want to take the responsibility. The atv club was more than happy to take it over. The first thing they did was put up the NO TRUCKS signs. It really made no sense, all they ever did when we were there is follow us around and watch us try to roll our shit....

the amin fastor that closed so much of 600 acres was complaints of the noise from the golf course and the subdivisions that built up on the back side of 600 acres. they lobbies hard and when the state got control of the land from the federal gov't they sold off the land to the south piece by pice to make them happy. then on top of it was the dumping of trash and junk vehicles in the park. the single biggest problem was not enough people who wheeled there bothered to fight the closings and sale of land. i went there for years, and i too am a member of miobi. i started going to miobi about 3 years before 600 acres closed. the tow company i managed was also the only tow company that would go into the park to recover vehicles as we had the only 4 wheel drive wrecker in the area. but there were no set trails. there were heavier traveled areas, but no set trails. and the dnr always patrolled the area. granted not as heavily as now, but they were always there. the main rule was no alcohol, and keep it safe, and keep trucks off the motocross track they had there. alot didn't, but those were all posted on the original signs in the parking lot

highstrungbronco
02-08-2009, 09:20 AM
and i'll have to dig, but anyone can look up the sale of the land on the johnson county iowa assessors web site. and i remember there being articles explaining why it was closed and parts sold off in the iowa city press citizen and the cedar rapids gazette back then.
but bottom line, the reason it closed is the same as so many orv parks across the country. those against off roading were better organized, better funded, and more motivated to get us out than those of us that wheeled. that along with those that didn't take care of the park, that just left trash and debris behind, etc. doomed the park to closure for us all with our trucks.
it was never any one factor or group of people. it was a cumulative effort and consequence of many things. but the main factor was the complaints of noise that got the ball rolling and everything else just kept it going

Oh and about 600 acres...and wheeling in Iowa in general

The only reason we used to be able to wheel there is because it was managed and controlled by the Army Corps of Engineers, NOT the DNR. The Army would have training exercises there and when that was happening no one was allowed on the land. Otherwise they pretty much gave all vehicles free reign of the place. The Corps, for what ever reason, quit using this area and it's in control of the DNR now. The DNR is full of hateraid for full size rigs and thus we are not allowed. I am pretty sure that this land was not offered up to the Trail Hogs as I was a member of the Trail Hogs and I don't recall hearing of this.

People, we have no public place to wheel IN THIS STATE!! NO WHERE!

There is an association called the Iowa Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs that has been trying to work with the DNR, local, and state governments to get wheeling access to full size rigs. I would recommend to any person living in this state to join a club involved with the Iowa Association and get involved. Ask questions and educate yourself about the situation. Now that we have a new director of the DNR and a new governor there is renewed hope and more opportunity to get our side of the story heard.

Search for the IA association, join a club involved with the IA association and get involved. Hell go form your own club and join the association.

Dude, stop being a pussy. I told you what I was told by someone who talked to a DNR officer. I didn't say it was true, as I said, I wasn't there. Maybe the officer was wrong, maybe you are. I don't give a shit either way. All I do know for certain is that 600 acres is closed to trucks and that really sucks. Even if it wasn't exactly hard core, it was close and I have had a lot of fun there in the last 25 years or so. As you said, we now have no public place to play in the state of Iowa. I totally agree with you that we all need to get together and do something about it.

big85blazer is right. the corps of engineers ran the land at 600 acres until the government signed it over to the state. at which point the dnr took it over. it was also around this time that everything started going downhill. once the state had control they could do with it as they saw fit. and he's also right about it being closed during drill weekends back then too. maybe your buddy got lucky, but they didn't allow you to run in there when they were in there. it was probably a right place right time thing. but above all else now it doesn't really matter. there isn't enough space left to bother with fullsize rigs anymore anyway. and i sincerely hope we do get a public orv park in iowa, but i'm not getting my hopes up. and lastly i wholeheartedly agree on everyone get into a club, hell, get into as many as you can. and we all make our voices heard. that is the only way we will ever get what we want and deserve.

I knew the Army Corps of Engineers used to control the place, I didn't know that they officially turned it over to the DNR before it was closed to us.

I used to talk to the DNR officers when they would stop by. They used to ask us if there were any stuck vehicles (or abandoned ones) back there because they didn't want to go back there themselves.

Sorry I was just trying to set a few facts straight and show any Iowan's reading this that the DNR is really our biggest challenge, and to point out that we have no public place to wheel. Which is pretty pathetic really when we have abandoned quarries and strip mines that are perfect for what we do, rotting away until the State reclaims them and we can't even take piss on a tree there without getting arrested. For some reason the old administration just didn't want to do anything for us. Now with the economy in ruins I personally feel we are fucked. Our only hope will be private land owners who allow us to recreate on their property. Hopefully I am wrong.

I'll go drink bleach, gargle razor blades and stop being a pussy. Proceed to represent the states off road community in this posting without further input from me.

See you guys on the trails! Too bad it will have to be in another state.

Don't you dare drink bleach, we need all the informed wheelers out there we can get! Now go join a local club or two and maybe we'll see you on the private trails in Iowa....

SW Iowa, Lenox now to be exact. I'm finally home, to stay. I've wheeled at MIOBI, haven't become a member, because I don't want to be a member of a club that I can't be a good member to. Meaning, I really don't have time to come out and help with trail clean up, can't make it to monthly meetings and such. I lived within 60 miles of the place for 5 years, and made it there 3 times. With a growing family, growing farm, and animals to take care of, I don't have alot of free time. Now I live about 2 hr drive from there.

