I am having trouble locating a SM465. What do you think about this deal from JB conversions??? I think it has everything needed except an adapter plate to the NP231 which he claims is not needed.

It's a brand new NV4500 and a decent price for everything. Be aware there are two versions of adaptors: Internal slave and external slave. After living with an internal slave on my BA10, I'd spend the extra money and get the external slave cylinder setup.

The NV4500 they're supplying is from Dodge and has a 23 (or is it 27? Don't recall) output shaft. The bolt pattern of the 231 will work without an adaptor, but make sure it has the right spline count. I found an NV4500 out of an early Chevy with the 6.34:1 first gear and was doing the HAPPY DANCE until I discovered it wasn't gonna hook up to my stock 231 T case cuz it had a 32 spline output. I had a 241 T case built with a drivers' side drop and got the whole monstrous mass in my Cherokee and I'm very happy with the tranny. 1st gear in hi has a crawl ratio almost as low as my BA10 did in 4 lo.

Bottom line: Love the crawl ratios- love the highway cruising and all with a 4.0, 4.56 gears and 33 or 35 inch tires, depending on the situation. And as long as I keep up on the maintenance, I ain't gonna break it

Not sure on the JB tran.. I bought mine new from Dodge and then bought the converson parts from PARTS MIKE. I have heard that you want to watch out for people selling NVs, because there are supposed to be differn't grade transmissions sold. The grade one go to Chevy and Dodge the noisy or not quite right ones to aftermarket.???????? Don't know if that is true, but I didn't risk it. Love the tranny love the gears.

I never heard that before? Who told you that? Hopefully not the dealer.. Anyway I would think a reptuable company would not sell poorly built trannies?? Hopefully.

Heard it from some of the Jeep folks at one of the SWFDA meetings in N.M. a couple of years ago. The price from Dodge wasn't that bad. Within $20 of the aftermarket..

Even if you get the 27-spline Dodge-output NV4500, you can just get a new input gear for your 231 and install that. It's pretty easy once the case is removed.

I have decided to buy from AA. They offer a 90 day trany warrenty. JB does not offer shit!! I asked him what if it pops out of gear or something. He said well I have never had a returned tranny. I said well ofcourse you have not you do not have a warrenty!!

Dude, you can get AA stuff from ANY AA distributor and still get the warranty. Parts Mike has some of the best prices. If you buy directly from AA, they screw you.

The NV-4500 went through some design changes over the years. Apparently the early versions 92 and 93 had a noisy third gear. They fixed this in later models. No specifics on what they did. They also did away with the 6.32 first gear in the GM units in 94 or 95. Another interesting bit is that only the dodge version had the synchronized reverse gear. Unsure if GM went this route on the newest stuff.

The dodge tailhousing changed in 95. The same cases will bolt to it, but the machined slot in the back to clear the input retainer on the case is shallower. This is only a problem with bolting a Dana 300 to it. JB and Advance have a new input retainer available to get around this without a spacer.

I believe the dodge version has changed to a 29 spline output shaft from the 23 spline that it originally had.

Mine is a early GM version with a dodge tailhousing and output shaft. The dodge tailhousing is also about 2 inches shorter than the GM one which is good for the short wheelbase crowd

AMEN! to that.
A while back, AA and JB bought a whole slug of brand new NV4500's from the factory on a special deal.
The price got down to $1800.00 for the complete kit at one time... about a year and a half ago.
Getting a quote from Parts Mike will probably worth your time.
