: "fake" silencer question
crtbc 01-28-2009, 02:40 PM everyone is making fake silencers out of solid stock aluminum....and hats legal...
what if::: you make a fake silencer out of tube... say 1.5"OD 1/8"wall aluminum and weld the ends closed with like a nut or something and obviously a hole on either end... can be triple the projectile size to be safe....
Would this be classified as a silencer since I doesnt have baffles??? don't know if it would muffle the sound or not...
please inform me
4runner 01-28-2009, 02:48 PM several companies sell fake cans made with hollow tube...saw on on a TEC9 on gunbroker recently.
here are some for sale... http://sksparts.com/fakesuppressorsmuzzleextensionsmacandtec.htm
http://www.edu24.cn/brand_new_mlr_-sept_28_002.htm
seems there are several companies making realistic looking cans...no baffles and no way to add baffles...
braxton357 01-28-2009, 02:55 PM If you're talking about threading a tube on the end of a barrel and welding an endcap on the other end of any size while leaving the inside hollow, that is most definitely considered a "silencer" by the ATF. Fake cans that cover an entire barrel like in the gsg's case are a different story.
300sniper 01-28-2009, 03:23 PM if i wanted to make something that looked like a suppressor and not be totally retarded, i'd use a tube and leave the end open. rimfire guys use these "bloop tubes" to extend their sight radius. from what i hear, it also makes it much quieter from the shooting position but does not actually reduce the db down range.
i just made this clamp to attach a bloop tube to someone's .22lr that had an odd size barrel diameter. after i made it, i realized it was real close to the diameter of my 10/22 so i had to see what it would look like.

is that just an open length of tube attached?
Berne 01-28-2009, 04:08 PM Heh....I was just going to start a thread like this...
my thoughts were...like for the .22 mp5's that people are playing with....that the solid aluminum fake cans would be akwardly heavy hanging off the end of the barrels....
Legality aside, I would think a tube w/ welded ends would be much less annoying hanging off the end.

basically. it just an aluminum tube with a few threaded holes at the end for a front sight and it also has a dove tail style grooves down the top.

i think as long as there is an inner tube (no vents of ports) running the length of it, it should be fine. i agree that a solid piece of aluminum would be heavy and awkward.

Have you been reading the thread at silencertalk on this very subject? There's guy selling just this thing on ebay and it's pretty much walking the line. As we all know, the atf can make anything into a machine gun, suppressor, or dd if they don't like you enough.

:edit: But, a hollow tube with two endcaps will land you in federal court if you were to get caught with it.

Walking the line in deed... if you just don't insert the inner tube that is threaded at both ends... then it would be considered a silencer if your edit is correct which I think it would be

no, i don't read silencertalk. i live in california. there is no point in me having that information:p
i agree, with the modular set up that guy on ebay had, it would only take 10 minutes with a hand drill to make it quieter. i don't think i'd want to be that close. i could see making a fully welded one if i had to have something look that realistic. in all honesty, a fake suppressor is kind of retarded in my opinion. add a bunch of weight to your weapon just so it looks cool?
bobbo27 01-29-2009, 08:50 AM I have to agree with 300sniper, I could only see a fake can being useful if you needed it to make length while waiting for paperwork or something.
But, having access to the machine shop like I do, if I had something with a threaded barrel I would probably make one for fun
Of course then I would be tempted to make it functional, and end up torching the damn thing before I end up in FPMITA prison.

So just submit the form one, then build away
4runner 01-29-2009, 02:48 PM these are much lighter than you may think and many people want the cool look without the $200 postage stamp...

I'm sure I'll be stamping as soon as I can afford it (hmmm...TAX return time is soon:laughing:) but for now I just wanna look cool.

I'm sure I will, when I can afford it. Dammit, now you all got me thinking about making more gun shit at school :flipoff2:
I should probably buy the rest of the parts for my AR before I make can for it anyway