I used to wheel at 600 acres when it allowed trucks. I've also wheeled in Dresser Wisconsin on Memorial Day weekend. I run with the boys from Waterloo, the above said red ranger is an awesome trail rig. I've never known the owner to be disrespectful, he has always been humble and decent anytime I've been around him. He is a good friend of mine, and always willing to help. One time that red ranger pulled my brothers dead dodge back to camp through the trails at Dresser. That big old Ford really sings.

I can see how his running off the trails can be perceved as "disrespectful" from an outsiders view. However, 600 acres was a land with no rules. When we go to Dresser, it has marked trails, and the red ranger stays on them. I wheel anywere with the boys from Waterloo. Even though I don't get to see them often, I'm always invited on their trips, and go when I can. I know that when I get on the trail with them, they will make sure all of us gets home, no matter what. Sorry for the rambling, just had to stick up for a friend.

I do see I will have to look into wheeling at Harlan, that's not that far from me.

This will be my last post on this particular subject.

He may be the greatest person in the world, and yes he has a nice rig. I was commenting on some bad behavior that I witnessed. Any time I see a person or a group acting in this fashion I will call them out on it. I don't care what the rules are or aren't in the park. Whether you call them "trails", paths, or fucking roads I don't care. Whatever you call them it is UNACCEPTABLE to EVER drive through the woods and over trees like he was doing. We all need to follow the Tread Lightly philosophy. Not doing so could possibly mean an end to our sport. I for one refuse to stand by and let others ruin it for me.

I'll get off of my soapbox now....

Unfortunatly, no. Last year my wife and I built a new house, and I need to finish up the landscaping when the ground thaws. I've got my trail rig tore apart now, plus a multitude of other things that I need to accomplish this spring that take priority over playing. It will be late summer at the earliest before I get to go wheeling.

10-4, you have an opinion, you told your side of the story, and I've told mine. I can respect that. I think you can understand though, when someone says something about one of your good friends that you know, you stick up for them.

I don't see if there is no rules in the particular park how his behavior can be judged. Did you "call him out on it" that day, or just run him down here? If you did not say something to him that day, then your soap box does little good here.

Jeeps Only from Omaha area come to the pulls in Wisner, Ne. and are tow vehicles for the competitors.
Everyone appreciates them! They are careful with the vehicles, and use their radios to help get the tow vehicles where the competitors need them, since the pit area is spread out, and a LOT of pullers show up for that event.
Some really neat rigs!

North. Little po-dunk town called Truro, right off I-35. I shit you not, in school (I graduated class of 09), we were the I-35 roadrunners, and they used the cartoon as our little logo. I can stand in the middle of town, throw a rock, and hit a cornfield all four ways. I love it. :D

It's a "quaint" little town of ~800. It's on Highway 30 about halfway between Ames and Marshalltown.

Someone on here might know the guy. He has a waggy on 33-35s in the garage, another waggy next to the house and a YJ in the driveway.

Yes, I own a stock 94 Chevy K-1500, all I have done to it is Vodoo cam, Headers, 3in Exhaust and a posi 10 bolt rear, Nothing much as you can tell.. But I do wheel it once in awhile, theres not many places around here besides Level Bs and some Fields.. I want to lift it 4 -6 inchs and get some 33 - 35s or something so I can do a lil more with it and not worry about getting high centered again lol, I joined this site to learn a lil more before I go and order shit I dont need and waste my money, Im soon to order some 15in M/T Classic IIs but idk if I want the beadlocks or not.. they look cool but I really dont need them for the lil off roading I do.. or I could go cheaper and get the D Windows with the Beadlocks to save some money. .

Heres what It looked like last sept

and heres what it looked like about 3 weeks later, I no longer have the Moto Metals, I was offered more then what I paid for them so I let them go,

Well I hope I can get the bitch going tonight, Im sick of driving a civic to work everyday lol.. but I have been doing some shopping online here.. and im thinking about going with a 4in RCD lift and a 2 or 3in body lift, Would that look alright? I want to get some black steel beadlock wheels. and run 33 -35in BFG A/Ts.. Im really interested in lifting my truck.. so help would be great.. I dont wheel all the time but I would like to start doing a lil more.

Alex123456

Sounds like to much lift for 33-35's. Keep it low

Level_B
11-06-2010, 10:58 PM
So toss the body lift and just get a 4in lift with 35s? my buddy Tyler is running 35in Procomp XLs on his tahoe and he only has a 4 inch lift.. I dont know what size or backspacing on the tires are tho

Loftis61
11-07-2010, 01:55 AM
Honestly, to run 35" tires, you just need to crank the torsion bars that came on yoru year/make/model. Ride is a little rough, but It will help.

Im all about little lift and big tire combo's. I LOVE it when my buddys call me up with their 8 inch lift chevys and 38's amd need a tug on an old level B road. my stock dodge on 33's and the other on 34's gets in and pulls them out just fine.

Level_B
11-07-2010, 04:20 PM
If I crank them up im only goin to run a 33 on a 16in wheel.. but if I get a four inch lift ill prob run some 35s. I wanted to go with a 6 before.. but I dont need that much clearnce for the lil wheeling I do..
