when were s10's equipped with 700r4's? and is it possible to adapt a t-case to a 2wd 700r4?

I think they went from a 207 to the 231 around '88

The 2WD and 4WD trannies have different length output shafts. To change them, you have to tear the whole tranny apart. You need to buy a 4x4 tranny instead.

the s10 700 is weaker than the full size from what I've heard.

It is. Everything about the V-6 and V-8 trannies are the same, but the components inside. If you take a V-6 tranny into any tranny shop, they can build it to handle a V-8. It's all just swapping parts.

The S-10 trannies have (I think) 4 fewer clutch packs than fullsize autos do. There's room for them in there and any rebuild shop should be able to put then in with a rebuild.

Mine went out last week, Today I called the guy that is rebuilding it at Ross Moores in Fort Wayne, Indiana and told him this information that you guys have given me. He said that you two don't know shit about trannys. :flipoff2: (no offence)

He said that there are upgrade parts, but they are unnecessary. He said that the parts that can be upgraded are parts that will never break.

Sorry fellas, not checkin' up on ya, just trying to share some knowledge. ;)

BTW, this place is a very prestigious tranny and gear shop.

Did he tell you if the V6 tranny had as many or less clutches than the V8? Go ask him, then I'll tell you if you need to take your tranny somewhere else, like to someone who knows something;)

He didn't say. He only told me that it wouldn't be of any real gain to swap out stronger parts (like for the 350 tranny). He only said that the parts that are changeable for stronger ones are not the ones that break anyway.

He is full of shit... Does he want me to ship him the fragments of what is left of a tranny that went from a 4.3 to a 350? The V6 tranny will only last for a few months unless you seriously baby it.

If you took him just the tranny... call him back and say that you were wrong... That tranny is for a fullsize truck. I know that I have been wrong before about details, but I've been around too many people doing smallblock swaps in S10's to be wrong about this.

This makes no sence... If they do not break, why do they make stronger ones?:shaking:

I don't know who you guys are talking to but I wouldn't buy a trans from them, the 4.3L S-10 700R4 is the same as a V-8 4x4 model with two less ears for the inspection cover (whoopdy do) a different servo and maybe (can't remember for sure) one less clutch pack. It will survive just fine behind a V-8, and the other servo can be swapped in for better 2nd gear shifts, or you can use the Corvette servo that everyone and their brother uses for even better shifting. During a rebuild the extra clutch pack could be added. 2.8L S-10's with the 700R4 are also the same trans, only with a different bellhousing pattern to match teh 60 degree V6

Me! me! me!

No really, I double checked with my trans guy, and he builds these things all day long for work, then six or more hours a night doing custom shit on the side for all our friends. He's built trannies for drag cars with Nitrous and trans brakes, the TH400 that was in his last Jeep shifted so had it would pick up the front end when it hit 2nd with 35" Swampers on. I've seen him take a total pile of junk and make it work for someone's derby car, and I've seen him build full race trannies with more anodized bling bling parts than most ricers have. I've also seen him pull apart bling bling TCI and JET trannies that didn't work worth a shit and fix the junk that the "experts" screwed up. He know his shit, and he just got done building an ex 4.3L 700R4 and S-10 NP231 for the TBI V8 swap in his YJ, that thing gets it. He said, and I quote "...they just have a different servo that works fine but I usually swap it out for a Corvette one anyway, same as the V8 ones, oh yeah, sometimes they have one less clutch pack, but so do lots of the V8 ones, only the heavy duty ones have the extra pack and it doesn't make much difference anyway..."

Christ on a bicycle! That is a huge ass quote to remember word for word. :flipoff2:

I'm sorry guys, I really don't care anymore. I will take my tranny guy's word for it... When I drop in a 383, I will worry. Then if it breaks, I will break him for being wrong. :D

Gots me a pornographic memory....er....uh....you know what I mean. I actually just got off the phone with him before I posted that reply. Run it, break it, post pics of the carnage, and remember, one teaspoon of ATF fluid can cover the entire floor of a 24'x24' garage.
