I am planning on running a 700r4 trans in my commando buggy and was wondering how you keep the fluid from cavitating (sucking air) when vertical?

I did a search but found nothing on this subject.

Just a thought, you could remote resevor it and use a secondary feeder pump and filter system........its a thought.:D

Deep pan with an extended pickup. Add a big cooler, and oil filter, and 3/8" cooling lines. You should be able to pick up 3+ extra quarts of capacity.

definetly dont over fill it! it will airate the fluid big time. be just as bad if not worse than cavitating..

on the 32RH in my TJ i ran it 1/2 quart overfilled and it seemed to help alot.

during this buildup i am installing a deep pan, cooler, external oil filter, temp sensor.

hope to not burn another one (3 so far)

On my C4 with a deep pan when it points striaght up for a long time the fluid gets foamed up and starts to come out the breather. After it does this a few times it might be as much as a quart low. With the tranny completely full to the mark on the dipstick I have never had a problem with it not transmitting power to the wheels. Some people make a big can with a valve cover breather as a trans vent. I guess this catches the foaming fluid and it runs back into the trans.

Having a big cooler might helped me out too. I used to have a converted AC condensor or whatever that held 4 quarts as a tranny cooler. Now I just have an aftermarket tranny cooler, and I havent noticed any more problems, but I have only wheeled it that way this summer.

ok I have been wondering about the subject at hand also...

what about the "drysump" type idea above...anyone got more detail.. would simple ducting to the filter/pickup work?

what about some kinda floater system like airplanes use for fuel tanks?

Picture this your vertical having a blast on a rock you suck air and no fluid now the tranny doesn't work you finally get some fluid the tranny starts to work right again and hopefully you don't have your foot in it when it finally grabs because:nuke: you now have a problem. Get a deeper pan and a cooler and you should be alright both are easy to install and don't cost too much. But don't overfill it its designed to run with that much fluid for a reason you'll be in for trouble. Now comes the boogers who say they've been doing it for years with no problems you make your own choice its your rig and you got to fix it when it goes boom.

You could always un one of these:

An extra gallon and no pressure drop should do the trick!

An extra gallon and no pressure drop should do the trick! Pretty sweet but how much does it run? BTW This is why I love manual trannies and it feels more like what it is a piece of machinery not just a go-cart.

With a 700r4 if you get it high enough long enough to cavitate, you have some serious cahonies! I have seen a lot of Ford and Chrysler tansmissions do it but I have NEVER seen a 700r4 or a turbo 350 cavitate. Don't ask me to explane why, I don't know. We run trucks long enough to do the impossible around here, driving up the last water fall on upper heldorado comes to mind (yes it has happened for real). And we do this kind of stuff on a regular basis and never a problem, as long as they are full to begin with. Check these pics out this is real world vertical.

Exactly, I don't see this being something you should have to worry about. I have never had a problem with mine nor have other people I know running GM autos. Just fill it to spec'd capacity, run a cooler(this is a given), and enjoy the wonderful world of automatics:D

YELLER BLAZER, nice pics!
