Well pretty close to being done. It will eventually be riding on 33's but for now Rocktoad's 30's will do. Thanks Todd for the wheels. I still need to paint the underside and mount my jerry cans. CHP inspection on thursday so I hope it passes (I may need mudflaps but so does the Jeep). <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

The CHP doesn't need to inspect your trailer,
but the DMV does so you can obtain a VIN plate to register it.

Tell the DMV rep you built the trailer from
parts you have aquired over time. Approximate
the value under 100 for the whole thing.
And, don't forget, before your DMV appt, you must also have a weigh certificate for the
trailer.

Have fun..

Sherpa</STRONG>I called DMV today to make an appointment and what she told me was I would be given a referral which I need to take to the CHP for the trailer to be inspected for the vin tag. Once I get the vin tag I can go back to the DMV. I called the CHP and the guy said I could come there first without the referral so I don't have to make 2 trips to the DMV. I am going to weigh it next though at work.

Its great to live in Texas. All you do to register a home-built trailer is go down to the tax collector and tell them you've got a home-built and pay for the plates. No inspections, no trouble.

Well I was talking to friend of mine tonight and he said he didn't have to go to the CHP for an inspection when he built his trailer. I think monday I'm going to call the DMV office in Turlock and see what's up. That's where he registered his trailer. DMV= http://home.earthlink.net/~jeepnut92/bj.gif

In Oregon, you just build the trailer and use it. Fora a trailer that small, NOTHING is needed. no title, vin, or inspection. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

I like the trailer it looks nice...
On the DMV issue:

Trust me here, I've been building trailers
since high school.. (that's along time ago)
DMV will inspect it at their office.

here is what you gotta have:

trailer needs to be present at time of
your DMV appt.

You must have a certified-scale weight
certificate with you to reg the trailer.

must have operational lights, fenders, etc.

that's it.....

don't forget to tell them it was built
from junk you had collected over time,
and the entire thing is less than $100.00
(this will make your fees lower for annual
registrations)....

Turlock shouldn't be new to home-built
trailers either, but the CHP doesn't need
to be involved in the picture here at all.

BTW, nice work, is the diamond plate of
steel or aluminum??

I've got around $200 in tubing and diamond plate. $140 something for axle and springs, hangers, etc. $70 for Led taillights. $30 for the pintle hitch (I think?) $24 for fenders. All total with paint, grinder discs, hinges, latch, etc. I'm probably around $650.00 or so total on it.

Sherpa</STRONG>Well this is my first attempt at building a trailer so I was going off the info I originally received from the DMV yesterday. I will call again on monday and see if I get a different story. As far as the diamond plate goes it's steel. 12 gauge for the floor, tailgate and piece on the tongue. 14 gauge for the sides. The only aluminum diamond plate I used was around the lights. Thanks for the infor. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Very nice. I will have an extra set of 4" FJ 40 springs soon and I was thinking of using them to make a trailer. Also using the trailer tires that would be 35" for spares. Thanks for the Pic. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

That's my thinking too when I get 33's on it. I do wish I had used wrangler springs instead for spares but that's easily changed later on. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Well I had the CHP inspection on thursday and you guy's are right and the people at DMV are stupid. Trailer didn't need to go to the CHP unless it weighs over 6000 lbs. which mine weighs 5320 lbs. less than that. CHP was cool and gave me a VIN number but wanted to see receipts for materials that went into the trailer which I didn't have. I actually got a couple compliments on the trailer from a few cops which was cool. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/usa.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/usa.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/usa.gif" border="0">

Very kewl trailer. Did you build it from scratch or did you work from plans? Any close-up detail type photos of the finished product would be appreciated. <IMG SRC="smilies/glasses.gif" border="0">

Just wondering why you went with a swing tailgate instead of one that lowers?

[ 09-22-2001: Message edited by: Joel No_Bucks Fleischer ]</STRONG>Thanks. Trailer was built from scratch, no plans. I did draw up a little blue print for the frame but that was about it. I can take some more detailed pics tomorrow. Tailgate was kind of a toss up between drop down and swing style. I went with a swing because it seemed a little easier and I thought matched my Jeep tailgate better. Either way would be cool. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

<font color="yellow">Nice Trailer!... I was going to comment on the DMV issue, but you already got that worked out I see... My only thought on the long tongue is that the breakover angle between the jeep and the trailer kinda bites, but if you dont mind draggin it everyonce and a while, the better road manners should more than make up for it <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"></font c>

Boy I'm glad I don't live in the Republic of California. You people put up with way to much crap from the DMV. I got a new trailer that was factory built but to save a few bucks on taxes I told them it was a homebuilt (and it's highly modified so for the most part it is). Stood in line for 20 minutes, paid $18 walked out with a tag and a vin plate in hand. Nobody ever looked at it.
Trailer looks Killer BTW.
