: Well fawk it.... Time to start building.
Nor Cal Wheelin 02-18-2009, 07:52 PM Base vehicle is a 1988 ford ranger extendo cab. Factory 2.9, mazda 5 speed, 1350 electric case, and garbage axles.
Going to run to 4wheel parts and grab the biggest lift kit I can tomorrow. I am thinking like 12" lift and like 35" tires.
Build will be basic....
Dana 44 front 5.13's detroit, ford 9" rear 5.13's welded, 37 irocs, 1350-54 doubler, 57" ford springs out back, radius arms and air shocks up front.
This build will be slow as fawk, because I am broke as fawk...:flipoff2::flipoff2:
I guess I am now committed, because I started bobbing the bed today. Maybe I will just rally a stocker with a bobbed bed though.:homer:
And for the peanut gallery, I am building my truck my way. So suck it. :flipoff2: I know what I should do, My wallet knows what I will do.:(
FbOmRxD 02-18-2009, 07:57 PM the tech this thread brings is overwhelming :flipoff2:
Nor Cal Wheelin 02-18-2009, 08:01 PM Its going to be a pretty boring build actually.....:flipoff2:
Some one might like it, and if not... I will delete it.
drop the 9" plan and just go 8 lug from the start
a d70 from 83-85
and for the cheapness we will let you run an 8 lug d44 for a little while
this will save you having to whine about the d60f being 8 lug and you having spiffy rims that are 5 lug like all the Heepers do
travisford83 02-18-2009, 08:14 PM I'm just shocked that you are finally building something! Best of luck Jeremy! Let me know if you want a hand.......Im too broke to rebuild my rig yet again and have the itch to work on someone else's rig.
TroyM 02-18-2009, 08:42 PM this build sucks already..... no pictures ? no shitheaps? no rusty parts?
desteurm 02-18-2009, 08:46 PM I have some really weak gm dana 44 flattops. I'm not using them because I found some f150 flattops. They take gm brakes that's why I'm not running them. Both knuckles are drilled and tapped too. That would help with your draglink angle.
Also, I'm considering making some steering arms for my bronco. I would rather make a few sets to keep cost per unit down.
Are you going to use 9" coils or leaf springs?

Not dovetailing at this time.

Nor Cal Wheelin 02-19-2009, 08:03 PM I tore into it.....
Got some more done on the bed today. Still need some parts though. SLOW BUILD.:flipoff2::flipoff2::flipoff2:
I will post the pics later tonight...
FAWK, I almost forgot. SCORED THE ULTIMATE FREEBIE TODAY....

Nor Cal Wheelin 02-20-2009, 07:55 PM Ok, I will use a 60 and a 10.25....
Hey Mike... I know the 2.9 is a dog, but I like mine and it runs good. Being you run one as well, this question is for you.
Are 5.13's enough to run 40" tires with the 2.9?? I still need it to go down the road too though.
svt150j49 02-20-2009, 09:01 PM id go with 5.38s. Your already in there spending the money, get all you can out of it. i had my 5.13s and 40s with my 4.9L and it did well, but i always wanted more. Im doing 5.38s 40s and a 351 this time. :grinpimp: use the 5.38s
WHITE RHINO 02-21-2009, 12:53 AM mine drove down the road perfect with 5.13s and 38s. and lots of power in reserve
twistedranger 02-21-2009, 01:30 AM i though you were posting pics of the sic side exhaust forget sectioning the bed. At least your working on it it will be done before I get my 60 fixed.
twistedranger 02-21-2009, 01:31 AM I have 5.38 with 39.5s and it works perfect with the 2.9.
bigDREW 02-21-2009, 01:33 AM i have 5.38's 38.5's and a 2.9 works great but would love to have a 4.0
Nor Cal Wheelin 02-21-2009, 09:00 AM Cool guys... 5.38's it is.
Anyone running into pinion probs with that small of a pinion?? Going to order gears today or tomorrow, need to get my axles pulled and ready for gears.
Goint to tear into the 1 tons today, to get my rear spring brackets and shackles.
I will get some pics posted soon.
King7765 02-21-2009, 02:52 PM I don't think I like your attitude! :flipoff2:
HUMMER rims? So what! :flipoff2:
twistedranger 02-24-2009, 07:34 PM the shaft size dose not change with the gear ratio. It still uses the same size pinion yoke nut (1. 5/16 ) and the bearing size is sill also the same. So really you will be fine running the 5.38s.
Nor Cal Wheelin 02-24-2009, 08:11 PM Its cool, I wasnt worried about the pinion shaft. The ONLY pinions I have broken, broke in the actual gear teeth (( pinion head ))...
Broke a chrysler 9.25 with 4.56's, welded and 37" tires.
Broke a Toyota 8" with 5.29's and 38" tires.
Both of them broke in the same place more or less.
Anyways, got a little bit done today...
No pics yet. But soon.
dam it happened again
I know there are updates to this thread but I cant get passed the asian dancing girl to see them :(

