I'm from Montana. Don't do anything close to hardcore wheeling but I like the stuff that can be done in stock 4x4's. Looking forward to getting my truck out this summer on some stuff! It was torn apart in my garage all last summer, but it's been up & running for a few months now.

Where are you guys at?

I'd love to make it down to Moab. I'll be in the area in May, but likely not in my truck. We'll be doing more backpacking & hiking than driving.

I did see that one and went over to check it out. Sense it is a club site I thought there may be a regular public forum (ie. pirate) used there too. Just curious. The wife has been offered a job at the medical center in Libby so I'm checking things out.

Sean --Sorry but as little population as we have that is the only statewide site. All of the cities and regions in the state that have clubs are members of the M4x4a. M4x4a is also a member of the national organization (UFWDA-United Four Wheel Drive Association).

Actually that is a good thing. That would mean that most folks that do any "web wheeling" would be on that site. That is what I was looking for, a good place to gather info about Montana four wheeling.
Thanks.:D

So.....was it just me, or did anyone else think it was funny we are in the "USA - North Central" with NoDak, SoDak, and Minnesota...rather than PNW?? Or does living closer to Seattle than to Broadus just make it feel that way to me in W. MT?

If you can't make it in your stock Subaru, the FS thinks it should be closed..

So...

...maybe I'm being too paranoid too late, but we've had it good here in Kalispell with one district on the Flathead NF.

What if Nobama changes the FS Administration (he will) and they try to shut down everything the Skyliners and Big Sky 4Wheelers have done in the past four years. We will need everyone's help in Montana and beyond when travel planning goes through this spring to lock the new changes in. The original Skyliners were very forward-looking 37 years ago when they asked the FS to make the Blacktail-Wild Bill Trail a National Recreation Trail (and it still is, today). We need to be as forceful in making the current changes permanent!!!!

Couple of those Mountaineers piss me off. Went on a run some years back with them and these two guys were giving this poor chap (wife and kids present) too much hell for getting stuck. If you don't have 40 grand in your toyota or Jeep these fucks don't want anything to do with you being on a run with them.

I really like seeing new people in the beginning stages of wheelin cause I remember how much fun it was, and is, learning how much fun it is to be in your rig outdoors.

Swore I wouldn't support that crew but I may have to suck it up. We'll see. I have been jonesin' to get on that divide ride for years. I just need to dedicate the time and do it.

the guys out of Kalispell / Columbia Falls and bigfork are awesome, First time i ever meet MT4Runner was when i got my F350 high-centered on a stump, him and PDC_RNR came up Blacktail and spent 4 hours helping me get it off the stump ... even started pouring rain for a bit. Hell, he's even got his garage full of shiny new parts, and a few old dirty parts waiting to go on my CJ while i'm over seas .... the C-Falls guys are equally as awesome, I cut a tire on some rocks and had to flat tow back to the house, and one of them (for the life of me i can never remember his name on here) loaned me his spare to make the trip ... argueably some of the best guys in the PNW in my mind! Looking foward to getting up there to do some drinking, wrenching, and wheeling with them again!!

Nick

EDIT:
I'll even admit that Montanatrout's Scout II is an amazingly bad ass scout ... even if the only thing left on it thats actually Scout is 1/2 a cab :flipoff2: he just needs to learn to drive ... cant even keep from flipping it on flat roads :blackflipoff2:

You can't judge an entire club based on the actions of a few individuals.

Yes, people do it, but that doesn't make it right. Those two guys are giving the club a black eye--in your eyes--and therefore probably others...but that doesn't make the good people in the club jackasses, either.

Do you have a favorite bar, a favorite restaurant? What if one server is a complete nincompoop, but the bartender a really cool gal. Do you stop going there and judge the entire establishment based on the one idiot server, or do you sit at the bar and tip your favorite bartender well, and just ignore the idiot?

Clubs are like that, too. People from all walks of life join clubs. We would just love to accept all perfect people in clubs, but then there would be zero people fighting together for what we all need to stand for--responsible OHV use and public land access. Frankly, there is strength in numbers. Someone might be kind of a jerk to some people, but really good at land use. Do you throw the baby out with the bathwater, or let them in and try to soften their negative spots?

I am a member of a club in Kalispell. We're working really, really, really, really hard on land use, and we have a very positive relationship with the local Forest Service Ranger District. In my opinion, this is a good use of a "club". Does our club have social runs, too? Sure. Do I go on a lot of them? No. I usually only have time to go on a run or two a month; often my family's schedule conflicts with the club scheduled runs, so I more often go out with my close friends..some of whom are club members, some are not.

