I just got a new set of ALLOY USA u-joints to install on my stock spicer dana44 axles. Now the question is should I mill the flat section so I can use the full cicle clips, or just use the stock type c-clips? Is it better to loose some strength on the axles ears but gain better cup attatchment on the u-joint? Or should I just leave all alone and do it the traditional way with c-clips and red lock tite to hold them in. To bad alloy axles arnt in my buget than I wouldnt have this issue.
Any oppions would be helpfull.

No poll is complete without bacon, Is there a way you can wrap bacon around it to get the same effect? :foff:

I've tried it both ways. My problem has always been ripping the ears off the shaft. Which starts out as ovaling the holes. I have caught caps sliding on their way out from loosing the clip. I think machining them down will make the caps stay in longer but doesn't fix the problem caused by a joint stronger than the yoke. FWIW I've always used forged spicers and they seem to be stronger than the spicer axles.
This is only from my personal expierence and I have no controled test information to back it up.

I think I will mill out just enough for the clip.

Before i got my cromo front shafts i tack welded the caps to the ears. Thats the only way i have found to keep the caps from spinning and ovaling the holes.

Might want to save the Alloy joints for when you can afford some alloy shafts. Usually a stock spicer joint will outlive the stock shafts

I only vested 70 bucks for both u-joints, about the same for some spicer 760 or 297. plus I cant fund 7bills rite now. I ran these axles on 37"mtrs for 3 years with no brakage and stock u-joints.
Ill probaly brake first trip now that I cleaned all the crud off them...

7 bills? You shop at the wrong store
Just got my D30 4340 shafts and superjoints for under $500 here:
44 shafts with standard joints are even less

In any event, does the alloy joint have a warranty and if so do they require the use of full clips?

The bottom line is you're looking for strength, the snap-rings adds nothing. Plus it's going to be pretty tough getting snap-ring plyers in there. And I've heard no stories of anybody plunging to their death because of c-clip failure. Put your money someplace else.

Just grind it out enough to clear the snap ring at the bottom of the ear. A .045" slicer wheel will work nicely.
