: what have/would/will you change about your D90?
SkaerE 08-25-2002, 08:02 PM just wondering what you guys do to them? to make them a better "all around" 4x4/driver (im talking about mods that dont require it to become a trailer queen :))
and im not asking about changing tire sizes, mostly fab. work/changing axles out/fixing weak points etc...what are the 90's main "weak points"?
road1will 08-26-2002, 10:49 AM well i dont run a 90 but after hearing years of discussions and wheeling with them for a while, i can say that i think that the main weak point is the nut behind the wheel. so many of the guys who drive 90s think that they are the shit and dont know how to drive. they may have a built rig on 35s with lockers, but they let it get to their head.
but now if youre talking about mechanical weak points, i am going to have to say that the axles and front suspension setup are the weakEST points on the truck. that and the power steering box.
the rest of it is damn solid and well built, even the 3.9L.
RockRover 08-26-2002, 11:03 AM Well, IMO, you DONT'T have to do ANYTHING. Maaaaybe remove the sway-bars...That's about it for "all around 4x4/driver".
Fact is that Adams' 100% correct. Watch Matt Peterson run his 90. He can do amazing feat's in that thing and he's running near stock (san lockers and shocks)...With 33's I might add.
It's all in what your ultimate goal in ownership really is.

redrangie 08-26-2002, 11:21 AM Damn, two threads, and I am agreeing with RockRover again.
You ever heard of Rob Dassler? Been on/in a few covers/mags, can do amazing things with his 90. 33's, arb'ed and sits a little higher that's it.
The fact remains, as a "multi purpose vehicle" they are quite capable. It's the drivers that need the modifications. NOT the trucks....

I'm in total agreement on this one. Driver is key. A good driver in a nearly stock truck can make a bad driver in a trailer queen look stupid!
My biggest complaint about a nearly stock Defender is the rear hitch and ARB bumpers, if you run them. But then again I am a high-clearance kind of guy! My thoughts are....
Remove sway bars
Add 2" lift with Bilstein or OME shocks
run 285/75 BFG Mud-Terrains or Goodyear MT/R's
4.10's
ARB's front and rear
Maxi-drive rears
remove rear hitch (Cut it Off)
get high approach angle front bumper.
LEARN TO DRIVE!
With the above, you can go virtually anywhere.

He's got some 35's oner now, but your right he was amazing even with 33's.

m016324 08-26-2002, 09:53 PM but doug hasn't sold out with 42"s?
but they are totally right for a good wheeler take out the sway bars (at least the rear as it makes much less of an impact when removed) and maybe run a small lift and upsize the tires and that will get you through most places. Driving skills (which I am definately still working on) are very key to navigating these trucks through amazing obstacles. Best of luck

RoverOn 08-28-2002, 02:57 PM Here is the best upgrade I made to my D90.
I took it to the dealership last year and they returned it looking like this:

Somehow it now has A/C and it doesn't snow inside my truck in the winter...

(zipping up my flame suit!)
road1will 08-28-2002, 03:02 PM new body style range rovers kick ass, i cut my teeth off roading in those. throw a set of 245/75 mud terrains on there and they do damn well off road for what they are! traction control rocks!
redrangie 08-29-2002, 08:50 AM Did you cut anything else besides your teeth with those foil underpants?

Sounds painful! Trying not to think of consequences..... Must think happy thoughts. Must think Happy thoughts.
Serious One 08-29-2002, 11:10 AM Hmmmmm, how to make a D90 a better 'all around 4x4'?
Well....
Subtract 12.9 inches from wheelbase
Add 283 inches of Chevrolet displacement
Sprinkle liberally with creativity and elbow grease
Frost lightly with Bronze Green.
Let simmer for 2 years.
Serve warm.
