Yea, I searched.....

Since my HF 2000lbs engine stand decided to break, and drop my 12V Cummins onto the shop floor while turning the motor over, I am throwing it in the scrap heep for a new one.

Any recommendations on a good engine stand, that will actually hold 2k lbs? The thing that really pisses me off is that there was no head and no pump on this motor, so it shouldnt have even been 900lbs at most. So much for 2,000 lbs capacity. At least no one got hurt when it decided to let go.

So what are you guys using for a HD engine stand?

Holy shit. And there isn't one that I would personally trust to hold a ctd with head/geartrain in place. Build one out of some 2x2x.25 or larger square tubing.

Your better off making one, be cheaper! I broke a 1000# with IH 345 engine.

Hit up local auctions to try to find one like the one above...a Ford dealer I used to work at had a huge Rotunda stand that was rated at 4000 lbs, and could fit anytihng from a 1.9L Escort motor to a Cat diesel. Rotated the engine 360 degrees. Your better and cheaper bet would be to make one...I've seen one that used a Bronco II transfer case with a hand crank welded to the input shaft.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I will definitely keep an eye out at auctions, especially since Spring time is coming and everyone drags there junk out.... Hopefully I can borrow a heavy duty one from a friend to get the 12V back together, then there wont be such a rush to find one....

Did anything happen to the 12V? Any damage?

i had a bad ass one for servicing kubota diesels, ask a diesel shop or bobcat shop/tractor shop they should be able to help you locate one.

I'd scourer e-bay and craigslist you might be able to find a used one for a reasonable price. I think you still may be better off building your own as others have said.

The fan is bent to hell, but thats no big deal. They are cheap enough on Ebay..... I have not had a chance to look the motor over very closely yet, but I certainly will before it goes back together. I just hope the front gear case and block are ok.

I will post a picture later today of the stand failure....

Even a heavy duty 4 leg automotive stand is going to be scary with a 6Bt on it.

Most geared head diesel stands are going to be complete overkill and take up 1/3 of a shop bay's worth of space. (The 8v-92? Detroit on that stand previously posted weighs ~4500 lbs, A 6Bt weighs about 1/4 of that)

It's going to be a tough to find a suitable stand because your 6Bt falls "in the middle". You won't find many used big diesel engine stands because the vast majority of Class 6,7,8 diesels are rebuilt in-chassis ("big" truck diesel engines almost all use wet liners - no need to remove engine unless the block's been damaged).

I think your best bet is to start with the heaviest duty automotive stand you can find, or build your own.

Here's a Hein-Werner 3 ton that would be about right.

Did you have the engine side mounted? I've seen the 2k stands work fine when used that way.

What did you use for a hoist?...I'm a little scared of using a 2 ton hoist to pull it with.

Get a Matco geared head engine stand, make an adaptor to bolt the stand to the side of the motor insted of the end, problem solved. Truck stands all bolt to the sides. Exhaust side on a 6bt only has exhaust and oil cooler, should be simple to dress in chassis or on the hoist when you are dropping it in.

When I worked on aircraft, we had a stand that held the engines on both ends, front/rear (it was big enough to hold an Allison 12 cylinder). You might consider a stand that supports both ends, more complex, but in my experience, well worth it.

Ask this guy: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=679161

He used the same engine stand that I have. I think I just got one of the Monday/Friday (or whatever days the chinese use for pre/post weekend days) built ones. After looking at it a little more, the welds were shit, and the cheap ass tubing they used was very thin. I will probably just reweld it, and use 1/4" or 1/2" wall tube for now, and keep my eyes open for a good, used, geared head style engine stand.

Are the "geared" heads (aka ring and pinion) available without the stand?

I'm not sure, but its worth looking into.

Well thanks to this thread I am going to reinforce the crap out of my engine stand. Getting ready to build an old chevy diesel and dont need the stand breaking in half.
It says 1250 Lbs rating but Im suspicious of the rotating part. I will post pics when im done. I have some high strength 1.25in threaded rod A193 B7 grade that im going to run through the rotating part so it cant break and seperate like the one posted above.
