Look for an 85 EFI. Check the rear frame rails for rust. All the fenders will probably be rotting, make sure the power rear glass works. Any year after that requires an SAS.

if you want v6 and reliable look at the 1996 to current 4runners.
the 3.0L that came in the 4runners from 1987(i believe) to 1995 were terribly slow, no power, and blew head gaskets on a regular basis. The 22re was a fantastic motor that was in the first and second generations. good power for the little bugger and never leave ya stranded.

X2, make sure and get the second-gen V6. Although I'm pretty sure not much beats the 22re in the reliability department.

x3, V6 3.4L Would be nice, Ive beat the heck out of several 22r's and never had a single problem, Dual Case is best if your going to be wheeling,

All years. 85-89 were lighter and have better power-to weight ratio than the heavier 90-95

The 96-00 4Runners or 95.5-current Tacoma have a more powerfull 4 cy.

My friend is looking into getting a '93 with the V6. It has around 6'' of lift and 35s with the IFS still intact. Is that a problem? Also, is the V6 reliable aside from the head gasket issue? How's the gas mileage?

I figured I might as well use this thread since the question is related.

3.slow sucks balls period. If you do anything in the woods 35's an IFS will not end well. Check the idler arm, it most likely will be sloppy but make sure its not about to break/fall apart. They do that.

you'd probably be better over on yotatech asking these sorts of questions (both OP and JollyGreen). But since you're here... I wouldn't worry as much about the 35's and ifs as I would about IFS and 6" of lift. I've yet to see that combo done without having a really questionable suspension setup.

Thanks for the advice. He'll probably go with another truck.
