: Swap questions for new project; 6.0 VS Cummins
adam5432002 02-05-2009, 07:03 PM Allright I was given a 2wd chevy 1976 with AC and all options from factory. Truck was just given to me one day, so I said what the hell lets build something different. I want to stay with a auto trans in it and swap to 4wd. Truck is standered cab long bed. With original motor and trans, AC works and everything.
Now comes the big questions, If stuck on eather doing a 6.0, 5.3 or a Cummins Turbo diesel swap in the truck. Im really motivated for the cummins diesel swap, but am wondering how hard and how much money would be needed to finish this project. My budget it around 8k depending how long im looking at. All work will be done by myself at the shop I work with. I have D60's running around here somewere and wheels and tires so far. I will run my h2 wheels with the 37" Toyo muds. This truck will be used as a daily driver and tow rig for my big truck.
Lil'John 02-05-2009, 07:11 PM Biggest issue to me with the cummins is the sheer weight. I think the number I've heard thrown around was 400-500 pounds more than a SBC.
As for the 5.3 vs 6.0 vortec, I scratched over that and ultimately, I went with the 6.0 due to more power in stock form(aka I don't need to fawk with it and sacrifice longevity to gain more power):shaking: Downside with the 6.0 is the price. Mine was $500 more than the comparable year 5.3L.
adam5432002 02-05-2009, 07:18 PM Im just wondering, if doller for doller the cummins is a better deal to swap in....
montanatrout 02-05-2009, 07:20 PM i say go with the 6.0........less wieght, 300hp-350ish for the torque, bolt it to any chevy trans with no adapter, its a LS-1 factory roller, its bone stock, there is no replacement for displacement. and they sound sweet at 5k
tacoma73 02-05-2009, 08:33 PM I'd go with the 6.0. :D

A cummins 5.9 liter weighs almost 1200# Im converting a 77 chevy from 350/th350/np203 to 5.9 VE engine getrag and dodge divorced np205 on tons and 42s...... if fuel milage and towing power is a factor I would go with the CUMMINS .... IMO

chevyforlife502 02-06-2009, 09:48 AM A 5.9L cummins would be alwsome. But you need to rember the weight factor. For suspension to axles they all need to be swaped
adam5432002 02-09-2009, 05:19 PM What tranny would be good for a cummins? What swap options are open? Looking to stay auto....

Couldn't tell you what is good or what swap options there are on it... but with enough time, money, or expertise(pick two) any thing can be done.
Cheapest and easiest would be just to grab the complete drivetrain(engine, tranny, and tcase if needed) from a donor rig and goto town.
I didn't follow my advise on my 6.0 swap... I've had a few issues as a result:shaking::flipoff2:
LegendKiller89 02-09-2009, 06:53 PM I normally would say go for the Cummins. But I think in your position it would be best to just do the 6.0 and call it good.

545rfe, or as68re if you want an auto, g56 for a manual (or its predecessor, whos name i cant recall, which would be much less espensive).
BIGBLUETURD 02-09-2009, 07:45 PM My buddy has a 5.3 with a pro-charger and that thing just gets it on. He picked up the charger used for $1000 on craigslist. 20 mpg. You can get that with a cummins but you got to fork out the $$$$. Stay with gas it's cheaper.
