: 4.2 questions
nevadayj 08-23-2002, 11:24 AM I did a search on this subject with limited results, so I am trying a new post here. I am looking at options for my 87 YJ on engines and injection. Of course the SBC has been a thought, as well as the 4.0 MPI motor. In talking with JW Jeeps, they suggest using a 91-92 YJ motor and all of the components including the tank (plastic with in-tank pump). The 91-92 are the last years without electronic speedos, etc, from what their tech told me. The problem is they want around $3,200 for the set-up. The concern I have with that is that the engine is still a 10 year old piece. They do chekck compression, etc, but I still don't feel comfortable with the overall cost, age thing.
My thought is to rebuild my 4.2 mildly, no stroker 4.0 setup and add a brand new injection setup. This way I know all of the parts are either new or rebuilt with new parts. Seems to me this is the simplest way to get a fresh motor and the injection that I need.
Any thoughts are aprreciated. I am not going to do a conversion to a V-8, so that is out of the question. Main choice is what injection to use. If I use the Mopar setup, I will be in the project about as much total as buying the old 4.0 from the yard. Still, makes more sense to me than the ten year old 4.0 engine.
Thanks in advance for any feedback. Sorry about such a long post, but I have to get my point across!
Keith Strong 08-23-2002, 12:01 PM Search under my name for a motor swap.....find the link to Jaffers website and his write up about putting a 4.0 head on a 4.2. I think you are right...rebuild your 4.2 and do a 4.0 injection/head swap and you would be very happy
shawnscj 08-23-2002, 08:45 PM I just biult my 4.2, with a 4.0L head (Jaffers site), GM HEI, and if I could afford EFI I would have gone with TBI.
Check this site, www.customefis.com
if you are interested in EFI at agood price.

If you are going to rebuild your 4.2 i would go with the 4.0 head conversion with injection. The 4.0 head has a better flow design and will increase HP.I will be going the same route when I rebuild mine on my 85 CJ.I'm already running the Mopar MPI.I have had the Mopar unit for about 2-3 years with no problems. You can buy the 4.0 head already converted from Hesco or Clifford.
Robert 08-25-2002, 11:06 AM Another option if you want a little cheaper than fuel injection, would be a Motorcraft 2100 carburator. They flow a lot more than the Carter BBD, and are more stable off road.
They can be found at almost any wrecking yard that carries Fords, as Ford used the 2100 on everything during the seventies.
HEI can be had with a GM six cylinder HEI distributor. These can also be found in junk yards.

nevadayj 08-25-2002, 01:32 PM I am leaning towads the 4.0 head swap with the Howell EFI, due to cost, etc. For a trail rig, I think this may be the most practical way to get a fresh motor, decent economy and EFI at the same time.
Looks like the Howell unit is around $1100. I think that the rebuild can be done for around $1200 with the 4.0 head cost included. I looked at Jaffers site and he estimated the cost of the head at about $150. Anybody bought one? How much was it? The machine work will be the same, since the existing 4.2 head is going to need the same work.
Thanks for the feedback so far!:D
Keith Strong 08-25-2002, 07:32 PM Not positive..but I may have one for sale pretty soon ;)
I dont like Howel personnaly, I have had crappy cust serv and I think they are way over priced FWIW.
webjeep 08-25-2002, 08:19 PM I was working on the junkyard tbi swap for my 258 and i called howell the other day looking for an adapter. they said that they dont sell just the adapter, and asked me what all parts i had. I have in my possession the tbi and the ecm, and have access to most of the rest of the parts minus harness and adapter. the guy that i talked to said that they would sell me the entire kit minus the tbi and the ecm (basically a harness, fuel pump, lines, adapter, sensors, ecm chip, manual) for $620 which is more than i was planning on, but i figure i only paid about $100 for the tbi and ecm so i get the whole thing for about $720. no cpmplaints here. though john (customefi.com) will put an entire kit together for you for just barely more than that, but he is backlogged a bit right now. my carter has already been relegated to paperweight.
