: 1995 4.2 LSE - irregular cut-outs of engine
landybehr 02-11-2009, 10:16 AM Hi,
a friends LSE has a problem with the engine. The engine cuts out during driving. It is sudden "off" and after a time from 1-3sec a sudden "on". This happens at no special driving condition. Engine may be cold or worm. When the engine resumes to work it behaves normally with no backfire, of course the off/on action causes some drivetrain "klonk" but thatīs not the problem here.
Engine has covered about 160,000 miles. No "check engine" light.
Fuel pump has been replaced, amplifier module on distributor has been replaced too. One or two hoses were renewed (like the vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator).
Do you have a clue or hint what to check ?
transientmechanic 02-11-2009, 11:44 AM Condition of the distributor cap/rotor? When was the fuel filter most recently replaced?

I dont know if it applies to your year/model, just trying to help.
"Blocked Vacuum Relief/Rollover Valve: Another common reason for failure is a blocked vacuum relief/rollover valve in the evaporation tank in the rear quarter panel. The vacuum buildup causes the tank to collapse and crush the fuel pump. Initial symptoms are often a temporary cutout of the engine at high speed, progressing to a permanent failure. Loosening the gas cap to relieve the vacuum can often get you home in this case. "
PTSchram 02-11-2009, 03:15 PM Sounds like a classic case of failing vehicle speed sensor.
The '95s are much less likely to suffer from the failure of the ignition switch that can cause the same sort of problems.
landybehr 02-12-2009, 05:33 AM thanks yall so far.
cut-outs are are all sort of engine speeds so Iīd be inclined to exclude the vacuum thing but as it is so easy to try and drive with the filler cap loosened heīll try it.
Fortunately I have a spare VSS to send him.
Hope thatīs the culprit.
A local garage meanwhile said the AMM would be it and they couldnīt test it (which is ok) and theyīd replace it for trial (which is quite much $$ for not being sure) nor do I think that behaviour is typical for a faulty AMM.
Iīll be back when the VSS is replaced !!!
knudsen 02-13-2009, 07:21 AM Check Alpha's link, they have instructions on the throttle position pot too. Not sure if that causes surging or death, but it fails a lot. That entire website is required reading! Check the RRC forum there and find a post by Ramon. He's got a link in his siggy to some model airplane site with great RV8 info. PM or bump this if you want me to post it later. I think the fuel pump and it's wiring is hte most common cause. I just put a free Jeep WJ pump in mine :D:evil:

you mean this link, lots of good info but take into account its mostly about mid to late 80's rover stuff

knudsen 02-13-2009, 08:56 AM Not hte exact engine as in the rover, but the theory and troubleshooting is the same, and you get smarter by reading it:

knudsen 02-13-2009, 08:57 AM Oops, ya that's it.

landybehr 02-16-2009, 06:09 AM Hi there,
I sent a spare VSS to my friend.
But before he had a chance to put it in he had already changed the TPS and AMM for used ones.
One of these items must have been faulty as the cut out is away since.
He also reports that the car runs a little better than before (maybe the AMM was "degraded"?).
So big thanks for the help ! Even though the LSE fooled all of us :)

Happens all the time with internet diagnosis.
Glad he got it going, I'm thinking it's probably the TPS as they can cause all sorts of goofy problems.
