ColoYJ 08-22-2002, 08:38 PM Check your other post
MoabZJ 08-22-2002, 09:41 PM I'll be there that weekend. I may be camping in the middle of Golden Spike on Thursday night, but we'll be in town by Friday for sure. Not sure where to stay as we are still unsure how man people we have coming along.
What trails are you looking to run?
Cody
rockbiter 08-22-2002, 10:17 PM not sure what trails we are going to hit, we want to make it memorable though....any suggestions....we will probably hit something moderate on friday and make sure our shit holds together and then hit the harder stuff saturday and sunday.... if you know the area, man come run us through the ringer....got any suggestions, maybe that will be another post in a couple of days;)
rockbiter 08-22-2002, 10:20 PM hey Austin, i will do that, man why do people have to fawker's... maybe we should rethink the meeting point to the local grocery store, what ya think... never been to the area, so you guys that have help me out here....
MoabZJ 08-23-2002, 07:05 AM Most people use the City Market as a meeting place.
The first day we will also be running something moderate. We're trying to finish up a 350, d44/12 blt into a YJ thing right now and it'll be the maiden voyage for that rig. Maybe something like Hells Revenge or Metal Masher for starters.
Saturday and Sunday we will most likely run Pritchett Canyon one day and hopefully Lower Helldorado or Rusty Nail on sunday before we head out.
Cody
rockbiter 08-23-2002, 07:08 AM tell me what time to meet at the market and we'll be there.... those are the same runs we are considering....lets join up, it should be interesting to say the least.... you think a tj locked front and rear with 33's can handle the harder runs???