There is a big group of guys in my area who used to be members of our club. They didn't like other members of the club, and quit. I wish they hadn't--they're good people, but they let others personalities get in the way of important goals. Now we have fewer people helping us fight directly for lands use.

The Gallatin NF has closed a lot of once-legal roads and trails. You need to get involved to help get some of that back. That is what is important!!!

Oh, and your username: :lmao: Good stuff!

Looks like Shawn has covered most of it already.

I've had good experiences with the Mountaineers. Even when I showed up for a trail ride on 33s, and the next smallest guy had itty bitty 35s..

http://www.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/trail_rides/bozeman_4_99/image20.jpg

Several of the Mountaineers come up and wheel with us with some regularity. Lots of good folks in there, even if they have to purge a few bad apples now and then. We've had similar issues in our club over the years.

I am a friend and a volunteer for just about any org. that is fighting the good fight to keep public land public and accessable (don't think I spelled that right.) If I offended in some way, any other Mountaineer I apologize and I will now go repent:D

I just have a problem with a couple LOCAL members and that has prevented me from joining.

Sorry to hear that... we could really use some new members because our numbers are getting low. If you have a problem with certain people in the club feel free to PM me and I'll let you know if they are still involved.

Unfortunately it's hard to please everyone with just one club. I here people call us pussies an not joining because we "treading lightly" and try to work with the FS & BLM. I also here people say we are to "hard core" and they don't feel welcome because they don't have a heavily built rig. People complain when the trail rides are to easy... and when they are to hard.

If everyone were to just join the club (or any club) there would be enough different people that we could have easy and hard trail rides every month. I try to encourage as many people to join as possible. We have strength in numbers and while organized. With out some sort of organization we can't compete with the "green" opposition.

Our meetings are the 2nd Thrs of every month (7pm) at MacKenzie River Pizza in Belgrade. I usually post up the trail rides on M4x4a.org right after that if you are ever interested. Not sure when the next one will be... We are having a motorized swap meet on 5/17 where it will be free to shop (booth space for sellers is 10$) and all profits are going to access-oriented organizations.

There are several "real" wheelers in the Missoula area, but not much wheelin' to be done, the greens have shut it all down.

I think there's stuff over by Superior. Otherwise, a lot of the organized Missoulans are members of the Skyliners out of Polson. :D

There's also the Mountain Jacks (http://www.mountainjacks4x4.com), a racing club out of Frenchtown, and Willie Worthy has his Backroads club (http://www.montanabackroads.org/) in Evaro.

Mike, unless you really, really, really need the Taco 3rd, you can put a 4cyl/v6 3rd in a Taco/Tundra housing by redrilling/re-tapping 6 of 10 holes.

...are 3rd gen Runner 3rds the same thing as Taco 3rds, or are the non-elocker 3rds just a regular 79-95 8" 3rd? MT-Toy has a '99? 4Runner he's using as a donor for his 83 pickup rebuild...build is on the Pickup and 4Runner forum.

Shawn I believe that the 3rd gen 4runner and elocker are not interchangeable with the 8.4 the stud in my housing are also larger than the studs in all the 8" housing Ive been around. If i don't come up with something soon i well get a new axle or re gear the 3rd i have, I plan on putting in 5:29's in but don't want to spend the money now so with my duel case I'd like to run 4:10's for the time being

No, it's not a bolt-in swap, but from everything I've seen (and people who've put eLockers in both 8" housings and Taco housings), the critical dimension--the distance from the 3rd mounting surface to the centerline of the axleshafts--is the same on all three.

There are 4 or 6 of the 10 studs that are in the same spot between any two of the various three...so they'll get you aligned. If Taco studs are bigger, just drill a 4cyl 3rd out to 10mm.

In 2 or 3 hours, you could make any one fit the other.

Call Spaldings in Spokane--they have a lot of late model Toys. Going price for a working eLocker out of a 3rd gen Runner is $350. An open Taco 4.10 should run $200?

...also...and this is just hearsay on my part...I have heard of more t-case output shaft failure if you run duals and 4.10's..especially with larger tires. If you go to an upgraded (Longfield or Marlin) output shaft, you're getting close to the cost of 5.29's.

...but if you break an output shaft, call me--I have 3 spare stockers! :D

stealtoy
04-02-2009, 11:20 AM
good teak, your right that 4:10 will put much more stress on the transfer case. and putting in a different 3rd would not take much. I did not know that they align the same, that's good to know thanks for the info

yeah i'm a backroads member, but i have only ever met one Zoolian that was a Skyliner, but i like what they get done up there.

