: 01 Dodge 1500 conversion for pass side drop?
PBZ Eric 02-15-2009, 05:11 PM I have an 01 Dodge Ram 1500 short bed, reg cab with the 5.2. I think the case is a NV 231 HD and I want to convert this truck over to some axles I have. A corp 14 bolt and a GM d-60. Both axles are heavily built with gears, lockers and chromo shafts. Anyone know what theyre doin on a pass side drop on these trucks?
Bajabomber87 02-15-2009, 05:35 PM Hmm passenger side transfer case
PBZ Eric 02-15-2009, 05:44 PM right, but what pass drop case that's gonna bolt right up to that dodge 5 speed?
Elwenil 02-15-2009, 05:47 PM If it's 23 spline, I think just about any NP205, NP208 or NP241 will bolt up.
varsis 02-15-2009, 05:48 PM do what the jeep guys do. 205 with a doubler and 300? I think thats what many of them do. (They also flip the d300.) but keep it on the passenger side.
Bajabomber87 02-15-2009, 05:51 PM right, but what pass drop case that's gonna bolt right up to that dodge 5 speed?
Well you didnt mention what tranny it has, isnt yours a 29 spline?
PBZ Eric 02-15-2009, 06:07 PM I have no idea what the spline count is I've never cracked the case off. The case is a nv 231 hd thats all I know
Elwenil 02-15-2009, 06:16 PM If it's a NV231, and it's original to the truck, it should be 23 spline.
PBZ Eric 02-15-2009, 06:18 PM so is that gonna make it easy hunting down a new case?
you can convert over, but how will the clearance on your oil pan be?
Elwenil 02-15-2009, 06:41 PM Shouldn't be much different than on a W series truck. The oil pans are not shaped any different and the axle is in pretty much the same location in relation to the engine.
Mr. Mindless 02-16-2009, 07:10 AM transfer case and exhaust should be about all that's needed. I've seen some weird bolt patterns on a chevy 231, the dodge should be the usual 6 bolt round. Make sure the chevy or early dodge case you get for the swap is a match on that as well. If you said what trans you had I missed it, I'd expect you'll need one from the same type (auto/manual) since the input shaft lengths should differ.
If you want to put a manual case behind your auto trans I happen to have a clocking ring that will allow you do to make up for the longer tcase input length. LMK if you need it, I'd make you a good deal :)
(Varsis, what the hell kind of gibbrish was that? a flipped 300 behind a 205? 203s are the ones with the range box, and a 300 is passenger drop already www.novak-adapt.com read and learn)
a 300 may actually be a good option.... I don't know how the input length would work out though.
mondtster 02-16-2009, 05:54 PM If it's 23 spline, I think just about any NP205, NP208 or NP241 will bolt up.
x2.
Anything with the common round "new process" style bolt pattern will bolt up. The worst that could happen would be that you might need a clocking ring (or redrill the tranny flange if that is a possibility) and need a different input with the correct spline count.
Elwenil touched on all the Dodge options, but you might take a look at some Jeep options out there too like the d300.
Well you didnt mention what tranny it has, isnt yours a 29 spline?
IIRC, the 1/2t pickups used the nv3550 5 speed. It should have a 23 spline output. AFIK, only the nv4500s had the 29 spline output.

lucky bastards :flipoff2: would be so simple to swap 4500's if they were like that.
PBZ Eric 02-16-2009, 06:32 PM What do you guys suppose the best case would be. I'm lookin at cheapness too, and the low range. The axles have 4.56's and sit on 38.5 TSL SX's. No rockcrawlin, typical alaska terrain which is a mix of mud, dirt, snow, sand and gravel