Yeah - alot of people use City Market for meeting place...
it seems alot of board members do to...its central in town and there is always jeeps in the southwest corner...
I am checking my box and email...
us locals might have to work on friday...so its weekend or night run!
rockbiter 08-23-2002, 09:39 AM so what do you think Austin about my buddies TJ, what runs should he stay away from??
Moab Austin 08-23-2002, 09:45 AM the trails mentioned above, Pritchett- lowerhelldorado-Rustynail is about as hard as a TJ will do...
rustynail will be a bitch - pritchett and rusty will prolly need a strap up one obstacle each..
but its doable
Bill Collins 08-23-2002, 10:43 AM not sure when i will be there, maybe friday evening or sat.morning.if i come in friday do you think i can get a motel room?or a camp spot with showers?does any one know how far it is from colombine pass co.to moab?that is where we will be camping during the week.and post a time and place to meet in the mornings,thanks...
rockbiter 08-23-2002, 11:22 AM I know the place we are staying has tent spots available with showers, etc. I think it was pretty reasonable.. click on the link above... dont know where columbine pass is, is it close to a town...
looks like the city market is where we should meet every morning. dont know what time though.... i know the earlier the better....
zukstur 08-23-2002, 12:13 PM A couple of us from Dove Creek my be in moab that sunday. Rockbiter and Bill what time are you guys meeting at city market?
Bill Collins 08-23-2002, 12:15 PM yes it sounds like the city market would be the best place to meet.colombine pass is between montrose and moab in the national forest, but it is mostly mountains roads untill you get to utah.i think i will just come on to moab friday evening and fine a place to sleep:D
rockbiter 08-23-2002, 12:15 PM say, would 8 am be too early for everyone to meet at the market or is it not early enough...???? Input
Bill Collins 08-23-2002, 12:18 PM Originally posted by rockbiter
say, would 8 am be too early for everyone to meet at the market or is it not early enough...???? Input no later than 8:00 for sure, unless it is alot cooler than here in texas...
rockbiter 08-23-2002, 12:25 PM hell, i could go alot earlier if ya want... to us TX boys 7 am is really 8 am for us due to the time change...I just checked moab's avg. temps for the year and it says september is around 87 for the high and 57 for the low... right now its 86 degrees.... looks real nice...if you want to meet earlier for a full full day of wheeling, lets meet earlier, i am game.... yall tell me...
Bill Collins 08-23-2002, 12:31 PM if i could make over to moab friday, that would be great.my uncle may be with me,can he ride his four-wheeler on the trials too?
MoabZJ 08-23-2002, 01:39 PM I think a locked tj on 33's will fare fine. I'm open front and rear and on 33's and I havn't had too many problems. Moab is wheelbase friendly though.
I'm only hoping to do Rusty Nail, I don't know how to get to it. I have good directions to Helldorodo and I know the general area of that trail. I've done Pritchett before so that's no problem to find.
Like I said, If we make it down early we're going to head into Golden Spike and camp so I wouldn't be around to meet on Friday morning. I won't know for sure for a few more days.
8 a.m. man that hurts just thinking about it. I'm not sure if I'll be sober enough to drive by then. How bout 1:30? ----- I guess if ya'll want 8 am then that'll work, but you're going to be dealing with a bunch of angry tired hung over folks on the trail. ;)
Cody
rockbiter 08-23-2002, 01:47 PM so Grocery, just checked out your pics, so which one is yours and who's grand is running the boggers, what size are those...
MoabZJ 08-23-2002, 02:24 PM Mine is the one in the "my ZJ " folder. the most recent pics are in "Cage etc."
The boggered Zj belongs to a guy named Travis from back east. They are 37" boggers and he's running 12-14" of lift. This spring I'll have my 37" MTR's on w/ 4.5" lift. Less tippy.
Cody
J Kimmel 08-23-2002, 05:40 PM Guys I am planning on being there Friday the 13th late. I am planning on running Lower Helldorado and then over to Upper on Saturday, I will be riding my mtn bike Sunday. I would love to have someone join, as I really don't want to run upper alone. Anyhow, I have a white SAS 4runner with no doors and a full exo on 37" MTR's, and yes City Market is the place to meet up, very central right on main street and easy to see, plenty of parking.
BTW Austin-finally got my winch figured out, it was in fact the solonoid. F-150 starter solonoids don't work, I bought the Warn version and it works great now.
Jeremy
Bill Collins 08-23-2002, 06:16 PM i am sure we will have a 4-wheeler rider or 2 that might could join you when you ride your bike...
J Kimmel 08-23-2002, 08:05 PM but noone to wheel with?
zukstur 08-23-2002, 10:05 PM 8 am is good it has cooled off a little this last week. Bill if you go to Naturita you can catch a highway to moab by way of the paradox highway 90 which comes out south of moab about 22 miles. you have to go north out of Naturita a few miles on highway 141 to get to highway 90.
Bill Collins 08-23-2002, 10:30 PM thanks rick,i know where you are talking about.looked on the map and it will be my shortest way.i am gonna try to get to moab fri.night,if not i will find the meeting place before 8:00 a.m. on sat.morning...
rockbiter 08-23-2002, 10:36 PM kimmel
I am totally up for upper helldorado, but i traveling with some friends and he doesnt want to punish his TJ... so i was thinking about loading them up and hitting upper on sunday if we could find some others to run... ride your bike on saturday;)
damn this has turned into a good thread... boys, I look forward to meeting you all ....

hey Bill, just call and make some tent reservations at the place we are staying... make hooken up alot easier..
J Kimmel 08-24-2002, 07:43 PM hmmmm....well I could do upper on Sunday, the problem is, I plan on heading home that day. It could take a few hours it could take all day. I know I can ride Porcupine Rim on my mtn bike in two hours. Austin let me know on the night thing, think I'll be there for that.
Bill Collins 08-25-2002, 01:22 PM bump
any more board members want to join, could make it a big turnout...