Big Sky 4 Wheelers has a meeting tonight. 7pm at the old Pioneer School.

Drive north on US 2 East out of Kalispell; just past Glacier Park Intl Airport, the blue hangers will be on your left (West).

Turn right (East) on Pioneer Road.
Drive one mile East, the School is white with red trim and a green roof. Turn right (South) past the school and park behind the school.

We just had our annual Snow Bash run last month, so run planning will be pretty slow, but we earned $1,100 at the raffle afterward, and we just heard we earned a $3,000 matching grant...so we'll be talking about how to spend a$4,100 on the Blacktail/Wild Bill trail!!! :grinpimp:

We've got a pretty good in with Davez Offroad Performance--see link in my .sig below. He's got great pricing on TG parts. You can put your own hi-steer together for about $250, rather than buying a $350 kit. (arms from davez, tapped for Chevy ends @ $20-25/ea, DOM for links).

I love my rears up front. I'm planning to get rid of my chevies and run Fords in the rear; help me with the fords later this spring and you can have the chevies!! (and I'll help you put 'em on your rig).

Start hoarding parts, you'll want a couple extra t-cases and an IFS box.

Also lots of people in the club perpetually moving up in tire size, so it's usually easy to find a decent used set of 33's or 35's a lot cheaper than anywhere else.

I grew up in Great Falls, but didn't wheel a lot back then. We used to load up in the family Suburban and explore the jeep trails around Kings Hill. I heard a lot of those old backroads have been gated/closed/obliterated.

nckwnchstr should be here ~May 1, and we'll have a huge build party at my place in Kalispell to get his Heep built before he has to go back to Texas ~2 weeks later.

Fords because they're about 5" shorter in back. Chevy's aren't bad under a 4Runner because of the length of the body...but under any bobbed rig (and pickups are easy to leave full length, but bob the lower rear sheet metal "up") they tend to drag and give you worse departure angle.

I will probably be out of town next weekend, but I'll give you access to the BS4W email list so you can email and check for a ride. PM me your email address again and I'll add it.

Good idea.

Most of us are pretty well covered, but not a bad idea to check first.
Your front axle is worth $200
Your tranny is probably a G52 or G54, so only worth about $100...if somebody wanted it.
Your t-case is worth $100...but you should hang onto it if you want to go duals.
Your rear axle (solid front axle width) is worth $100 in credit @ Sky's Offroad--they make them into stronger offset-diff Samurai axles.
Your push-pull steering box is worth ~$50; people were using them to convert old Fords to power steering.

Your carb'ed motor is worth $500 if it runs, or a core if it's not destroyed.

Save the drivelines for cores
Save your rear leaves--they're great for rears-up-front.
Save the doors to make half doors
Save the hood and fenders and signal lights for spares for your Runner!!!

Please join me in congratulating our 2008 M4x4A (http://www.m4x4a.org) Award Recipients.

These include:

John Hazard Memorial Conservation Award: Big Sky 4-Wheelers member Shawn Baker aka MT4Runner

M4x4A Four Wheeler of the Year: Skyliners' Nancy Hines

Junior Four Wheeler of the Year: Frontier's Kelsey and Hannah Kerker

Congratulations, Shawn. Nancy has your plaque. You missed your chance to give an acceptance speech. :D

No way!!! What for? :D
You missed me giving an acceptance speech...just ask Tophvytoy what happens when I get a hold of the microphone. har har

I have a motor that might need a ride from Sacto. I'm tight on $$$ right now, but it's too good of a deal to pass up--a Davez motor with only 1,500 mi on the rebuild.

I'll be on the plane in a few hours, got stops in Pheonix, LA, and SLC ... but I'm looking foward to meeting everyone who's up for pitching in on the build. got a little more work than we planned at first, after some deliberation we've decided to fabricate a whole new frame (thanks for the advice Montanatrout ... wish you could be here to help out and get some wheeling done) but the whole process should go pretty quickly.

Looking foward to a few 's and some good food, laughs, and good times shared with good friends! See y'all soon!

I'm pretty sure you still can drive there. Get on the Montana 4x4 Association website and go to the Frontier 4-Wheelers (Helena 4x4 club) subsection and post up there.

I was in the Elkhorns on the other side of I-15 last fall, and got to drive through the Boulder tunnel--it's pretty country!!

