All joking aside, I am pretty much done. I have to get the roof on and put on limit straps, but the shakedown this weekend went really well. The suspension handles the whoops very well. Much better than expected. It corners like ass. Crazy sway. I am putting on a swaybar this week (thanks Aaron).
I have to say a HUGE THANK YOU TO Keith at Rovertracks. I mean this, I could not have been ready without your help.
Anybody who is even considering upgrading to something stout who doesn't buy from him, is nuts. Seriously.
Big thanks to Eddie at West Coast Rovers. Thank you for your help and friendship. Means a lot.
Another big thank you to Lance at PSC. If I was Lance, I would have punched me in the face by now. Instead, he sends me two new PS pumps Next Day air and a new orbital. Thats after talking to me on Saturday for an hour. Nobody does that. Other than Keith!
Thanks to Spidertrax for the front end. It's nice having another inch and change of diff clearance.
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd299/buckon35s/IMG_1820.jpg
Thank you also to Banks. Their EGT guage is much better than VDO. Really. I would recommend them over VDO any day.
Thanks to DJ Safety. The harnesses rock. They work too well actually. I can't reach the dash!
And last but not least at all, Thank you Jim at JE REEL. Shafts don't get any better than this. They really don't. Fits right the first time, tons of slip. And they DO NOT BIND at all with 11in of downtravel. Thats badass. Thank you!
PTSchram 02-15-2009, 05:42 PM Best of luck!
Be safe and make us all proud.
Buckon37s 02-15-2009, 05:48 PM Just a couple more. One with the STIG!

And one just because. So, anybody thinking that using boxed 1/8 steel to save weight, is a good idea. It isn't. :(
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd299/buckon35s/IMG_1824.jpg
This is after we got a little lost, and ran the hardest line I have ever seen on sledge. Fell 3-4 feet straight down on it. Oh well, at least I got that initial cheery poppin damage out of the way so I won't care so much later.
the race should be fun. I appreciate everyone here who has given me advice and help. It should be good to meet some new people come race day!
BTW: The wheels will turn out to be a problem. Running enough pressure in the desert makes them gripless on the rocks. Running too little pressure makes them very susceptable to big time damage when I am going after it. I wish that I had gotten set up like I needed to. But, I ran out of money. Oh well. Can't have everything!
mightymg1 02-15-2009, 05:54 PM DOOOOOD! Looks great! a top ten would rock! BRing it home!!
Did you figure out that GPS?

Not really! I had it out there but the big unknown is the download and follow. Thank you for that though! I am sure it will work. There will be plenty of people ahead of us to follow anyway.
knudsen 02-15-2009, 06:07 PM That thing screams BADASS!
DiscoDino 02-15-2009, 09:48 PM Buck - definitely THE most souped up Rover for the stuff we do (or want to do :flipoff2:).
Good luck, enjoy it, be safe to wheel more...and haul ass!
Cheers,
Nadim

Thanks everyone!! Pray for a finish, thats all I'm shooting for!
Its frekin cold! But I am a wussified cali guy now. I've been living here long enough to pluck my eyebrows and think 50 is cold. It was mid 30's when I got to the lake bed about 8:30am. Look for it to dip into the teens at night while you are here. Best to dress warm.
StinkBug 02-16-2009, 02:32 AM Lookin great David. Glad to hear that the testing is goin well. See you out there!
Michele 02-16-2009, 02:34 AM Hey David,
you should have painted that axle :p
Truck looks a million $$$.
I bow to the brave who brings the little 300 Tdi against the big dogs!
I look forward to seeing you to give them hell!
Sounds a lot like Herbie at the Montecarlo Rally :D
darkstar 02-16-2009, 04:41 AM Dude he just compared your 90 to Herbie The Love Bug!!!!
Freakin' awesome! Good luck!!
Michele 02-16-2009, 04:52 AM Herbie won the Rally Alex!

You thinking it's rim diameter? Or the tires themselves? Those radials or bias plies?
Junkyddog11 02-16-2009, 06:10 AM That's Bucked up!
Have fun man.....good luck .....blow some smoke.
Jtisdale 02-16-2009, 06:15 AM glad you got it sorted before the race! What's with the mud, we are coming 3000 miles to get away from that! See you in a few days.