Bill Collins 08-25-2002, 02:21 PM hey rick,do you know if camping is still open in the nat.forest?or is it to dry?
zukstur 08-25-2002, 08:48 PM Bill in the san juans they opened up the camping a few weeks back but you still can't have a camp fire. A gas barbeque grill is ok, but no four wheelers or motorcycles the on trails, just on the main roads.
You should be able to get on the web and type in the forest you are planing on camping in and it will give you the restrictions for that particular forest. or try national forest and go from their.
Your best bet for finding the game is to find water first.
hope this helps
Bill Collins 08-26-2002, 10:33 AM thanks rick...
rockbiter 08-26-2002, 11:11 AM well the 12th is getting closer... anyone else to join in...
RockRover 08-26-2002, 11:25 AM Just to give a head's up...The Solihul (land rover) National Rally is being held that weekend. Shouldn't be a big issue, (150+ rigs'), but some of the trial's (Pritchet, Lower H, Rim), might get bogged down a little if your not in front.
rockbiter 08-26-2002, 11:27 AM what days are the Rovers running??? Do you think you could get me a listing of the trails they will be running and the times they are starting.... hmmm... i have never worked on a Rover before:flipoff2: should be interesting...

They are running the 12, 13, 14th...There is a rotation on just about every trail in moab. IMO, there won't be too many that are tackling the 4+'s....Most are there to kick tires and check out the awesome views. I believe that the line-up's start at 8:00am for the 4+'s...Leave time usually is about 1/2hr after that.

2stroke 08-28-2002, 05:10 PM hey guys im probably gunna show up too.. look for me

Bill Collins 08-28-2002, 08:00 PM hey 2stroke,i will be camping in the uncompahgre forest all week.if you wanna show me some trials around montrose let me know.i will be there until sun.22nd.thanks Bill...
zukstur 08-28-2002, 08:23 PM Bill, I heard die tryin was a good trail at montrose, and then there is 21 road at Grand junction which 2 stroke has probably run.
2stroke upper heldarodo has three obsticals plus the water fall. We ran it two weeks ago with out to much trouble, but broke on upper proving grounds.
This week end we ran some stuff off of hw 141 and i rolled my buggy. Slight damage to the hood but the 1 3/4 .120 roll bar held up to a three quarter roll. The buggy stood up on the left rear tire and rotated over on to the top , then the right side. It took a hard hit on the drivers corner of the main hoop. the real pain was when we flopped it back on its wheels it ended up in the oak brush. Now that stuff is hard to get out of. I have some pics if any one wants to post them for me.
2stroke 08-28-2002, 09:33 PM send um too me zuk. ill post um
2stroke 08-28-2002, 09:34 PM provin grounds is another 1 i would like to try!
rockbiter 08-28-2002, 10:11 PM hey guys... man I finally got my front arb repaired and back in... i was almost to the point of giving it to my wife for a flower pot... jeesh.. anyway.... we will meet Friday (13th), Sat. (14th) and sun (15th) at 8 am at the market.... if you can make it, show up...here is my cell number for all who want it... 806-632-4637.. my name is Harlan.... also, if you want to discuss in more detail about anything give me a call, home number is 806-797-6423.... my group will be leaving for moab the thursday the 11th at about 5 am.... heading out from Lubbock, TX.... so anyone want to meet up along the way.. you are more than welcome to caravan...
so this should be one hell of a time I am hoping....
damn, we have had alot of posts... i hope there is a good turnout...
so to you who have been up there before....whats the baddest run up there.... not saying i am going to run it just yet, but curious...
also, tech question for you slick rock runners..... i was thinking of leaving my 39.5 boggers in the rear and running my 39.5 TSL's in the front.... what ya think.. that set up or Boggers at all 4 corners...
rockbiter 08-28-2002, 10:14 PM also, if you know anyone looking for a driverside RC HP Dana 60 out of a F350, I have one left and could bring it up to the area if someone wanted it.... i will let it go for a 1000..might take less if your not an ass..... its in really good shape... i wont need it since i am running a chevy one.... let me know....
2stroke 08-28-2002, 10:54 PM so who is in?
rockbiter 08-29-2002, 06:15 AM ME :D and a bud with a TJ...
so chalk us down for 2 rigs...
J Kimmel 08-29-2002, 06:17 AM I'll be there. Jimmy we can run upper on saturday:D
2stroke 08-29-2002, 07:13 AM im kinda scared to do upper. i have to drive my truck there and home. 100 miles each way
rockbiter 08-29-2002, 07:15 AM hey 2 stroke, we can get ya home i will have a trailer up there with a winch on the noise... we can haul ya home if worst comes to worst....
2stroke 08-29-2002, 07:20 AM  ;)
2stroke 08-29-2002, 07:23 AM i have a trailer w/ a winch too, but nothing to pull it with
rockbiter 08-29-2002, 07:27 AM talking about getting the cart before the horse....when i had my TJ i was in the same boat you were.... i finally broke down and got it all to trailer my rig after the last episode where i was 3 hours away from home and broke my front axle shaft and popped the bottom ball joint.. so off came the wheel... had to fix it there to drive it home... needless to say , i dont have that TJ anymore....
2stroke 08-29-2002, 07:42 AM i used too work for a guy with a cummins, and could use it whenever. but he couldnt pay me. so i had to quit. so no more truck to pull my trailer!
rockbiter 08-29-2002, 07:43 AM 2stroke, which trail has the big rock gate you have to climb inorder to get on the trail... saw it on a video but dont remember the name...
2stroke 08-29-2002, 07:53 AM upper helldarado?
rockbiter 08-29-2002, 08:18 AM oh boy.... they broke 2 rigs trying to climb into that trail..... looks like fun  so what do you say....:bounce:
2stroke 08-29-2002, 08:24 AM
zukstur 08-29-2002, 08:40 AM entering upper is'nt as hard as it looks if you know the line. Probably the hardest obstical is the third one. I send a pic to 2 strok of my 13 year old son standing next to the rock.
Rockbiter: if you stop by Dove Creek Co on your way to Moab I'll let you borrow my book of moab trails so you can see what you want to run.