Right on! That's pretty country on the Rocky Mountain Front. My grandparents lived in Choteau when I was a kid. Hope you like wind--but the sky is almost always blue!!

Just don't tell anyone when you get there that you're from CA. Lie and say you're from Nevada.

we should get a run planned for this summer/fall planned somewhere in our huge state. there is obviously a few of us from montana who are close enough to set something up. kind of a meet-greet-wheel-eat-kinda thing. there is going tom be a few of us up at the blacktail OHV 6/11-12. and we had a blast down at whitehall last year, exept for the BLM cops showed up to harrass, we were totally legal on public land but they were pissy cause a guy was taking lots of pics in our group and mentioned they might get to a magazine, well apparently you need a $5 permit for that, and thats all they needed to be dicks

I had a fun time with everyone - even with it snowing - at Blacktail last June.

We're planning a run around P-burg on 6/13-14 doing some pre-running for DR (http://www.montanadivideride.com). Camping at Race Track.

And as far as that trail down near Silver Star... latest news (from last week) is we finally got some BLM guys to show up and talk about it on the ground, and BLM sounds willing to let it be open, but wants us to buy a permit to use it. I'm not quite sure WTF is up with that, so we're still in negotiations with 'em.

I think it means the trail still isn't legal yet. *sigh*

Meanwhile, BLM is closing just about everything else they have to motorized around here.. ROD goes into effect in less than 30 days.

This sounds like a really good idea to me. If it happens anywhere near the Greater Flathead area then I can provide some camping area at our place in Bigfork and I'd be willing to do whatever else to contribute.
Also I am trying to get an "unclub" started in this area something like a semi organized wrenching/beer drinking/B.S. thing with something for Kids/wives/girlfriends to do too. Maybe every other friday nite or something. If this sounds interesting to anyone out there send me a PM and we can start something going.

Yeah, funny thing, that. USSF wanted us to buy a permit and insure the Hngry Hrose track. I told them I'd be willing to work on anything that was public access to the general public--and haven't heard back.

The University has attracted a lot of undesirables to the area and Missoula has shut down pretty much all 4x4 activities in the area.

Doubtful I'll get to go this weekend. My last trip out, I seem to have welded the 2nd gear cluster to the mainshaft in my T-19. I was able to drive home, but it won't go backwards, and it's stuck in 2nd. :D

I have a spare T19 and got my tranny jack back, but my racer is in the shop still. Hope to get it out soon and then I can R&R the 4spd and have my trail rig back - just in time for the snow to melt. :(

Still, there are trails to lead at Divide Ride, so I guess I should get it fixed sooner than later.

Depends on how "really" curved - you mean a 61-68 Travelall? No.

The 69-75 "square" trucks use curved glass, too - and I need one good front windshield still.

I bought one a while back, but broke it after moving it across Missoula when I took it out of the truck momentarily before the trip home. (we were moving my brother across town)

Good to see there's a few of us on pirate.

I'm in GF and just moved to a house with a garage so I have a place to finally SAS my truck. So while I'm saving for a SAS the only trails I'll be doing are on the dirtbike, but if anyone needs a hand wrenching on stuff I'd be glad to help out.

I already can't wait to be able to actually flex a front axle.

get a map and go for some drives. Gold Creek/Rainbow Lakes off I90 exit 166 is doable in a stock rig, Thompson Lake, some trails out of P-burg/Granite ghost town are stock rig territory. just gotta take time to explore for yourself, it's a big pretty state

The only requirement for membership is that you OWN a 4x4. We make no stipulation that it actually run, or that it's even capable of driving all 4 tires. :D

If I didn't have so many rigs, I might be without a 4x4 at times.. as it is, I don't have anything I generally choose to wheel operational at the moment, just the snowy-roads Scout (that I just drained the choco-pudding out of the diff, because I had "the Scout that I don't wheel" sitting in a water crossing for a while..)

You'll fit right in! Hamilton has several liberal citizens, but Missoula is the worst in western MT. It's a beautiful area, has excellent fly fishin, and wonderful views. Hamilton is somewhat remote, you'll be lookin at a 45 minute drive to the city (Missoula). If you can, spend a few days in the area. There are a few other communities around Hamilton that are smaller and more tight knit (my style).

If you come over and need some direction for exploration, hit me up. I live 45 minutes east of Missoula. I'm always lookin for an excuse to take my fly rod up the Root!

Well, if you're in need of some good fly fishin, I happen to live on Rock Creek. We have some of the best fishin around these parts. The east fork of the Bitterroot, between Darby and Sula is some of my favorite, just a strike for me.
