out of rectangular tubing, did most of you cut and weld the frame bends or did you bend them?

if you cut them, how did you brace them? (obviously want to retain strength)

did you go off of the originial frame pattern? (for whatever vehicle it was?)

thanks -

- and yes, i searched a lot...

cutting and rewelding is actually the strongest method..

thanks

I am in the process of building one out of 2x4x1/8.
I am just cutting and welding and will be bracing the inside of the frame with 1/8 plates. I started to copy a toyota frame and then just went with my own design. Alot cooler and easier.

I built mine off of a jeep frame but wider to accomodate 60's
mine is 2x 4x .188 and I cut and stacked the joints and then reinforced them as shown in the pic, but that's cuz I'm dumb and build stuff too heavy.
go checkout the frame build up in the toyota section and copy that
very clean and funtional

well im not sure if this will helps for your application, but im using 1.5" .120 wall box for my frame and its its just cut and welded at the bends. No overlaps, i just did equale cuts on each half to keep the seam even. With the full cage im dont see it being a problem, if it bends ill fix it...

kinda shows what im doin...

Go look in the Toyota section like fcfred said. There is a good thread showing a really, really clean frame build up.

yeah, i saw the toyota section write up...looks nice but theres no info on the making of the actual frame, mostly just the rest of the buggy.

i mainly just wanted to know if there was any specific kinda bracing/reinforcing that was needed/recommended...

I have a Jeep FC 170 frame that i'm going to narrow (it's wider in the rear) and shorten to build a short wheelbase buggy /w 2.5T axles. Gonna go for hotrot look and need the pickups to be neat :)

Here's on my inspiration btw (BIG pictures):

I'm thinking with the thicker metal and bigger U-profile i'm not going to have to box it. Compared to a CJ-frame laying next to it it's pretty much sturdier.

Gonna go with: Cut partially / Bend/ Reweld with some bracing where i see fit.