Bill Collins 08-29-2002, 01:01 PM hey rick or 2stroke or anyone in the area, the weather channel has been showing some rain in yall's area.how much if any?
also my uncle may bring his 4-wheeler to moab, will he need to get a permit to ride there?thanks...
zukstur 08-29-2002, 01:04 PM i'll send it out it should have been with the others. I have norton antivirus on my computor and it checks everything in or out.
rockbiter 08-29-2002, 01:05 PM hadnt thought about the rain part.... is it wet up there now..if so how much...all i run is a cage with aluminum on top.... no top so what should i expect..... am i going to run in the rain???
Bill Collins 08-29-2002, 01:20 PM my main concern is we will be camping on forest ser.land and fire saftey.but i got a top,but i was gonna take off my doors...
2stroke 08-29-2002, 02:50 PM its raining today, but it never rains here or in moab. pray for the best!
2stroke 08-29-2002, 02:54 PM 3rd obstical
2stroke 08-29-2002, 02:54 PM wow do you go up or down that?
J Kimmel 08-29-2002, 04:18 PM down. It won't be that bad, we can do it just fine. Zukster or anyone else for that matter, what is the best line on the first obsticle for a Toyota? 2stroke I think those first pics (flipped over) aren't Upper Helldorado. It isn't that open, more in a canyon.
zukstur 08-29-2002, 04:41 PM the pics of the roll over are at gip gap north of my house. the start of upper heldarado pic is not the right one. I need a red star but for now i'll send the enterance to 2 stroke.
Bill the mountians over by Durango and teluride have fresh snow on them this after noon.
2stroke 08-29-2002, 04:44 PM kimmel... you run upper before? your going with us right?
2stroke 08-29-2002, 06:52 PM START OF UPPER
2stroke 08-29-2002, 06:53 PM middle
J Kimmel 08-29-2002, 07:55 PM I have not run it yet. Last time to Moab, I couldn't get my winch to function correctly, and its a must for this trail, the exit especially(plus I was still on 35's). Now my winch is working great, got new rope from Rockstomper, and 37" MTR's, so I'd say I'm ready. I'll be there. I figure start on lower, then circle around to upper once we're done and hit that one.
Does anyone have a picture of the exit for Upper Helldorado? I want to see that.

