: PBB shotgun school. Clays - "Field" v "Sport" ???
LOPPY 02-13-2009, 11:02 AM Without getting into a Timmay "aim" v "point" vomit contest... I'm serious. Some buds and I are getting into clays, tons o fun, and we quickly found out that our pump field guns turned our shoulders into hamburger post haste.
So one dood's dad hands him down a 40's Browning, scrollwork, priceless... yes, we hate him. Fawkyou Ken. :flipoff2:
After just enough education to hurt ourselves, Sport setup is best for clays as it's setup for more vision and a rising target and all that... Right?
My question is, I found a killer deal through a friend on a brand new Stoeger Condor (damn near free) but it looks like a field setup. Is this really a problem? Do I really NEED to have a sport setup? I was thinking, just shoot the fuker, get used to it, and if I'm having fun and smoking birds, WTF does it matter?
gunsablazin 02-13-2009, 11:07 AM Runaway from the Stoger, have two of them , problems with both. Neither one works reliably.
LOPPY 02-13-2009, 11:40 AM Well, that's not what I wanted to hear...
sawzallsammy 02-13-2009, 03:15 PM I have a stoeger 2000 that wont cycle the cheaper sporting clay shells. kinda pisses me off. I wouldn't buy another one
another Lance 02-13-2009, 04:19 PM doesn't matter what kind of shotty you use to shoot clays with, as long as you are having fun doing it. I use my Saiga 12, and my remington 1100. some guys choose to have separate dedicated guns for skeet, trap, sporting, and different ones for hunting. just remember if you aren't having fun, you might as well be doing something else with your time.
Blue Chip 02-13-2009, 04:50 PM For years I used a pump for sporting clays, trap and skeet. I got decent at shooting it - 46 - 48 / 50. I switched over to a Browning Sporting Clay edition over/under... It took me almost a year to get back to the scores that I was getting. Then I got a Weatherby Athena.... same deal.
Moral of the story... take what you have, take what works, and lear your gun.
Lowest score buys beers after. Make sure that guy isn't you.
Keith Strong 02-13-2009, 07:24 PM Runaway from the Stoger, have two of them , problems with both. Neither one works reliably.

I will give you each $50 per gun sight unseen :flipoff2:
Jeff...get it, if it sucks I will trade you something for it. The deal is too good.
Todd W 02-13-2009, 07:32 PM I use my M4 for clays... have shot 100s with it, super fun...
Did this help you :flipoff2:
toy86 02-13-2009, 10:52 PM the gun you shoot best with will be the gun that fits you best and you are the most comfortable with, same goes for the shells your shooting
Halogrinder 02-14-2009, 08:26 AM i have shot skeet w/ my single break action, holding a shell in my teeth.... its HARD!
i have shot with my 870 express.
i have shot with my bastardized attention whore'ed saiga.
all are fun! it just depends on my mood when i go out there.
i like the saiga the most, since its autoloader and the semi action kills the recoil... plus its an attention whore :D
crtbc 02-14-2009, 11:34 AM I like to shoot clays and skeet with my pimped 18 inch pump.... everyone comes over and say "you cant use that with clays" and then they see I routinely hit 20-23/25:flipoff2:
Sometimes for shitz and giggles.. I will use the pistol grip only, no shoulder stock... then it gets funny (think terminator 2 with arnie's 1887 winchester)
MuddyV8YJ 02-14-2009, 03:19 PM i use a winchester 1300 pump. works well enough to get 45+/50
currupt4130 02-14-2009, 03:45 PM Benelli Montefeltro, 22-24/25

x1001
The 3 I owned got sent back 2 times each & took 2 yrs to get results.
2 were SxS combos and 1 the Condor 0/U.
They finally gave me new replacement guns & I sold them....Stoeger + JUNK...dont waste time with them at all, not worth the headache.
tigerxj 02-14-2009, 05:53 PM I shoot clays with a Remington Model 48, 20 gauge, that was manufactured in 1965, if I recall correctly, so that gun predates me by 20 years. It is completely reliable, holds 4+1, swings real nice. It is recoil action, so it kicks a little harder for a 20 gauge than gas would. I hit pretty decently with it, but I suck at the ones that cross in front of you. I just cant seem to get it through my head to lead them properly.
Rattlecan 02-15-2009, 03:38 PM My wife just bought me a Stoeger Condor for my birthday (Friday). Took it to the range and patterned it... both barrels are right on.
Shot trap and skeet with it... I think I put 200 shells down range Saturday without a problem.
I've been shooting a Winchester 1300 for some time now and find both guns work good for trap... but I prefer the quicker pointing O/U for skeet.
Like others have said... Find a gun that works for you, that fits you well and run it.
To get rid of the sore shoulder syndrome purchase a good shooting vest. The leather butt pad is nice for long days of shooting... But I think building up a tolerance is also key.
