: Getting a 10/22 today. Have a couple questions.

My friend is going to buy me a new 10/22 as a gift/thank you for helping him out a bunch over the last few months.

First question is there any type of break in I need to do. Reading online some people suggest running some CCI higher power ammo first time out to help gun break in a little faster.

Second is, do I need to clean/lube it before I go out for the first time?

I have never owned a new gun only used and would like to start this gun off properly.

No 10/22 experience, but I clean everything I buy new before shooting it. The primary goal of the manufacturer is to prevent rust while it's sitting around awaiting a sale.

My Ruger 22/45 pistol really liked CCI Stingers when it was new. I think the hotter stuff definitely helps. It certainly won't hurt.

I cleaned/oiled mine. Then shot the living heck out of it with cheap Walmart bulk ammo. I am of the mindset for a 10/22, like a motor, break it in how your gonna run it.

Be careful announcing straw purchases to the public:eek:

I wish my friends would buy me guns:(
:flipoff2:

Just shoot the piss outta it! I did with my first one, and it still shoots true!

It's not a straw purchase if he fills out the paperwork.

IMHO – clean it thoroughly before shooting it for the first time. I don’t worry about breaking in, I just clean and shoot.
Read the manual, understand how to operate all the controls, be safe, and have fun.
The 10/22 is a nice little piece. You should have it forever.

I am going and filling out paper work with him at lunch.

It's a 10/22...

1. Go to Walmart and buy the cheapest bulk pack of ammo they have.
2. Shoot until the box is empty
3. Repeat step 1.

for sure clean and lube as directed by manufacturer. it is a 10/22, how is a "break in" going to help anything? the reward of a "break in" is still disputed in some circles of high power shooters, written off as unnecessary barrel wear.

i think the proper steps for a 10/22 are
1- obtain
2- clean and lube
3- enjoy
4- repeat 3

10/22s are great....I think I've put over 30K through mine....was the 1st firearm I purchased.

1. Buy a bolt buffer.
2. Clean thoroughly. Install bolt buffer.
3. Run brick of CCI Blazers or Fed 510 through. Bore snake every 100 rounds.
4. Clean thoroughly, two drops of favorite oil on bolt.
5. Go to Rimfire central. Get out credit card.

I think I read somewhere they don't recommend cleaning them until they start to jam.... works for me.

I know people say that, but how hard is it to clean a 10/22? Besides if the OP has one of the newer 10/22s he will have to deal with the paint chipping on the inside of the receiver in the first few hundred rounds anyway.

It's been said but:

Clean and lube
Shoot it a lot
Get a bolt buffer (easy install)
Get or make a bolt release (only slightly harder to install)
Get an extended mag release (easy change while doing the bolt release)

You may find you need a better quality extractor. Look on Rimfire.com for suggestions, but I think Power Custom and Volquartsen are still the top recommendations.

Messing with 10/22s is so easy even a caveman can do it (cliche' but yeah).