I'll be there if I can drag my ass out of bed. If you're staying at the Canyonlands campground, wake my ass up as you drive by. Look for a roofless ZJ.
I'm down for whatever on Friday. I know most of the 4 rated trails and about half of the 4+. I'm open front and rear but if you guys have a strap I'll try about anything.

BadDog 09-09-2002, 11:03 AM We finished a full size event in Moab a couple of weeks ago. You can find pics of all the Upper obstacles in these galleries. FWIW, my rig is the ghetto buggy with a truck hood (till I can finish the front)...

Greg@RME 09-09-2002, 04:41 PM Cody, whats new?
If anyone still wants info on Upper Helldorado, we ran it over Labor Day. 2 rigs took about 1.5 hrs. It's not that bad..... You just have to have a Winch in the group to pull out at the top. The really hard parts have been getting stacked, so it's pretty much a cake walk. Heres a pic-

BadDog 09-09-2002, 10:48 PM I wish I could go again this soon, but, gotta catch up on real life stuff. Soon though! :D
rockbiter 09-10-2002, 08:16 AM how bad are the local law dawgs there in Moab, I wont have any brake lights working..... hmmm, oh well :flipoff2:
BadDog 09-10-2002, 08:24 AM Hehe, funny you should ask. Here is the text of a post I made about a week or so ago on CK5. BTW, there is a good reason I use Willy as an avatar and SOL as a "title". :D Sorry for the length but it should be worth a laugh.
Here is the (semi) short story. I ran out of time to finish my rig and get it inspected for tags (which I honestly plan to do). But I did get brake lights and most everything I need for AZ street legal done before Moab. But, I figure I can trailer to some trails, and others I can flat tow in/out with a tow bar (thanks Alan for the bar and Marv for the tow offer). So, everyone (and I do mean EVERYONE) with Moab experience kept telling me, (to paraphrase and sum up) “Nobody will bother you in moab, buggies with no tags (and often no lights) run the roads here all the time and the cops don’t bother them. It’s their entire economy so they look the other way.” But, take a look at my “title” and avatar. I chose “SOL” and Willy for a reason! Still, I let popular opinion sway me. On Saturday morning I drove it to the meeting point, getting gas on the way. Gas was filled before my Black Canyon quick-check run so it only needed about 2 gallons to top off. Picked up ice, food, water, etc. and went on to the meeting. I got into the middle of the caravan between Marv and Rob (so no insurance issues and minimal chance of notice). Almost out of town and a patrol car with lights flashing cuts Rob out from behind me and pulls me over. @#%#$, @#$%#%, @@%#$%, and @#%#%!!! Within minutes there were 3 patrol cars there and 4 officers. Always me.
Well, turns out that they weren’t that bent over my no registration, not tag, and no insurance. But the lady at the gas station swore I got 19 gallons of gas and drove off without paying. Luckily I had my receipt and paid by card, but she insisted that I must have pumped twice and got the additional 2 gallons too. Well, I have a small K5 gas tank (23 gallons total?) now so you guys know that driving in and putting in over 21 gallons in is not likely. Anyway, he follows me BACK through town to talk to her and she eventually gives it up. I absolutely refused to pay for it, I didn’t get it and that’s that. The officer was pretty cool about the whole thing really. At the end he said, “You’ve already had a bad morning and all your buddies are waiting so I won’t make it any worse by getting you for the plates and all, so I’m going to let you go on out today. But, I don’t want to see it on the road again after today.” To which my obvious response was, “Thank you sir, no problem sir, thank you very much sir.” bowing and scraping as I backed away. Of course I’m pissed and upset at holding up several guys waiting on me to hook up with the Rusty Nail group so I swear I’ll never go there again. BTW, if I didn’t get a chance to thank all of you that were willing to wait and help me, ***THANKS***.