Nor Cal Wheelin 02-26-2009, 10:06 PM Well, I have been busy as fawk... Trying to build and get my mess cleaned up and sell parts.
So, the tech in this build is OLD SCHOOL for now... It will get better once I get to the front end.
I have the shackle mounts plated and ready to go, I am debating plating the shackles as well...??
Front spring hangers still need to be plated.
Springs need to be taken apart and re worked.
Need to make shock mounts and a rear drive line still.
Need to finish welding the bed up.
Need to make a rear cross member and cut the end of the frame off.
I need to buy some fawking cutting torches... This sawzall and cut off wheel shit SUCKS...

You can use nickel rod to weld cast and not have to preheat like you do when using mig or tig. Just cuz its an old welding style doesnt mean its inferior. :flipoff2:
Looks good Jeremy. Im still not sure which of us will finish first...:D
Nor Cal Wheelin 02-27-2009, 10:20 AM Keith,
I used a nickle rod with my (old as dirt) sears 220... I worked ok, but I am not sure I am happy with it. That fawking rod is EXPENSIVE too. I am thinking about cutting it out and doing the whole preheat deal with a buddys big ass miller portable.
Thanks Sam,
I know you little shit... You are making some progress.:grinpimp: I decided to build this one when I saw you were building yours. I need to go wheeling again.

Nor Cal Wheelin 02-27-2009, 10:29 AM I didnt even get a picture of it finished...:homer:

Nor Cal Wheelin 02-27-2009, 03:36 PM I am going with a ball joint 60 front and 10.25 out back.

It looks stupidly tall right now, but with 40's and all the crap like bumpers and tools, it should squat down a bit...
Guess we'll see.
WHITE RHINO 02-27-2009, 11:41 PM i think it looks good so far but id do longer shackle at roughly a 45 degree angle loaded. i started on a dovetail bed. i hate bobbing beds i remembered i took 16"s out of the front of the bed and have to take 4 out of the back
Nor Cal Wheelin 02-28-2009, 12:50 PM Mike, it should squat a little bit once its on its own weight. The springs are floating in that picture. Once its on its own weight again, I can play with the shackles as needed. Right now it should be right around 50 deg though. I left them like that planning on adding bumpers and trail gear. Once its done it will be right around 45 deg.

Bed looks sweet. And i say run those tires, you'll never have to worry about breaking an axle :D
CHOPPEDBII 03-01-2009, 06:33 AM very cool, so whats the plan for the front clip?
what wheel base are you going for?
Nor Cal Wheelin 03-01-2009, 09:37 AM I am absolutely not running those tires Sam... It looks retarded with the tiny tires on it.:flipoff2: I am going to run a 39.5 or 40" tires.
Front clip will get trimmed for tire stuff... I am thinking about trying to do a fancy tube fender, while still keeping the factory body lines... We'll see though.
Right now its stock, something like 120"... I think. I am considering moving the rear axle forward 10" and moving the front axle forward 3". That would put me at 113", that is a lot more favorable to me... 113" wb and 40" tires would be a fairly wheel-able combination with the full size axles.
If I hate it like that, I could go up to a 42" tire...??
We will see what happens.
Fordman500 03-01-2009, 04:05 PM Hows that welder work? Is that one of those giant tech deals? I got his plasma and its tits. Based on your pictures it looks really good, I just bought a 100$ stickwelder when I started building my truck, probly the best most used tool for the price I have bought.

of course, just giving you shit :flipoff2: The sterling would be a giant anchor for you on those meats hahaha

Nor Cal Wheelin 03-02-2009, 08:44 AM I am open to input - opinions on the design of the links, but dont debate why I should use a 4 link.
If I wanted to use a 4 link or triangulted 3 link, I would be planning it that way.
fairlane_68 03-02-2009, 09:06 AM How are you going to make the lower part?
Nor Cal Wheelin 03-02-2009, 09:39 AM The lower part of the link will be made out of 2.5" x .500 wall dom. It will be gusseted or boxed in with 3/16" plate.
The shorter upper arms that connect the truss, will be made out of 1.5" x .250 wall dom.
I only want to build these once, so this should be plenty strong. They will be heavy fawkers, but it will go a long way to my piece of mind.

