The recommended fluid is 90W for the birfields. Can I use Molyslip grease? I can only think that it has to be better. Or will this affect my winter use? ie. to thick for the bearings.

Warning Warning
Do not use 90W !
Use grease to pack the birf, you have axle seals right behind the birf to keep the 90W where it belongs which is in the diff.
Where does it say to use 90W, who recomends it ?

I think it's time to get a chiltons or a factory manual

part guy at parts store!

anyways, when lubing-with grease- the birfield, how do you determine when you have put in enough? Sorry, newbie question I am sure.

To much is just right. Pack birfield full and then add somemore.

Pack the birf and the entire knuckle cavity with Hi Temp grease.

I'd use 90w only if you're concerned about theft... you could follow the drips to your 40 if it was stolen.. :flipoff2:

Like was said...grease that sucker full, then add a bit more.

When you find a parts guy with a few brain cells, ask him for a front axle seal kit (axle seal, steering knuckle seals, gaskets, etc). Once you're in far enough to repack the birf, you might as well do this service or the new grease will be in your drive a few months out.

Manual indicates fill the cavity 2/3 with moly fortified grease. Leave the gear lube for your Land Rover. I'd be surprised if any parts counter will have a front axle gasket kit and axle seal other than the usual Cruiser shops.

I usually pack the knuckle a little with grease, pack the birfield and install it, then finish the 2/3 fill.

Aftermarket seals suck. You can use the gaskets and bearings in the Oz kit that MAF sells, but replace the axle seals with OEM. Otherwise you'll be back in there shortly.
