Hi all,

A certain guru is about to make up a roll cage for my d90, SW. There is no cage on it at all at the moment.

We are thinking about going outside the body completely, and going down and fitting the bottom of the cage to some “wider” rock sliders in front of and behind the doors, and down to some “extended rear cross member things” at the very back. The Idea is that it will provide more protection for the vehicle body, it’s no wider than the wheels anyway.

We will taper in from the top of the front wing level, leaving 1/4" clearance all round.

Has anyone else done anything like this? Any Pictures?

All comments welcome, preferably before this happens!

Merv,

Sounds sweet.

But, are you sure 1/4 inch clearance will be enough? I have seen sliders that were 'unmovable' deflect up to 1/2 inch before returning to their original position. I'm sure the forces on a cage are more than some sliders.

Is the goal with the cage to provide complete body protection, i.e. if the truck goes over no panels will be dinged?

Or, is the goal just to keep the panels somewhat straight and the vehicle still drivable in the case of a roll?

One thing to consider is a front roll hoop for the radiator. Dunno where it would tie into, but I have seen these becoming more and more popular on Jeeps. If you had an ARB bumper you will get the idea, and that's essentially what it would have to look like on a D90, but on a Jeep there is even less sheet metal than on a Rover. They really need the front hoop whereas we might not (as much).

just some incomplete random thoughts to get you thinking...but I think that'ss what you wanted right?

I have been considering some type of Roll Cage for my Rangie as well. From what I understand exo-cages usually don't fare so well in the event of a roll. This is second hand as I have yet to see this personally. Personally I'll take the body damage and unless the truck rolls several times the truck will most likely still be drivable. My main concern is my own safety, I can always rebuild the truck.

Also more and more Jeeps are using the hoops on the front to protect the radiator, I do not know for sure if Land Rovers would require this. Probably not a bad idea for a Hard-Core Rockcrawler who eventually expects to roll.

Mike, Just the sort of stuff I'm looking for.

I've already got a serious bull bar affair on the front bumper that isn't going anywhere (Ivor build).

And I'm not hoping for "perfect" panels after a spill, but I am looking to survive and have the truck good enough to drive me home without getting arrested for driving a health hazzard <grin>

Fair point on leaving over 1/4". Damien's cage on his D90 has just under 1/4" and sometimes he hears a vibration where they rub when on the highway, but never enough yet to remove the paint.

There might be bolt on bars from the cage to the bull bar to protect the wings, but I doubt it.