OK...well how about bringing that upper link out some more, about to the middle of the lower link? THat will give you a upper link that's closer to perpendicular, and you could put the bend at the lower link at the same spot that the upper anchors to it, allowing the lower to have less of a bend. Make sense?
BigDusty 03-02-2009, 10:04 AM Wow jeremy that radius arm setup is REALLY similar to what im planning.
maybe make the lower part of the arm with no bends? Just would be easier/quicker to make i think.
What are you doing for joints?

I get what your saying. The reason I did it this way, I am using a 92 dana 60. I dont have much room between the center section and inner c to mount stuff. The lower link will mount so far out board, that they will become my steering stops if I dont bend the way I did. I will be running a 40" tire, and they just wont turn if I dont use this design.

I thought about that Sam, it would be easier to do... But, the tires wont turn.
I am using poly bushings at the axle end, a heim at the link end of the shorter arm and I am thinking about using Ballistic joints at the frame.
BigDusty 03-02-2009, 11:47 AM I thought about that Sam, it would be easier to do... But, the tires wont turn.

Nor Cal Wheelin 03-02-2009, 12:49 PM How the fawk did I miss that?? That is almost EXACTLY what I was thinking.
I was thinking about doing the upper arms on both sides though. It will be a driver as well as wheeler, I need to stay away from brake dive if I can.
I like those arms though, damn, bringin the beef.:smokin:
What is your overall arm length from axle to frame??
I am thinking in the neighborhood of 46" for my arms...

Nor Cal Wheelin 03-02-2009, 03:20 PM Oh lovely.... I will look right now. :flipoff2:
Ok, stole some stuff from f250 for my links.
Pretty set with this design, I have measured the truck and it should work really well.
Updated side pic. Top view will be similar to the one posted earlier.

Bajabomber87 03-02-2009, 03:39 PM Ha she just bitched me out for being disrespectful  I didnt even say anything bad.
Nor Cal Wheelin 03-02-2009, 03:43 PM I left it alone... lmao
I totally dont get the Hummer thing...?? Why wheel something that needs the paint shielded??? They sure are proud of those fawking things though.:shaking:
Oh well.
Bajabomber87 03-02-2009, 04:35 PM I could care less what the fuck they wheel or how they protect it, I just thought it was funny but apparently the hummer forum is the same as the newbie gen. 4x4 where if you have nothing positive then your band :shaking: Ive never seen that in any of the other brand specific forums rules at the top of the page.
4XFORD 03-02-2009, 07:02 PM from my truggy build, i may add an upper arm on the passenger side as well. in the pics the upper rear is not mounted yet
A DART??? You used a fawkin broken DART for a plumb bob????
Way to go, should work pretty good. :flipoff2:
.
.
.
f250rollinon37s 03-02-2009, 08:06 PM ya a dart - :flipoff2:
and i flexed it without springs and it would max out the TRE before it would bind ( and hit the shop floor ) i was going to add a upper on the pass side as well if the brake dive was exessive, or if i had a little axle hop on the pass side - i left room to do so
my lowers are near 48" and the upper is 28"
i might change the track arm if i ever add coilovers in the front though
and nor cal hurry up :flipoff2:
Wes Mhantooth 03-03-2009, 04:11 AM i dig this radius arm design a lot. how do you fig out the anti dive on a radius arm though?
and correct me if im wrong, but did you said you might try to run one side with an upper?
Nor Cal Wheelin 03-03-2009, 08:05 AM It will have brake dive being a radius arm design, coupled with the fact I am using 2.5 air shocks or possibly ori struts on the front.
I am running the upper arms on both sides. They are long enough that I shouldnt need a wristed style set up. We will see though.
The only down side to these arms will be the weight. They are going to be fawking heavy. I am almost positive I wont be able to bend them though.
Once the wife clears me to buy the air shocks, I will start building them.
I should have the back buttoned up in the next day or two. Then on to the front axle and doubler.
Wes Mhantooth 03-03-2009, 05:39 PM hell the weight wont be an issue. its low weight.
just wondering.. what made you go radius arms? will this see the street at all?
Nor Cal Wheelin 03-03-2009, 06:58 PM It will see the street every day, thats why I went this way instead of 4 link. I need the mechanical steering to be legal. If it was a dedicated wheeler, then I would go triangulated 3-4 link with full hydro.
I dont have the money or want to pull another tow rig payment... So this will be driven to and from the trails as well.
I am not overly worried about the radius arms, they are similar to the long arm systems for the Heeps. Its a proven design.
I am more worried about front spring/shock selection. I am thinking about running the ORI dp3 struts... Will probably end up using 2.5 air shocks with a sway bar though.