revor 02-16-2009, 06:33 AM Just Awesome Dave!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You need a white suit to wear, you'd look like the Stig!
Now go have some fun with it!!!
I think Herbie the Rock Bug is going to be at the race, come to think of it that motor is only .35L bigger than yours and yours is a Diesel!
muskyman 02-16-2009, 11:09 AM whats leaking on the right rear tire?
great looking truck for sure!!
cool to hear that the suspension is working well in the fast stuff, these KOH trucks are really a cool new aspect of the off road world.
Aaron871 02-16-2009, 11:30 AM Holy cow Dave... will they allow a 1/2 helmet so that you can see? I mean it's a definite improvement on your looks (put it back on for the interview for sure).... but I wouldn't be able to see crap with that thing on....
Aaron871 02-16-2009, 11:31 AM whats leaking on the right rear tire?
Most likely the "Co-Driver" threw up.....
rock90 02-16-2009, 02:48 PM What is the part hanging off the rear Diff?
how much does it weigh?
thanks
Ed
Buckon37s 02-16-2009, 04:42 PM Whoa. Thats everyone. This is going to be fun, no doubt.
You thinking it's rim diameter? Or the tires themselves? Those radials or bias plies?
Rim type more than anything. They are 15in but the tire is stiff enough not to roll so bad. I mean, my suspension rolls so bad that the tire could never make a difference. :flipoff2: What sucks is the weakness of the lip. I have to run a decent psi for the desert because if you hit stuff fully getting it, it is easy to damage the rim really bad. Like goodnight bad. It's never mattered to me before because I never had to worry about it going slow, even throttling it, who cares. But this is different. BUT, when I run the higher pressure I struggle for grip in the rocks. I slid off the rock and damaged my side because of the high air pressure. I can't run beadlocks with them being reverse mounted. I need a better setup but it is what it is.
glad you got it sorted before the race! What's with the mud, we are coming 3000 miles to get away from that! See you in a few days.
Looks good man.
The lake bed is very muddy. Have fun with that! :flipoff2:
Holy cow Dave... will they allow a 1/2 helmet so that you can see? I mean it's a definite improvement on your looks (put it back on for the interview for sure).... but I wouldn't be able to see crap with that thing on....
The helmet isn't even the bad part. With those safety nets you can't stick your head out the window and you can't see a damn thing. Seriously. Dropping into sledge was like the log ride at disneyland. There could have been a briar patch down there for all I knew. Thats with better visibility than most any front engined hooded truck.
What is the part hanging off the rear Diff?
how much does it weigh?
thanks
Ed
My rear suckdown winch. I don't know how much the rope weighs. Maybe a half pound?
:flipoff2:
Buckon37s 02-16-2009, 04:53 PM Most likely the "Co-Driver" threw up.....
Naw. 4,000 dollar diff fluid. That was before I replaced the seal though.

Rainy as hell at the Hammers, that's what the mud is all about. Drove through on my way to BAP, full kill snow the whole drive. Weather should be interesting.
FrankenRover 02-16-2009, 08:18 PM Looks great Dave.
Can't wait to see some action shots.
One criticism though - ditch the expanded steel on the doors. Looks ghetto on an otherwise great looking rig.
edit.
You runnin' Staun beadlocks? If not, then where are your beadlocks?

The expanded steel and safety nets are only there to meet the safety requirements for KOH. They are very strict this year.
I have no beadlocks. My wheel sponsor fell through. And I can't do weldons, the wheels are reversed. Popping beads are not much issue, the high psi on the rocks are though, like I mentioned earlier.
This reminds me, I have a nice set of weldon beadlocks already painted for sale if anybody needs them. :flipoff2:
Edit: I'm still waiting to Tis to offer me his wheels and tires for the race. Not sure when he will do it...................
TuffD90 02-16-2009, 08:54 PM David the car looks great! You have come a long way!!! Leave the expanded metal if it saves your ass it's worth it. I know you will do great. Remember to drive smart! If you don't finish you can't win and never give up! If you beat me though I will have to hunt you down and kick yourASS!
colorover 02-17-2009, 12:36 PM That rig looks NIIIIIICE! Best of look in the race, I can't wait to see it in action. Hopefully we'll get to meet up for a beer afterward. Is it really getting into the teens at night? I'm renting an RV and I don't know dick about them, but do you have to worry about water lines freezing and such?
Brendon

Thanks all!
You bet it gets very cold on the lake bed. This time of year it can be mild but can also get into the single digits. You will have to worry about the water lines freezing. Mine froze solid last year. You need to set up a drip on the outer valve of the fresh water tank. Thats all.
Aaron871 02-17-2009, 04:03 PM Hey, I sent that junk.... it will be there Friday...

You had a chance until this quote...

If you need us to distract the guys at the BFG trailer for a few minutes while you lift some tires, just let us know!

I am going to come cheer you on. And watch Tiz tear up his buggy. And hope for scantily clad women. Is toughD90 wearing a bikini for the race. It would be very intimidating to the other drivers.
Roxtar 02-18-2009, 10:26 AM Good luck, rig looks great.

You can use my wheels and tires...but only if I can drive! I would offer to hang off your hood and tell you which way to steer but I separated my shoulder in a spectacular mountain bike wreck on Friday.
I hope you can stick around for a few days afterwards and wheel.

A fire retarding bikini. Glad you can make it. Now you can do work on my motor!

No deal! It took a lot to get into this race, not giving up the captain seat for anything. I hope your okay! I'll be there through sunday to hang out with you guys and wheel. But I will be amazed if my rig is up to it. I think the fall out rate on this race will be 60% I'm sure I can bum a ride with someone.
transientmechanic 02-18-2009, 06:58 PM I'm curious, with those aux lights mounted behind the grill and what looks like a tranny cooler, what are you running for an intercooler? Factory?

PS cooler. I'm running a twisted performance direct replacement intercooler. I think its a piece of crap though.

Devil Dog 02-21-2009, 08:50 PM alright today dave got his sway bar installed... this was from a friend of ours in north carolina, Aaron871 sent this set up to us, you can find a post of it in general4x4, it was a very easy install and it came really clean looking and i didn't find one 20 dollar bill wrapped around anything like those currie setups..
it's basically a torsion bar from an ifs truck, i think this is from a toyota, but i could be wrong..

Buckon37s 02-22-2009, 07:39 PM what banks part do you have on that 300tdi?
Engine help, and an EGT guage. thay have been invaluable to me.
That looks great, does he sell that in a kit, I need one also!
No kit, I just fabbed it. I have an extra set of the bushings. The torsion bar and brackets come from an 88 toyota truck. Aaron sent the parts to me. Everything all together was about $80n parts. Beats a $400 one in my opinion.
mightymg1 02-23-2009, 04:43 AM Yeah no kidding! That looks great! Tear it up this weekend!
