Thanks but I'm looking for something beyond a shop vac. Doing it now and its not enough. I'm using the large cab. from HF.
These collector systems are priced from 200 to 500. I don't mind spending more but I need to have some idea of what to look for and what works.

a wood shop dust collector for a blast cabinet sucker. that sounds like a good idea. i bet if you keep checking craigslist you can find a used one.

What type of media are you using? Plain sand, silica sand, glass beads, coal slag etc. etc.

I have used all of the above and so far the coal slag seems to be the best as far as the dust level is concered. Now granted I do have a very fine screen that I use to sieve the media through evey now and then.

This:

When using the shop-vac, what type of filters or bags were you using?

I would recommend using a good drywall dust filter bag.

This is the set-up that I use. It works well and the vac is small enough that it fits under the blast cabinet.

I really want to try one of these (http://www.grizzly.com/products/5-Gallon-Dust-Collection-Cyclone-Separator/G6102):

http://www.grizzly.com/images/pics/jpeg288/g/g6102.jpg

It says it does sand, and is cheap enough to give it a try. I figure with that separator and the shop vac to catch anything it doesn't get might do pretty good.

I am using one of these (http://www.tptools.com/p/2324,52_Vac-36-Vacuum-System.html) that I have vented outside with one of these kits (http://www.tptools.com/p/199,15_Vac-Exhaust-Kit.html).

It works well for the amount that I do with it, but if I really used the cabinet more often I'd step up to one of these (http://www.tptools.com/p/39,52_176-DC-Insider-Dust-Collector.html).

That is adequate for sawdust, but for the much finer dust from sandblasting it won't help.

Aluminum oxide is my media.
There are some like your second choice on ebay.
How often do you use yours now ? I use mine for 1-2 hrs every week. My biggest thing is the mess it makes, (with the shop vac) I'd like to clean it up a lot more than it is

My use is about the same as yours when I'm busy. Then it sits for a month or two while I'm on other projects.

The one I have is fine, but I would spring for the exhaust kit (or cobble one yourself) to get the last of the fine dust vented rather than into the shop space.

The main issue is that the dust will eventually kill the motor. TP Tools offers a replacement. But if you're using it several hours or more every week you'll burn it up that much faster and would be better off springing for the higher grade one.

Just wondering if anyone has used these at higher altitudes? My dad has one at approx. 8000 ft. and it doesn't work real well. Any ideas?

The pic with the blue tank is a cyclone, I have never used one, but those that use them swear by them. For woodworking it is close to being the cats ass. 300 skins on CL in chitown

The orange thing is a commercial filter for a huge commercial blasting cabinet that I bought last fall but haven't fooled around with yet. It uses fiberglass filters in the 2 orange cans. I am not entirely sold on it but will find out in a couple of months.