Oh yeah darts work good as a plumb bob...:D

svt150j49 03-03-2009, 07:41 PM is that upper link single sheared off the lower :homer:
i think he was going to make sure it all worked well before he did the double shear. Like drive the truck around the yard to make sure nothing binds.
WHITE RHINO 03-03-2009, 07:53 PM and theres no panhard maybe in the build stage i donno i would do a true three link
Bajabomber87 03-03-2009, 07:58 PM It will see the street every day, thats why I went this way instead of 4 link. I need the mechanical steering to be legal. If it was a dedicated wheeler, then I would go triangulated 3-4 link with full hydro.
its legal jackass! :flipoff2: havent you read my thread?
WHITE RHINO 03-03-2009, 08:04 PM full hydro sucks on the road...
Bajabomber87 03-03-2009, 08:10 PM so does driving an offroad truck on road
Nor Cal Wheelin 03-03-2009, 08:22 PM LMAO, I never said I would enjoy driving it on the road... Just said I would be able too. :flipoff2:
One of the guys I wheel with is running full hydro and he street drives the fawk out of his rig. I just dont want to mess with it.
This is a compromise that just meets in the middle.
I will be able to wheel it with out to many problems, and I will be able to street it when needed.

Mine isn't toooooo bad with 3* of castor. Of course I havn't gone over 45 yet.
Nor Cal Wheelin 03-04-2009, 06:10 PM A few of the Dezzert guys are running full hydro at 105 plus... Granted they are running return to center systems and 5-7* positive caster...
It must be nice to have $$backing like that.:homer:
IROK Cherokee 03-04-2009, 06:18 PM Yeah my valve is open center load reactive and does return to center.
Nor Cal Wheelin 03-04-2009, 09:13 PM You should be fine than... Positive 3 castor isnt bad at all, with mechanical steering. I wouldnt go any less, but the older dodge dana 60's were set to 2-3* positive from the factory. It should be fairly similar with a full hydro system, especially with a return to center orbital.
What valve are you running?? PSC or Howe? I was looking for a salvage source for orbital valves like that. Wasnt much available, to say the least.

Not to get too personal here but is your buddy a suspect or are there charges against him? Problem in it being 10 years ago is its hard to remember or find proof of what you were doing when it happened and why it couldnt have been you.
And for some reason i thought you already married your lady :homer:
Be weary of the weed though. Truck update, still working on the half doors. I will have my link / air shock money on the 15 of april. I am going to do what I can for now. I need to install the new exhaust... Nor Cal Wheelin 03-30-2009, 09:08 PM Yeah I like how the doors are turning out. I relocated the inner door latch to work, and relocated the factory speaker. I was thinking about stealing mikes idea for cup holders, but oh well. I may add them at a later date.

Nor Cal Wheelin 04-11-2009, 10:42 AM well, did some more drawing...
I have been trying to get an idea, of what I want this truck to do. I have decided that I am not dealing with the whole tow rig situation anymore. So this will be my be all, do all truck... It will get street driven to and from wheeling locations and wheeled. I need to build it solid enough to do this. These are some pictures of where I think I am going.
Let me know what you all think, pros and cons to this design, what you would do differently.
This is my first drawing. I dont like the way it looks... I think it would just be to fawking heavy.

I added some color for a better persective. Under the sliders will be plated of course. I couldn't draw that and make it look right.

check out svts truck - with new pics :flipoff2:
4XFORD 04-11-2009, 08:36 PM That's pretty sharp for paint, mine look like a five year olds etch-a-sketch scribble. Too much time at the keyboard and not enough in the shop or does that lack of depth perception help at paint? :flipoff2:
First drawing is definetly too busy, last one looks great, should be strong with all the 45*s, (trianglation in pbbese).
Bajabomber87 04-11-2009, 09:31 PM 2nd looks :smokin:
