Surprisingly his shit holds up pretty good. Just a new actuator ever other ride. I however could not keep my shit together with the cognito. But my right foot is mighty heavy on the stupid petal.

I went with an upgrade actuator available from Chevrolet on my '95 Z71. There's also a cable setup available from an aftermarket vendor but I remember where I found that.

How did Chevy ever come up with the thermo-linear actuator. :shaking:

i have a electronic actuator.... i have it engaged and i un plugged it so it just stays locked in all the time..... i dont drive it much on the road... so it dont matter about the front d shaft turnin

the ifs is holding up well in 189k miles i've only changed 1 lower balljoint.... i do have a cv boot that i can tell its about to bust... but other than that nothing major.... i am thinkin about wheeling ifs as long as i can and see what kind of abuse it will handle... i am thinkin about going with some 40 ltbs next

besides still having the ifs, why havent you at least upgraded the easiest thing to do.....that damn 10 bolt rear

kymudhunter
08-31-2009, 08:56 PM
because he hasn't broken it yet. Don't let what everyone says get to you. A 1/2 ton chevy in the mud will live alot longer then one on the rubicon. But from a real cheap wheeler, to another, it's not a bad idea to go ahead and locate a stronger rear axel. and I wouldn't put much money into the IFS. It will hold up for awhile, and you should wheel the piss out of it while it does, but eventually it is just going to fail, masivly. and you will wish that you did the SAS sooner. But until you can aford it, keep doing what your doing. and it looks like a great place to wheel, My kinda style anyway.

i am currently in the process of putting together a 14ff with machined 6 lug hubs with 4.88s and a detroit locker...

next step will be to swap in a 60 front and 8 lug hubs on the 14 after the ifs has had complete destruction

Build as you can afford man, to many people go and stick themselves into alot of debt to make a decent rig instead of just doing it when they can afford it.

Is it a kit or did you do it yourself?

X2 and do you have enough room between the hub and the lug nuts to get a socket in there?? Looks tight

Well, you'd have to plug/fill at least two of the 8on6.5 holes (the way Bryan's are the other six holes were tapped for the bolts that hold the rotor on to the hub), then you have to turn down the OD of the hub to fit inside the hub hole on a 6on5.5 wheel (IIRC it's just over 4.0625"), then mark and drill the 6on5.5 pattern, install studs and you wont have much more to do with the hubs. Then you have to turn down the OD of the flange on the axle shaft itself unless you want to remove the shaft each time you want to take the wheel off, and still after that you need some socket head cap screws (allen head bolts) to clear the wheel and sometimes a little grinding will still be needed. Then there is the brake debacle, whether you want a parking or emergency brake.

Josh.. I was going to take them out but my spring pins needed to be replaced and I didnt have any and didnt want to drive 30 miles to go buy bolts.

when I do the shackle flip I will go to a metal shim in what ever angle i need.

I am not sure yet what axle I will run.. I guess what ever I find the best deal on. If I get a chevy 60 i will run a np241 on my 60e untill i destroy it then swap in a turbo 400/205. I am starting to shy away from mud and get into the trails.