Day 2. Times running short, my rigs on the trailer, I need gas, and the only convenient station where I could easily fit the tow rig and trailer was, you guessed it… So, I tell myself, “accidents happen, she made a mistake, don’t cause yourself more problems just because of yesterday…” And I pull in to get gas, food, ice, etc. Takes forever to get gas due to a pinched vent line on the tank. After about 3 minutes of pull, pop, wait, pull, pop, wait… the pump just turns off with a notice saying “see attendant inside”. I go inside pissed thinking they are harassing me but she says, sorry, hit the wrong button, just put your credit card in and start over, which I do. About 5 minutes later my buddy from Sat shows up. I chat with him pointing to the rig on the trailer saying, “see, it’s on a trailer”. Figured maybe he just saw me there and stopped to chat some more. He was really pretty cool. Nope, the bitch manager called them. Anyway, he asks if I paid for it I show him both receipts, explaining that they cut the pump off on me. He says he will go in and make sure everything is ok so we don’t have a repeat. My response is, “Please do!” Within minutes, 3 cruisers again. One is a total stereotypical pompass ass POS cop. Must have been a supervisor or something because my buddy and the other guy (also friendly) clamed up. Chest poked out like a Marine drill sergeant, dark shades, and arrogant asinine tone. He takes my receipts, demands everyone present hand over their IDs (Keith and Eric) so he can “get their information” in case he needs to contact them. Then informs me that he is going to pull the tapes and find out if I stole the gas or not, and, if I did, they will be knocking on our doors. I told him to pull them and look at them all he wants, I didn’t take the gas and I won’t be seeing you at my door. At that point I was getting pretty hot, but I kept my mouth mostly shut. Small town Barney Fife could easily ruin the rest of my trip. I did tell him at that point that my friends were waiting and that if there was nothing else I was leaving. Again I say, I’ll never go there again…
Later, talking to Eric and others, we came to the conclusion that my $30 odd dollars of lost business would not even be noticed (obviously) but that by going by again on Monday, we could sure piss them off. So, we did. Spent 30 minutes or so fueling up, taking our time, this time, no cops.
I’m not a thief, I don’t steal, and it was not an accident. There is no way I pumped 21 gallons of gas into my POS. All I can say is I hope that bitch is married to a drunken wife beating homosexual who gives her aids along with his POS fag cop boyfriend. But, I’m all calmed down now, not at all bitter about the experience.
So, there it is. Full disclosure of my rein of terror in Moab …

hey perfect plan on pissing them off by going back instead of avoding them....I do that shit everyday here!!
hey if you guys can't find a place, Moab Offroad has pretty big gravel lot out front you can park all your stuff in....its about 2 miles south from city market...towards Helldo..
not the mose convienent I know but...its what I can think of..OR there is a back street behind citymarket that you could park some single file on...that might work out to.
see ya all saturday..we might go out on a night Fri13th run....I will decide soon and lett you know. I hope all the texas boys don't miss this though they prolly left already
BadDog 09-11-2002, 09:22 PM If your going north of town, there is a Motel 6 on the extreme North side of town. Behind it is a large open field where the hotel directs guests with trailers to park. Plenty of room there and I'll bet they wouldn't even notice as long as you don't draw attention to yourselves... If you use it, the easy way into the field (without jumping a curve) is a gravel road that is less than obvious on the right side as you face it when you pull in.
Plus, all the trails I was on had nice parking accommodations at the trail head, as long as your going out where (or near where) you go in…
rockmutt 09-11-2002, 09:27 PM are all the extreme trails marked? (proving grounds ex.)
