: Montana checking in!
rockzuk 01-31-2012, 07:48 PM I like to eat the cutthroats :)
Me thinks we zoo folks should do a little fishing this year
Let's do that!!!
Also, it's still ice fishin season!
I have never tried fly fishing we usually stick to the ocean and Boone dogging the river but than again we are usually after salmon or steelhead.
You're missin out! I miss ocean fishin (I grew up on the ocean), but fly fishin is fully rad!

Jebadiah04 02-01-2012, 08:01 AM Never ice fished, but fell though on cda lake as a kid once :)

East of Clinton on 90 I would assume. We went up there a few weeks ago, there was no snow and a ton of ice. I'm sure the storm dumped up there, but it's nothing like it was last year.
Jebadiah04 02-06-2012, 02:59 PM If I can get my tires by then, and mounted. and my rear end rebuilt im in.
SKULLYOTA 02-07-2012, 04:01 PM Blacktail Wildbill Trail is in Lakeside MT, right by the ski hill.
Jebadiah04 02-07-2012, 04:04 PM Shit I dunno if my rig can handle 100 miles of 93, lol
rocky mnt. crawler 02-07-2012, 09:48 PM How many are planning on making the trip? Maybe meet you up there.
jeep4lf 02-08-2012, 09:38 PM so changed the date to Saturday the 25th Home depot wouldn't let me have Sunday off, so now its set for Saturday, im headed to great falls this weekend, and wont have the jeep up there so will have a lot of time on my hands, so hoping to have it all scheduled and ready to go. right now is plan to leave missoula earlier and get to lakeside and meet everybody that we don't meet at the zoo at a gas station there. and take off from the gas station up black tail (i don't exactly know where im going but my brother has been there before so im sure i will just be following him up there.) hope we can get a pretty good group going =)
jeep4lf 02-15-2012, 09:30 PM So changed it all from blacktail to racetrack racetrack is near deer lodge and looks like a better winter style trail any questions just ask date is still going to be the 25th
If you have 4x4 trails of western Montana the trail is on page 81

i think he meant the racetrack exit off I90, past racetrack cabin and up to Alpine and Abicaulis (sp?) lakes.
Thomspson Lake is also fun in the winter i hear.

Maybe a little lol just heard there was a lot of ice and for my first run I'd like to make it a little easier. Also no reco points and not the best tires so I'm sure I would get stuck and break my axle trying to get out.
rockzuk 02-19-2012, 04:47 PM Bummer. I have to work Saturdays.
Also, Blacktail/Wildbill trail is nothin to be afraid of. It's a fun run and stock rigs can take bypasses when wanted. It's not a difficult trail, but one could make it so!

A trail that a jeep can handle when it's snowy. :flipoff2:

Come on up. I missed Snow Bash getting my buggy ready for KOH, and need a Blacktail run this winter.
It's also great in April in the corn snow!!

Yup! The Skyliners and Big Sky 4-Wheelers clubs have worked very hard to make the trail system challenging for built rigs while interesting (but not impossible) for stock-ish rigs.
Stock-anything isn't going to make the trail in the winter. You need at least wide 33's on most rigs, or 31's on a Sami and air down to 2-4 or less psi. Locker(s) help but aren't absolutely necessary.

See the funny part is that I'm new to wheeling and have gotten support by everybody except a few yota owners yes my jeep would have a hard time up there now with a 3 inch lift and 31s that's not much better than stock.
HLL.RZR.DAK 02-20-2012, 06:56 PM Toyotaguys will allways make fun of and or give jeep guys a hard time.as long as its not a big pile of junk you will be fine.

Glad to hear you're getting into the sport! You should come wheel up here when the snow melts. You will have a blast! Don't be hatin' on the yota guys. It is all in fun.:D
Do you know the best upgrade for a jeep?
Hook a toyota to the front of it!!! hahaha :flipoff2: Jus playin.. :flipoff2:

Don't get all butthurt. You're on Pirate.
Flip some shit back this way. It's all good!
Just don't say that Blacktail isn't great for snow wheelin'. It is. :flipoff2:
Snow: Be willing to air down to single digits. Ideally 1-2psi.
Take along an air compressor.
Blown beads are a possibility at these low pressures, but you'll go much farther with low tire pressure.
Take along a hilift jack.
Take along a can of ether and a match and be willing to use it. (and have an idea of how to light a tire safely).
Get your rig LIGHT!! Run your soft top if you have one, or go topless and dress like you're going skiing or snowmobiling!!
Sipe your tires.
Borrow some larger tires. Snow is relatively forgiving. If you're not being a throttle-jockey, you can run 33s or possibly 35's on your D30/D35 and just motor along normally.
See the funny part is I'm willing to help you, but I'll also flip you a lot of shit, especially if you're thin-skinned!
Toyotaguys will allways make fun of and or give jeep guys a hard time.as long as its not a big pile of junk you will be fine.
We don't know what to say to the badass Dodge guys, so we just give them room. :flipoff2:
You're more likely to find a big pile of junk Toyota on the trail than a pile of junk Jeep. Chances are, the pile of junk Toyota owner put his money into stuff you can't see. It's the shiny Jeep guys you have to watch out for.
MT4Runner 02-21-2012, 08:15 AM You should come wheel up here when the snow melts.
Absolutely! You can get into as much or as little of 90% of the obstacles as you want!!! There is fun to be had whether you're on 28's or 40's or everything in between.

It all depends on who the driver is. :D
I used to wheel my wife's rig to make things more interesting.. until there was that trip with what I thought was a non-op oil pressure gauge.. turns out, the gauge was working fine.. :D
Pretty much anywhere you go you're going to struggle with the deep snow until you re-learn how to drive, so you might as well stay closer to home. No point in driving across the state for that!
I usually tell the new guys to bring their rig, but be prepared to ride shotgun - I'd rather have you ride with me and learn some more than get frustrated and turn back.
I don't mind dragging guys around, but some folks have a hard time dealing with being on the wrong end of the strap. Better to park your rig and ride along and get the experience than to turn tail and run, or really hurt yourself/rig by trying to make it do things it's not ready for.
Jebadiah04 02-22-2012, 12:53 PM I got no qualms against riding bitch. Its cheaper, and I can get drunk. :)
jeep4lf 02-22-2012, 05:57 PM I have my brother coming from Missoula if anybody is up for the ride but will not be going back till Sunday because we are staying at the cabin, so Jeb if your interested let me know and I'll set you up with my brother

As wrong as it may sound, Lithia actually hires well trained and more than half way intelligent "technicians". If it wasn't so cheap for me to change my own oil at work, I'd pay them to do it. I highly doubt Tony or Dallas loosened the exhaust durin an oil change. Crawl up under and check it out, it supposed to be 36° tomorrow! :flipoff2:

FYI, if this is the Deep Creek i think you're referring to (out by the pulp mill-ish) please don't go. there is NO LEGAL wheeling out there, and Fish and Wildlife Wardens patrol the area in force. KPAX did a news series about OHV's a couple years ago and focused only on all the idiots who tore that place up, and taped people riding around and getting tickets.
Missoula is already an anti-offroad town, don't need anymore bad press....just trying to warn people.

MT4Runner 03-29-2012, 09:45 AM If I cut it in half and only run four cylinders, would it be a 2.8l engine? Would that be like a stroked 2.4l engine?
Does anyone else want the other half?
Your .sig from your smart phone "Sent from my mudwhistle via lemmiwinks." is so wrong...and so fucking hilarious! :lmao:

TuckahoeOR 05-01-2012, 01:59 PM As of about one hour ago I accepted a job in Malta MT, so if everything works out in the next two weeks I will be moving 2200 miles North West.
Are any of you guys near Malta or better yet know anyone that way. Been a member on Pirate a while but typically stick to the NC4X4.com and the toyota forums.
I drive a 96 Tacoma

Are you an oilfield worker? If not, have you looked at Malta on the map?
IME it's a fuel stop between Havre and Glasgow.. not much around there, though the old Zortman mine could be fun to visit.
I guess it is a pretty big town - it is big enough to sport one fast food joint, the local DQ.
TuckahoeOR 05-02-2012, 09:12 AM Not an oil field worker. Engineer for the NRCS. I know it is very remote but thought I would give it a shot on here. At 24 years old its all about the money.
ccj8008 05-07-2012, 06:20 AM There is a little bit of wheeling near Malta. Head 50 miles south to Zortman, in the Little Rockies. Trails out of the campground around the mine and Fort Belknap reservation. If you are into target shooting, the prairie dogs around Zortman draw marksmen from all around.
SKULLYOTA 05-07-2012, 06:42 AM there's some BLM OHV land closer to Havre too.
